ance with "An Act to encourage and promote the establish-
ment of free libraries in cities, villages and towns of this

Chicago, January i, 1903.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES.

CHICAGO, January i, 1903.

In pursuance of the provision of "An Act to encourage and
promote the establishment of free public libraries in cities,
villages, and towns of this State" (Illinois), the Trustees of
The Newberry Library present this their eleventh annual
report.

The Trustees have been called upon to mourn, during the
past year, the loss by death of their honored associate, Edward
Swift Isham, Esq., which occurred in New York on February
i6th, 1902. From the death of Mr. Newberry until the or-
ganization of the Library, Mr. Isham, in connection with his
partner, Robert T. Lincoln, was the Attorney of the Executors
and Trustees of Mr. Newberry's Estate, and since the Library
was organized, has held the office of First Vice-President.

A copy of the memorial tribute of Mr. Isham's associate
Trustees, presented and placed upon their records, will be
found herewith, marked Exhibit I.

The vacancy occasioned by the death of Mr. Isham was filled
by the election of Mr. David B. Jones.

The names of the present Trustees of the Library are given
in Exhibit II.

In the annual report of the Librarian, appended hereto, and
marked Exhibits II to VI, inclusive, general statistics of the

ance, the accessions by gift and purchase, with statement of
the more prominent gifts, the number of current periodicals

Library, with full list of donors and their respective gifts. In

EXHIBIT I.

MEMORIAL TO EDWARD SWIFT ISHAM, ESQ.

January I, 1903.

The Trustees of The Newberry Library, in loving remem-
brance, place upon its records their appreciation of the eminent
ability and loyalty to its interests of their late co-worker,
Edward Swift Isham, and with this their realization not alone
of their loss of a wise and judicious counsellor, but of the loss
sustained by the city of Chicago in the passing away of a
citizen so greatly honored and esteemed.

From the organization of the Library he had borne his full
part in its development and growing usefulness.

He was a great lawyer. For many years he had stood in
the foremost ranks in the profession he had chosen, a profes-
sion he loved and honored. He was a man of exalted char-
acter, of great erudition, of rare attainments in many lines,
and of a learning at once wide and exact.

He passed away in the very prime of his manhood, in the
fulness of his splendid intellectual powers.

He was widely learned, yet tolerant of the views of those
differing from him, and his relations with his co-trustees were
most kindly and of unbroken harmony. By his associates he
is profoundly mourned.

The Librarian has the honor to submit to the Board of
Trustees of the Newberry Library his report for the year
1902.

The number of visitors is 64 less than it was in 1901. The
attendance would have been larger but for the moving of sev-
eral departments and the consequent derangement of a portion
of the Library for a period of ninety days. There has been a
decided advance in the number o>f books consulted.

The accessions, by gift and purchase, for the year last past,
exclusive of duplicates, number 7,003 volumes and 1,947
pamphlets.

We begin the year with 191,501 volumes and 69,272 pam-
phlets, maps, manuscripts, etc. ; a total of 260,773.

The number of current periodicals on file is 1,327, viz.:

American Indian, I ; Norwegian, 3 ; Portuguese, i ; Russian,
3 ; Spanish, 6 ; Swedish, 1 1 ; Swiss, 6.

following: Hon. George E. Adams, Chicago, 119 volumes

of the United States; Pennsylvania State Library, Harris-
burg, 60 volumes, consisting of Pennsylvania state reports
and of the Pennsylvania archives, printed under direction of
Hon. Frank Reeder, Secretary of the Commonwealth, and
edited by Dr. Wm. H. Egle; Mrs. E. S. Porter, Chicago*, 91
volumes, Philosophical and Ecclesiastical works; Mrs. N.
Senn, Chicago, 10 folio volumes of S. W. Bushnell's "Oriental
ceramic art, illustrated by examples from the collection of
W. T. Walters ;" Dr. N. Senn, Chicago, 40 volumes, 6 pam-
phlets, 2 manuscripts of Medical society publications and
Reports.

A notable feature of the year's work is the re-arrangement
and consolidation of several of the departments. The changes
made involved the transportation o>f 74,000 volumes from one
floor to another, and the uniting of four rooms formerly
separated by partition walls. The present location of the
departments is given in Exhibit V.

The recent effort to dispose of our large accumulation of
duplicates gives promise oi a successful issue.

The work of the various departments has been already
reported by the Committee on Administration.

Respectfully,

J. V. CHENEY,

Librarian.

HENRY J. WILLING.

The Trustees of The Newberry Library, in loving remem-
brance place upon its records their recognition of the constant
loyalty to its interests of their late associate, Henry J. Willing.
They record also their regret at the loss of a judicious adviser
and their appreciation of the loss to the city of Chicago, in the
passing away of an esteemed and honored citizen.

. Mr. Willing had been a member of the Board of Trustees
from the organization of the corporation. His judgment as to
the financial affairs of the Library was of great value. His views
were always conservative and firmly held and were the result
of long experience in the activities of a successful mercantile
life.

After his retirement from active business he gave for the
remaining twenty years of his life much o,f his time and effort
to charitable and municipal affairs. In him private charities and
public services were nobly united. His ideals were high and
his devotion to them unswerving.

He was a lover and appreciative reader of the best literature,
and his well-filled library, collected through many decades, by
himself and his accomplished wife, was of the best.

He was by nature deeply imbued with the religious senti-
ment, and his work in the church which he loved was, while
modestly rendered, of rare efficiency. To him was given length
of days well spent, and an honorable and exemplary career a
beautiful and well nigh blameless life.
