PREFACE. 



THIS Supplement contains the names of the animals received 
by the Zoological Society of London during the past three 
years which belong to species not included in the ' RC\!M (! 
List' published in 1872. It also gives the date of arrival and 
the mode of acquisition of each individual of such sp 
The additional specimens of species already inserted in the 
former list are not catalogued. 

The subjoined is an approximate account of the number of 
species belonging to the five classes of Vertebrated Animals 
exhibited in the Society's Gardens since 1860 that is, during 
the past 14 years :

PKEFACE. 



THE present Supplement contains the names of the Verte- 
brated Animals received by the Society in 1879, arranged 
according to the last edition of the List of Animals (1879), 
together with the date of the arrival and mode of acquisition 
of each specimen. 

The numbers are the same as those attached to each 
species in the List. 

The additional species are indicated by an asterisk, and 
their places in the series indicated by the number followed 
by a letter (8a &c.) . 

The total number of additions to the Society's Menagerie 
in 1879 was 1268, belonging to 491 species. Of these
