A  year  in  retrospect.  Fall  begins  a  new  school  year  with  new  faces;
autumn leaves of red, gold, and brown turn the campus into a riot of color.
Days pass quickly and soon a blanket of snow transforms our campus into
a winter wonderland. As spring makes its late debut, we realize that our
year is almost completed. Then it's graduation, a final good-bye, and only
moments to remember. In pictorial review we present this year at Appala-
chian State Teachers 0^01^^—1960— truly a wonderful vear.

Bob Breitenstein
liend Coach

With the coming of autumn came another fine season
of football at Appalachian. Spectators saw little differ-
ence in the opening games, but manv missed the familiar
figure of the late Bob Broome pacing the sidelines.

The spirit of fair play and sportsmanship, for which
Coach Bnxjme stood. li\cd in the minds of App coaches
and players. Coach Bob Breitenstein. former part-time
assistant to Coach Broome, became head coach this year.
With Coach Breitenstein's experience on the gridiron,
the Fighting Mountaineers had a \ery successful season.

Cal Burleson, an end from Barium Springs, has been
co-captain for two of his three years on the team. An
academic scholarship student, he has been elected to the
All-Conference team for the past two years.

Jack White, co-captain for two years, is a guard. The
Lexington native has played for four seasons and made
the All-Conference team two years. Last fall he was
awarded the Boh Broome Memorial Scholarship.

.All the sweat, blood, and tears that went so far
toward making football the autumn King of the
Campus pushed the 1959 squad into second place in
the North State Conference. They boast an over-
all record of six wans against four losses.

Freezing weather on game nights, faithful spec-
tators, energetic cheerleaders, and a spirited band
reflect this season's events. The hours spent in
skull practice and skrimmages in the mud re-
flected the Mountaineers' determination to win.

The Religious Council is composed of the presidents and two other members from each of the
church affiliated groups, the YAICA. and the YWCA. The function of the council is to bring closer
harmony among all religious organizations on campus.

Sp>onsoring an annual Religious Emphasis Week, this group invites widely-known speakers to the
campus. "The Christian Collegian" was the theme for this annual event.

CWoup of Reliii'ious Council iiionhers chat with Dr. joucs.

We are all collegians. The question the Religious
Council asked was "Are We Christian Collegians?"
This week we attempted to find out what a Chris-
tian Collegian is; what he stands for; what his beliefs
are concerning cheating, love, courtship, marriage,
and  other  problems  facing  the  college  student  today;
and how he "rates" on campus.

Dr. Charles Jones of Chapel Hill was the main
speaker. Helping to make this annual e\'ent a suc-
cess were the Appalachian College Choir, the Girls'
Chorus, the Modern Dance Club, the College
Chorale, and the plavcrafters of Western Carolina
who presented the play, Everyman.

The Mountaineers boasted a season record
of sixteen wins against six losses. Catawba was
the only team we did not defeat. The Apps
lost in the Spindale Tournament to Lenoir
Rhyne. In the North State Tourney, the
Mountaineers advanced to the semi-fin.ils but
were defeated by Catawba.

The 1959-60 basketball season at Appala-
chian was a successful one due to the team and
their Coaches and the good spirit displayed by
the students.

The wrestling squad kept up its winning tradition this
year under its new coach, Mr. Joe Edmisten. The Appa-
lachian team finished seventh in the N.A.I. A. and was
rated the top team in the South. This is indeed a record
to be proud of.

The 1959 baseball season at Appalachian was
handicapped, as usual, by bad weather. The team
was composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores
with little experience. Although the team won
only three games, they showed great determination.
If the breaks had gone their way, the season would
have been much more successful.
