Hal! of Fame

Chosen by vote of the faculty and staff, the five sophomores
of the 1972-1973 Hall of Fame are recipients of the highest
honor students can attain at Northwest.

Emphasis on the selection of the 1972-1973 Hall of Fame is

participation in campus and community activities, qualities of
leadership and integrity, and contribution to the ideals and
objectives of the college. Each has had a consistent grade point
average of above 3.5 of a possible 4 points, qualifying him for
the President's List of Scholars for three semesters.

"Rally 'Round" — Homecoming 1972

Homecoming 1 972 was different ... a bleak day, October 28, but actually plenty of warmth for spectators and participants. After
a rousing rally downtown by the Band, the Northwest Misses, and the cheerleaders, Queen Charlene was crowned and her court
introduced in traditional ceremony in front of McLendon Center. The Queen, with her court, reigned over the "political rally" in the
Center ballroom, where skits depicted the decades 1920's through the '70's. The midway on the patio swarmed with alumni, guests,
students and staff for games of skill and fun, while more physical feats such as sack races were performed outside.

The traditional alumni banquet, football game with the introduction of the court at halftime, and SGA dance climaxed the annual
event of "Rallying 'Round."

44

The court with their escorts include (oppo-
site page, I. to r.) Bill May, Julie Manning,
Johnny Tyus, Ginger Allen, Billy Person,
Queen Charlene White, Dwight Lancaster,
Jamie Agostinelli, Randy Turner, and Cindy
Rials. SGA president, Carla Ferguson (left)
crowns Queen Charlene. Charlene, chosen
State All-Star Queen, was crowned at half-
time of the Mississippi Junior College All-
Star football game at Tupelo.

Fine Arts Productions

Theatre and music productions on campus were severely curtailed from Novem-
ber to April because of the extensive renovation of the Auditorium in progress.
Performances by A Dozen plus Three, song and dance group, were for the most
part off-campus and members did spend many hours on the bus to and from con-
certs in the area. The Singers Candlelight Concert was held in the Senatobia High
School. The production of the drama "A Man Called Peter" (pictured on the oppo-
site page) was presented in October before the Auditorium was dismantled. The
annual all-campus musical was postponed until late spring.

chairman of the Art Department.
Other exhibitions included the
sophomore students display, one
by the Hinds Junior College fac-
ulty, and paintings and drawings
by Lois Corinth.

Involved
People

The variety of activities and events in
1972-1973 inspired people to become
involved in those of greatest interest to
each. Christmas, of course, held the interest
of just about everybody at the college. Phi
Theta Kappa members were busy hosting
the State Convention of the fraternity (bot-
tom) in the Fall. The first Northwest-spon-
sored rodeo (left) sponsored by the FFA,
drew a crowd from not only the college but
also from over the Tri-States. The State Con-
ference of the Mississippi Junior College
Press Association, the Drug Conference, and
the Spring Arts Festival were among other
events for involvement.

Outmanned but undaunted Rangers end 3-7

The year 1 972 saw hard times come upon the Northwest
Rangers. It was a year that saw the Rangers play good football
both offensively and defensively. They played well, yet they lost.
With a 3-7 record it's hard to explain how you consider having
a good year. Yet with all the hardships and heartaches North-
west was never awed by their opponent. The Rangers were very
much in every game they played. They never gave up.

It all started back in September when the Rangers dropped
their opening game to the Jones Babcats (Jones later became the
South Division champions). It ended in November with another
loss, this one to Pearl River Junior College (Pearl River was
nationally ranked among the top ten junior college teams).

The team's spirit was never daunted as they gave their best in
every instance. Likewise, the students never gave up their sup-
port for the Rangers. The stadium was filled, mainly with stu-
dents, every home game.

The Rangers, outmanned and outweighed in almost every con-
test, were really never blown off the field in any of their games.
They lost several heart-breakers: to Hinds 23-19, to Northeast
16-7, and to Delta, (the Mississippi Junior College Champions),

13-0.

It was not the best season for the Rangers, but they got a lot
accomplished. The team was short on experience so freshmen
had to be used. It hurt this season, but those same inexperienced
freshmen will be back next year as experienced sophomores.

And another aspect that seems to be overlooked in today's
competitive spirit, how to be a good sport. The 1 972 Ranger
football team showed their followers a prime example of sports-
manship. They were good winners and they knew how to lose
gracefully. Don't think for a moment that the Rangers were satis-
fied with defeat, but they played a fair game, gave it the best
that they had, and after all, that's all you can really ask of any-
one.

So the 1 972 Northwest Rangers played the best that they
could and in doing so they got some satisfaction out of this past
season. They got invaluable experience for a large part of next
year's squad and they showed a stubbornness toward losing that
is a credit to the entire squad and coaches. The Rangers will be
back in 1973.

Rangers win 29 in a row in conference

The Rangers finished the second consecutive season with a perfect conference record 1 2-0, making it 29 conference wins in a row
. . . no losses since 1970.

The basketball team started the season off with a bang, winning their first two contests by a total of three points. The "team that
wasn't" arrived early.

Northwest, pre-season pick to finish somewhere in the middle of the conference standings, started out good, matured fast and ended
the regular season in strong fashion. With only one returning starter and two players that had seen limited action the year before, first-
year head coach Noal Akins, molded a group of spirited players into a super basketball unit.

Mike Boone, the lone returning starter from last year's championship squad, came back in proper style. Boone, the top defensive man
on the 1 972-73 squad, gave the young club the leadership Northwest needed in the first part of the season.

Howard Taylor and Roosevelt Lee also came on strong for Akins. Both Taylor and Lee saw limited action last season, but they
matured rapidly; matured enough, in fact, to be named to the All-State team at the close of the regular season. Taylor who led all
Mississippi Junior College scorers with just over a 28-point average picked up 31 points in the Rangers' first contest and kept up that
pace until late in the season when the opposition started double-teaming the scoring ace.

Lee gave Northwest the much-needed muscle under the boards. Along with a good rebounding average, Lee managed to end the
season with a double-figure scoring average.

Lee Payton moved into the center position, vacated by the loss of Eddie Thomas due to Thomas' transfer to a senior college. Payton
added the one thing that the Rangers lacked — height. Even though Payton was shorter than most of the opposing post men, he
managed to average 1 2 rebounds per game and lead the Rangers in the department.

Northwest was blessed by a multitude of good guards. Coach Akins started three different guards at one position during the course
of the season. Scott Gabbert started the season at one guard spot. Later Akins rotated Gabbert and Albert Beard. Finally, Akins
decided on John Lomax. Lomax was ineligible for the first semester but came on strong for the Rangers. He led the Ranger scorers in
one contest when he poured in 24 points against Mississippi Delta, the final conference game for the Rangers.

All the members of the Ranger squad saw action this season. Gary Oakley, Jack Hurdle, Kenny Pratt, and Eddie Stevison added to
the Rangers' varied attack. Tommy Rodgers and Alfred Dockery gave Northwest some help in the rebounding category.

All in all, it was a fine season for the Rangers. The team played inspired ball. They gave each contest their best.

game 6-0 and dropped the Rangers to a 1 2-3 season.

'72 Ranger Track

Northwest tallied 26 points to finish fourth
place in the championship state track meet at
Moss Point. The young team which had only one
sophomore took one first place, two second place
spots, three fourth place awards, and one fifth
place spot at the meet.

The Rangers were outrun by first place Co-Lin
with 59 points and Gulf Coast and Holmes who
tied for second with 37 points each.

Reese D. McLendon,
President

and Mrs. McLendon

Completing his twentieth year as president of Northwest Mis-
sissippi Junior College in June 1973, Reese D. McLendon has
had a major share in the progress of the college from the small-
est in the State to one of the four largest. His ability to project
and to foresee the needs of the District and to inspire others in
fulfilling those needs has made him a foremost administrator in
higher education. Working with him as first lady and as director

Into Tomorrow

238

The multitude of faces at Northwest compose a unique "festival of people." We are different in many aspects
yet share a common interest — hopes for a better future. People are the world. Students are Northwest. Without
people there is nothing! With people life becomes a festival — of classes, of sports, of organizations, and of
activities.

As the changes in the world occur, Northwest continues to expand. The plans for the coliseum and the chang-
ing of the women's rules indicate that Northwest is not only growing within its boundaries but is striving to keep
in pace with society. With the war behind us and peace at hand, we can now turn our attention to building a
better future, and this can only be accomplished through education.

Each student at Northwest is an individual seeking his own identity. We hope the 1 973 ROCKETEER has
captured a spectrum of these identities.

Sincerely,

/

I
