The steady growth of NWJC
since 1958, when R. D. McLendon
became president, has shown him
to be a leader in the junior college
movement. Last September, when
he made announcement of his
retirement, to be effective in July of
this year, he said, "Mrs. McLendon
and I will leave a lot of memories.
I've seen Northwest grow and pros-
per in the last 21 years, and I must
say I am proud." The McLendon
contributions will remain indelibly
with the college: the beauty of the
NWJC landscape — maintained
under Mrs. McLendon's direction
— the physical plant which has
grown to multi-million-dollar
dimensions, and the increase in
staff, faculty, and student body.

R. D. McLendon

Homecoming 1973

Queen Janet reigned, the student body cheered and the Rangers ruled the
football field on October 20th — Homecoming Day, 1973. The announce-
ment of the homecoming queen at 2:30 p.m., in the Northwest Auditorium
kicked off the triumphant annual celebration of fun, food and football that
ended several hours later in the final refrains of the Union Ballroom dance.
In between times, the midway bustled with the excitement of games and the
happy but noisy renewal of old acquaintances. The annual alumni banquet
and meeting followed a faculty art exhibition and a tour of the facilities of
the new registered nursing program. Bands and marching units provided
pre-game and halftime pageantry, and the Ranger football team left the
field 14-7 victors over the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves. In a familiar but chang-
ing scene, "Moving On" was the theme . . . and the mood.

Rangers Return in 1973;
Notch Best Record Since '67

The pre-season promise of the 1973 Ranger football
team was almost fulfilled under head coach Ken Bram-
lett as the team posted the best record of any Ranger
squad since 1967. The first three games of the season
fanned first place hopes as the Rangers downed Jones
14-0, East Central 20-7 and Itawamba 48-21. The 19-7
loss to Hinds stunned the campus which had begun to
buzz and boast about the promising Northwest football
team.

The Rangers bounced back to shut out Northeast 12-
0, and carried a 4-1 record into the East Mississippi
game. That game which was East Mississippi's home-
coming contest was a hard loss for the Rangers who
were defeated 27-21. The Rangers recovered from that
loss by winning their own homecoming game with
Copiah-Lincoln 14-7.

The Rangers lost two of their remaining three games
by one point each. A 14-13 loss to Mississippi Delta was

followed by a 14-0 win over Holmes. The die-hard
Rangers ended the season in Poplarville, losing to
nationally-ranked Pearl River 7-6, as the Rangers tried
for a two-point conversion and a win rather than set-
tling for a tie.

The season was exciting, and a bounce or two of the
ball could have improved the 6-4 record. But the many
outstanding individual performances which sparked
the team were topnotch. Northwest tied East Missis-
sippi in the North Division in sophomore standouts as
both teams sent four players to the Mississippi Junior
College Ail-Star Classic in Tupelo. From Northwest,
Roger Redding of Olive Branch, Larry Hearon and
Roger Washington, both of Webb, and Walter Denton
of Oxford led the North Division All-Stars in a 31-13
romp over the South Division. Denton was named the
game's Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

Rangers Make Good in '74

The Northwest Ranger basketball squad wound up their 1973-1974 regular season with
two losses and one of the poorest showings in several years.

The Rangers had a strong showing in the first half of their season and ended first semes-
ter play with a respectable 7-3 overall record. The Rangers were tied for top honors in the
North Division with a 5-1 conference worksheet. It looked like head coach Noal Akins had
his group off and running.

The second half of the season proved too much for the inexperienced Rangers. Akins,
starting the year out with only three returning players with playing time, lost one of those
to academic standards. Albert Beard left a gap at the guard position that was never quite
filled.

Northwest dropped their first three games to begin the second half of their season. All
three were conference battles and the Rangers could never regroup the conference muscle.
Those three losses left the Ranger record at 7-6, but more important, it dropped the North-
west conference mark to 5-4.

But the Rangers came right back. They won their next four games, three of which were
against North Division foes. The other win in that series was possibly Northwest's biggest
of the year. They dropped perennial powerhouse, Phillips County JC 99-79 to avenge an
early season loss to that same group.

With only two games remaining on their schedule (both conference match-ups) North-
west had a shot at the number two spot in the North Division. They ran into trouble on the
road, dropping an overtime bout with Itawamba. But the Rangers still had a shot at finish-
ing no lower than third place.

Only two nights later the roof fell in on Northwest. For the second straight contest, the
Rangers lost an overtime thriller. This time it was to Mississippi Delta JC and this time it
was at home in Northwest's own gym. Delta was the only team that downed Northwest
twice this season.

So the Northwest Rangers, who had become a Northwest powerhouse in recent years,
had what some considered a disappointing season. But let's take another look.

Ranger head coach Noal Akins finished the year with a respectable 11-8 record. He did it
with an inexperienced team that was shorter and younger than the majority of the teams
they faced.

Noal Akins and all the Ranger basketball squad should be congratulated for an above-
average season in one of the toughest leagues in basketball . . . the MJCC.

Will the Rangers be back next year? We think so. Akins will have three of his starting
five plus a healthy bench to work with. Those players will have gained valuable experience
that only playing can yield. And they did it without losing face. After all, 11-8 is hardly a
record to be ashamed of. Look for the Ranger basketball squad to be at the top in 1975!

After a lapse of several years without a girls' varsity
basketball team, Northwest rejoined junior college
competition with a nine-game schedule. With competi-
tive play and hustling teamwork, the Rangerettes
entered the state tournament with a 3-6 record. The
close-played games that could have gone either way
were not important. What was important was the over-
all success of the program. The Rangerettes had
exceeded all expectations.

Baseball '73

For the second year in a row, Northwest won the North Division baseball
title and then met the South Division winner, Gulf Coast Junior College —
state champions for the last eight years. The Rangers came within four
unearned runs of winning the state title as we lost the championship game
by the score of 4-2. Good overall play sparked the 16-member Northwest
team which contained 10 freshmen and one All-Region Honorable Men-
tion. The Rangers finished the 1973 season with a strong 9-1 record.

Track '73

Though the track was under
water for most of the Northwest
track season in March and April,
the Rangers sloshed to a fifth place
tie in the 1973 state meet and prod-
uced several individual state lead-
ers. Northwest sophomore Robert
Gordon of Hernando won first
place in the discus throw for the
second year, and freshman Johnny
Tullos of Marks was state cham-
pion in the mile run.

ROCKETEER 1974 Honors 'Mr. Mac'

To Reese D. McLendon, whose hand has guided Northwest Mississippi Junior College the last 21 years during a
period of phenomenal growth, this yearbook is respectfully dedicated.

With foresight and dedication, 'Mr. Mac' undertook the leadership of Northwest in 1953 as the third president of a
school with an enrollment of 221 and a physical plant worth $750,000. On June 30, 1974, he will relinquish the reins
of leadership of one of the major educational institutions of the Mid-South. Today, more than 2,300 individuals are
enrolled, on and off campus, in programs directed by Northwest Junior College which now has a physical plant
worth more than $10 million.

'Mr. Mac's' personal credo, "Nothing but the best for Northwest," the foundation upon which the college has
grown, is reflected in the remarkable growth of the last two decades. The principles suggested by the phrase have
been applied to every aspect of the academic community — the student body, faculty and staff, as well as the build-
ings. From 1953 to 1974, 'the best for Northwest' also described the leadership provided by the man who coined the
phrase.

Reese D. McLendon dedicated himself completely to his job as President of Northwest Junior College. And in this
respect, he became an example for everyone. In order for a college to experience such rapid growth, vision with a
timetable was required, and so were long hours and hard work. And 'Mr. Mac' supplied whatever ingredient of lead-
ership the task demanded.

On behalf of the faculty, the staff, the residents of Northwest's district, and the thousands of students who will,
for many years to come, be the benefactors of 'Mr. Mac's' unselfish service to Northwest Mississippi Junior College
— for all of us — we dedicate this yearbook to 'Mr. Mac' And, in so doing, we wish for the McLendons that which
'Mr. Mac' has given us — NOTHING BUT THE BEST.
