Robbins from QB Fred Carlisle.
Ranger defense got on the scoreboard twice in the second quarter. A
safety, provided by a Coahoma Tiger center who overshot his punter,
boosted the Rangers to a 9-0 lead. Linebacker Robert Downing received a

Coaching Staff
Head Coach Kenneth "Cat" Robbins (left)
Coach Coolidge Ball (right)
68
The Rangers
Head basketball coach, Kenneth "Cat" Robbins and assistant coach, Cooiidge Ball, assumed the basketball coaching duties at Northwest
in the summer of 1 975.
Robbins came with outstanding credentials from his many years of coaching, and Ball came after being a standout player at Ole Miss,
where he was an all-SEC performer for three years.
The coaches inherited a talented group of basketball players. When practice began, Coach Robbins and Coach Ball were faced with the
unpleasant task of choosing a squad from some 30 odd hopefuls. They finally trimmed the Ranger squad to 1 2 men, five sophomores and
seven freshmen.
Kenny Robbins, Hubert Turnage, Curtis Spann, Stanley Black, and Jessie Massey were chosen as the main starters for the Rangers.
Other Rangers who helped to make this a successful year include Phillip "Pokey" Holden, Junior Ivy, Lee Bland, William Flores, John
Miller, Windell Howell, and Robert Larrimore.
Each man contributed his part in the success. The Rangers enjoyed and can look back on the season as a job well done.
Pictured above are (front row, I. to r.) Bill Boren, manager; John Miller, Hubert Turnage, Kenny Robbins, William Flores, Lee Bland, (second

The Rangerettes
In 1 975-1 976 more emphasis was placed on women's basketball than in previous years. The women played almost as many home games
as the men and made many of the road trips. New uniforms boosted the Rangerettes' spirit and crowd response was good. Women's basket-
ball made some significant gains this year and even more support and participation are expected in the future.
The Rangerette team members include (first row, I. to r.) Janet McKenzie, Debbie Tackett, Cindy O'Neal, Laurie Allen, Cheryl O'Neal,
Wanda Parrish, Clair Gadd, (second row) Bill Boren, manager; Enill Corbitt, Ruthie Holyfield, Teresa Rodgers, Mary Pruitt, Phyllis Gaither,

1975 Ranger Baseball Team
Spring 1975
Spring 1976
1 975 was Tryce Barber's last year as baseball coach at North-
west. In the four years he coached, he took the Rangers to the state
playoffs twice by winning the North Division title in 1 972 and
1 973. The team finished second in the North Division in 1 974 and
1 975. Coach Barber should be commended for a job well done.
The 1975 team (pictured above) included (1st row, I. to r.) Rob-
ert Akins, Mark Carmichael, Ricky Nelson, Randy Reiter, Terry
Tutor, Ricky Jobes, (2nd row) Steve Adler, manager, Joe Rizzo, Tim
Hogan, Robert Coleman, Gary Edwards, Wayne Brookman, (3rd
row) Coach Tryce Barber, Tracy Busby, Marty Willis, Robert Down-
ing, Tony House, Jack Gadd, and Vince Long.
In 1976 Jim Miles took over the reins as head baseball coach.
Coach Miles played college baseball at Delta State University and
played professional baseball with the Texas Rangers Organization.
He is a valuable asset to the Northwest coaching staff.
1976 returning sophomores (opposite page) include Mark Car-
michael, Terry Tutor, Ricky Jobes, Ricky Nelson, Marty Willis, Joe
Rizzo, Wayne Brookman, Tony House, Robert Downing, Tim
Hogan, and Tracy Busby.

Henry B. Koon, President
The mission of Northwest Mississippi Junior College is to help meet the academic, employment, physical, cultural, and special
needs of the citizens in this 1 1 -county district. Under the administration of President Koon, an enthusiastic and forthright effort is
being made to fulfill this mission.
A second campus was added in the fall when NWJC/DeSoto Center opened at Southaven. Enrollment grew to an all-time
high of 2,375 students on two campuses. The Senatobia campus alone showed a 48 percent increase over last year. Growth at
Northwest has not been limited to enrollment, however. In addition to the acquisition of the Southaven facility, a wide-range
expansion program is changing the appearance of the main campus. The Northwest Coliseum and the Tunica Building were for-
mally dedicated at Homecoming; by spring the new physical plant building was completed and the new baseball diamond was
ready for play. Excavation had begun on the development of the new football stadium and tartin-surface track as part of an
athletic and recreational complex that will include tennis courts, olympic-size pool, and non-varsity sports fields for the intramu-
ral program.
Not only are the physical facilities changing but also the curriculums. Northwest now offers more than 80 different academic,
technical and vocational curriculums. By keeping the best of the old and adopting the best of the new, the college is dedicating
itself to meeting the needs of all the citizens it serves.

Following the annual alumni dinner,
activities moved to Ranger Field. Mrs. Jes-
sie Thompson Baraham and Cecil Burford,
the first two students to enroll at North-
west when it became a junior college,
were presented plaques for being chosen
outstanding alumni for the year. The pres-
entation was made by Tommy Carpenter,
alumni president.
Even though the Rangers were defeated
by Itawamba 0-9, a record crowd was on
hand to lend their support.
The Homecoming dance, sponsored by
the Student Government Association, pro-
vided an exciting end to a busy day.

Sycamore Fair III
Mary Crocker

238
Traditionally a week-long celebration of the various arts, Syca-
more Fair has grown steadily in scope and size since its beginnings
in April, 1 973. Designed by a group of faculty to provide cultural
resources for the college community, the Fair each year presents
guest artists from the worlds of Art, Music, Literature, and Film. The
festival reached its largest audience to date in March, 1975, when
the most versatile of the Fairs, Sycamore III, was presented.
Sycamore Fair III opened with an exhibition of work by Tri-State
Junior and Community College Art Instructors. The distinguished
Mid-South artist Burton Callicott served as juror for the exhibition
and held an afternoon audience captive with his Open Forum on
Art.
Film enthusiasts enjoyed the beauty of "The Reivers" and dis-
cussed its themes and characters with the author and Faulkner
scholar, Dr. Evans Harrington.
Popular story teller Jesse Stuart entranced Fair participants with
tales from his boyhood and his rich and varied career. One of
America's most widely-read authors, Stuart spoke to a record
crowd of 1 1 00 fans.
Music lovers enjoyed an evening of Blues with "Prince Gabe"
and his Millionaires. The lively music of the "Whittlin' Fiddler," Vio-
let Hensley, livened the spirits of Fair-goers, while the lovely bal-
lads of folk singer, Jack Crocker, drew an enthusiastic crowd of
young and old admirers alike.

Fair Day — Spring '75
Each Sycamore Fair has culminated its activities with a special "Fair
Day," a montage of arts, crafts, musical performances, and antique dis-
plays. To these, Sycamore Fair III added, for the first time, special activi-
ties for children, sports displays for athletic enthusiasts, and a flea mar-
ket.
Over 1 400 people visited the arts and crafts demonstrations — weav-
ing by Helen Bryant, metal work by Sandra Beken, needlework by
Aulena Terrell and Elizabeth Scruggs, pottery by Dale Baucum, the
"country cooking" of "Aunt Glad" Harris, and the many handcrafts
taught by the Home Extension Services of Tate and DeSoto counties.
The popular puppeteer Jim Crosthwait and story teller Randi Crawford
captivated the hearts of 1 300 visiting children from kindergarten to sixth
grade, while a petting zoo and antique agricultural displays attracted a
record group of 1200 fair-goers. Finally, Sycamore Fair's first flea mar-
ket became a busy center of activities for over 1 000 eager shoppers.
Sycamore Fair III closed March 21, 1975, having entertained nearly
7000 people — its largest audience so far — in the seven days of its
existence.

DeSoto Center
After receiving requests for additional education opportunities from the people in the rapidly grow-
ing area of DeSoto County, the governing authorities of Northwest Mississippi Junior College, with the
guidance of President Henry B. Koon, chose in 1 974 to investigate establishing an attendance center
in DeSoto County. Much study led to the conclusion that the establishment of a center would enhance
Northwest's ability to meet the needs of the citizens in the district. In July of 1 975, DeSoto Center
became a reality.
The goal of DeSoto Center is to make college education available to the high school graduating
youth and also to the adult, the housewife, the employed, the veteran, and all citizens of the commu--
nity.
For the 1975 fall semester 192 full-time day students were enrolled. Night class enrollment totaled
286 students.
The 1 7-acre campus is one of the most beautiful to be found in the South. It contains a lake of
about three acres, walkways, attractive plantings, garden, and a large fountain. Parking spaces for
250 automobiles and a number of accessible driveways are located on the campus grounds.
The modern four-story facility houses administrative offices, classrooms, a spacious lounge area
and recreation room, and a snack area for the convenience and enjoyment of the students. This year
only two floors have been renovated for use, however, expansion is planned for the near future.
