"What though the radiance which was

once so bright

Be now (or ever taken from my sight.

Though nothing can bring back the

hour

Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the

flower;

We will grieve not, rather find

Strength in what remains behind ..."

William Wordsworth

You and I, we were captured

We took our souls and we flew away

We were right

We were giving
That's how we kept

What we gave away

Neil Young

My back to the wall

A victim of laughing chance

This is for me

The essence of true romance

Sharing the things we know and love

With those of my kind

Libations

Sensations

That stagger the mind

Sailing heart-ships
Thru broken harbors
Out on the waves
In the night
Still the searcher must
Ride the dark horse
Racing alone
In his fright

Tell me lies later

Come and see me

I'll be around lor awhile

I am lonely but

You can free me

All in the way

That you smile

Tell my why

Tell me why

It is hard to make arrangements

With yourself

When you're old enough to repay

But young enough to sell

Neil Young

DEAN WALLACE COLVARD

Dr. Dean W. Colvard was born in Ashe County,
North Carolina. He and his wife, Martha, have three
children, two of them married daughters, and a son.

Dr. Colvard holds the B.S. degree from Berea
College, the M.A. degree from the University of Mis-
souri, the Ph.D. degree and honorary doctorate from
Purdue University, and an honorary doctorate from
Belmont Abbey College.

Some highlights in Dr. Colvard's professional
career are: the professorship of Animal Science at
North Carolina State College for one year before he
assumed the job of department head of Animal
Science at North Carolina State in 1948, in 1953, he
became Dean of Agriculture at North Carolina State
College; from 1960-1966, he served as President of
Mississippi State University; and, in 1966, he
became Chancellor of the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte.

Chancellor Colvard brought about several signifi-
cant developments to the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte after his arrival in 1966. These
are as follows: accreditation by Southern Associa-
tion of Colleges and Schools and accreditation of
programs in Nursing, Chemistry and Engineering;
enrollment increase from 2,014 in 1967 to approx-
imately 9,000 in 1 978; successful organization of the
Patrons of Excellence program with 198 persons,
firms, or foundations pledged to give a minimum of
$10,000 over a period of ten years; the launching of
a graduate program from no program in 1968, to one
with 1,400 students; the addition of a new
professional program in Architecture; and a major
building program now valued at $54 million.

Upon leaving, Chancellor D. W. Colvard
remarked, "It's been a great joy for me to be involved
with this university. My hope will be you give Dr.
Fretwell the kind of support you've given me."

North Carolina at Charlotte, in January, 1 979. He and his wife, Dorrie, have three
daughters and a son.

Dr. Fretwell's degrees include the A.B. with distinction from Wesleyan Univer-
sity, the M.A. in Teaching from Harvard University, the Ph.D. from Columbia Uni-
versity, and an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Wroclaw,

Running hand and hand

Leading no where to stay

Driven to the mountains high

They were sunken in the cities deep

Living in my sleep

Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming

Saying something about a queen

There were peasants singing and drummers drumming

And the archer split the tree

There was a fanfare blowing to the sun

That was floating on the breeze

Look at Mother Nature on the run

Livm' out my college days

With acid and happy gays.

I wanta go home.

Party nites and pagan rites;

I'd like to sleep but all the lights are on.

I wanta go home.

Someone's pumping water down the hall;

I sit and watch as the mold grows on the walls.

So smile awhile and chug another beer,

And ask yourself what the hell you're doin' here?

Parents sitting by the fire, they're gazing at the flame.
Paym' 16,000 bucks to improve your foosball game.
You'd better not go home —
They had to take out a loan.

Well, he's the beer drinkin' King of the Northwest Wing,

And he's built just like a blimp

He's got sixteen girls in rags and curls,

And they all call him pimp —

You know he's never alone.

You got 14 guys and 14 stereos upon the hall.
14 different records, where do they find them all.
So smile awhile and chug another beer,
And ask yourself what the hell you're doin' here —
"What the hell am I doin' here?"

UNCCvs. UNO

As the 49ers were preparing for their 2nd Sun Belt Conference game this year, they found a dismal 0-1
conference record and a 4-6 overall mark. However, all hope was not lost. After convincingly defeating St.
Bonaventure 74-61 in the 1st round of the Milwaukee Classic, the 49ers almost took the title from Mar-
quette in a close 61-57 loss to the 17th ranked Warriors.

The 49ers came into the Superdome to prove to Butch Van Breda Kolff and his Pirateers that our three
previous one point victories were no fluke. They did just that by a victory of 68-63. As in the Milwaukee
Classic, the 49ers showed poise and talent of the UNO team. The main reason was the much improved
play of Phil Scott and his ability to pick up the scoring punch when needed.

Chad Kinch has his usual good game, winning the Eastern Airlines award for his play. However, he
openly admitted that Scott and King were just as deserving.

The 49ers improved play cannot be solely attributed to Scott, King, and Kinch, but rather to a better
overall team effort. The young 49ers, (consisting of only two seniors, Jerry Winston and Kevin King), with
most of the '76 NIT final team and 77 NCAA final four team gone, began to show that they too can play
good basketball. Roland VanDenBergh began demonstrating much better movement around the basket,
making him open for baseline shots and more effectiveness on the boards. Freshman, Phil "Bullseye"
Ward, who had four steals against UNO, had the quickness and shooting the 49ers seemed to lack at first.
Freshman Matt Houpt, also supplied the leadership necessary for a good point man on offense. Jerry
Winston, who has seen more games from the bench than either Lee Rose or Mike Pratt, played excellent.
His ballhandling was very instrumental in keeping the comeback-minded Pirateers away from the 49ers
lead. He connected on two very key 1-1 situations to add four crucial points in the game's waning
minutes.

Hopefully, the 49ers will continue to show improved play to close the season with a good conference
record. If the team has a good season and wins the Sun Belt Tournament, they will get an automatic bid to
the NCAA Tournament. This would be the 49ers second trip to the tourney and a chance, once again, for
national recognition.

SANSKRIT

Sanskrit

James Kirkpatrick,

Editor.

James is a former Creative Writing major

at UNCC, now working on a degree in

Theatre Education. He was Coordinating

Editor last year for Sanskrit but this is his

first year as an elected Editor.

A native of Charlotte, he has had poems

published in several literary magazines,

including CAIRN, ST. ANDREWS

REVIEW, and FOOT (HILL) NOTES.

Beth Davis,
Business Editor.

Beth is a native of Gastonia and is a
Freshman Art major at UNCC. She took
over as Business Editor when Edith Kello
left to take a job in another town. This is
the first time that she has worked on a
literary magazine, although she worked
for her high school newspaper.

2L'0

Linda Cook,
Art Editor.

Linda is an English major at UNCC whose
major interests lie in Photography and
Graphics. Linda took over as Art Editor
when the last Art Editor resigned, and has
done a fantastic job since then. She is a
former native of Ohio and has lived in
Charlotte for over a year.

Dottie Roberson,
Assistant Editor.

Dottie is a former native of Florida, and
recently moved from Concord to
Charlotte. She is a secretary in the Ar-
chitecture Department at UNCC, and
worked as Photographer for Sanskrit last
Spring. She is now photographer and co-
layout editor for Sanskrit.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The Lawrence Ferlinghetti poetry reading was
a first for Sanskrit. It was the first time that San-
skrit sponsored a poetry reading, and the first
major poet to appear on the UNCC campus
for a reading in 1978-79 Academic Year. A
large crowd attended the reading and
hopefully Sanskrit will be able to sponsor
another reading of this magnitude next year.

"You, West Coast Review (Canada), and
Rundy's Journal are the only forums with
sensitivity of which I am aware. It is sad
and it is Magnificent."

— Ronald Bayes,

Executive Editor,

ST. ANDREWS REVIEW

"On the whole, SANSKRIT is an enlighten-
ing magazine for those who appreciate
various expressions of art. It is not a
magazine to be picked up and only glanced
through casually. SANSKRIT requires a
great deal of concentration and a will-
ingness to open the mind and let something
(art) in."

— Joyce Wright

Yes, star-crossed in pleasure, the stream flows on by.

Yes, as we're sated in leisure, we watch it fly.

And time waits for no one,

and it won't wait for me.

Time waits for no one,

and it won't wait for me.

Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman's face.

Hours are like diamonds, don't let them waste.

Time waits for no one,

no favours has he.

Time waits for no one,

and he won't wait for me.

Men, they build towers to their passing, to their fame everlasting.
Here he comes chopping and reaping, hear him laugh at their cheating.

And time waits for no man,

and it won't wait for me.

Time waits for no one.

and it won't wait for me.

Drink in your summer, gather your corn.

The dreams of the night-time will vanish by dawn.

And time waits for no one,

and it won't wait for me.

Time waits for no one,

and it won't wait for me.
