Resolved by the Senate, tJie House of Represe)itatives concurring : 
That the Adjutant General of the State is authorized and instructed to 
prepare and pubHsh a Roster of the oflficers and enhsted men from North 
Carolina, who were in the service of the United States in the war with 
Mexico ; and that a copy of the same be furnished to the Clerk of the 
Superior Court for each county ; and that he be allowed therefor such 
reasonable compensation as the Governor may deem just.

That the Adjutant General of the State is authorized and instructed to 
prepare and jjublish a Roster of the officers and enhsted men from North 
CaroUna. wlio were in tlie service of the United vStates in the war with 
Mexico : and that a copy of the same be furnished to the Clerk of the 
Superior Court for each county ; and that he be allowed therefor such 
reasonable compensation as the Governor may deem just.

P R E F A C E 



111 obedience to the foregoing resolution of the General Assembly, en- 
titled •• A Resolution of Instruction to the Adjutant General in regard 
to the Mexican Pensioners.'" ratified on the 19th day of February, A. D. 
1887, I have prepared from duly authenticated copies of the muster rolls, 
furnished me by the War Department, the following roster of the offi- 
cers and enlisted men from North Carolina wlio were in the service of 
the United States in the War with Mexico : and I hereby certify tlie 
same to be correct. 

The troops froixi North Carolina consisted of the •' First Regiment of 
Foot Volunteers," commanded by Colonel Robert Treat Paine, and com- 
panies G and I. of the 12th U. S. Infantrj^, commanded respectively by 
Captains Walter P. Richards and William J. Clarke. These troops, both 
the regulars and the volunteers, were called into the service of the Uni- 
ted States in the Spring of 1847. and served until the close of the Avar. 
Avhen they were honorably discharged by expiration of service.

The above Roll was signed by E. C. Davidson, 1st Lieut. 3d Dragoons, 
commanding the Troop ; and P. Morrison, Major 8th Infantry, Inspector 
and Mustering OfHcer, at Jefferson BaiTacks, Missouri, where the Troop 
was mustered out of the service of the United States, July 31, 1848. 
AU the members of the Troop were enlisted at Charlotte, except John 
Cody, who enlisted at Lincohiton : WiUiam Sherrell, who enlisted at 
Newton ; David W. Stanford, who enlisted at Morganton ; and WiUiam 
A. Keziah, who enlisted at Monroe. The enlistments were made in 
March and April, 1847, by Captain Caldwell and Lieutenants Davidson 
and Harrison.
