SCRIMSHAW 1970

Southeastern Massachusetts University

North Dartmouth, Massachusetts

DEDICATION TO ACADEMIC FREEDOM . . .

"That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man be-
gins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where nonconformity with the ac-
cepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denun-
ciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where or-
thodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of rea-
son has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to
win or lose.

The mutual confidence on which all else depends can be maintained only by an
open mind and a brave reliance upon free discussion."

New York Supreme Court Justice Learned Hand
Convocation of the Board of Regents
University of the State of New York
October 24, 1952

PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE

The Class of 1970 graduates in the
year marking the 75th Anniversary of
the University — more correctly, of the
founding of the University's predecessor
institutions.

You graduate during a time when the
vast majority of our society is agonizing
over great and divergent social, political,
economic and educational issues. All of
you are a part of this agonizing whether
your behavior is active or passive, con-
ventional or radical. You will all con-
tinue to be a part of this nation's groping
for new and better ways by which human
beings can live happily and productively
together.

Some, perhaps, will persist in their in-
cessant demands to tear down authority
and our established institutions. I hope
the vast majority of you will have a suffi-
cient sense of commitment, together
with the perseverance, to seek honest
and constructive change through meth-
ods which respect the rights of all others,
and that you will have sufficient patience
to insure your being able to truly hear
and understand the points of view of oth-
ers who may not agree with your point of
view.

For those of you who somehow just
haven't been involved, I urge you to be-
come involved, constructively involved
and persistently involved. Should
enough of you follow this course, this
country will be the better for it and this
University's existence will be the more
justified.

Should you, through apathy, or simply
by not really knowing what the issues
are and where the truth lies, not become
truly involved, or through your activities
pervert democratic processes and insti-
tutions, then the University and all of us
connected with it will have helped to do
a serious disservice to a nation and a so-
ciety that deserves your best construc-
tive efforts and has a right to claim your
energies in its quest to attain its ideals.
