If we consider that four seasons of the greening of grass shall have passed since first we
were startled by these new college environs, we must arrive at the conclusion that for most
of us, the academic idyll has terminated, sine die.

If we consider that eight periods of academic interrogation have passed since the first en-
counter with our socratic guardians, we must determine that the interrogation of achieve-
ment in the real world is about to begin, for the university — and SMU in particular —
has been far and away from the real world.

Now that the corporate life beckons to some and demands the obeisance of all, can joe
and jane college grad back off in terror for a moment, and consider where they have
been?

The upheavals and uncertainties of the undergraduate years of '67, '68, 69, 70 and 71
cannot in truth be underestimated. Like it or not, for better or worse, everyone was af-
fected by the rising tide of controversy which swept inexorably across a nation and its uni-
versities.

The systems which fostered the aims of higher education for some by offering financial in-
ducements, was the same system that presided by default at the deaths of college students
at Kent State and Jackson State. The system which at face value supported the quest for in-
dividuality and creativity in the universities, was the same system which preserved by de-
fault the regimes of egocentric men who neither supported nor advanced either activity.

But the symptoms are not to be confused with the malady itself, and the willingness of men
and institutions to deal with even the symptoms was and is in question. Up, in the midst of
these dilemmas, advancing rapidly, came Southeastern Massachusetts University — and a
concomitant tragedy.

■

11

A tragedy in that perhaps the characters — the university, its students, and the community
it was designed to serve — never, ever met.

12

The undergraduate years of the class of 1971 were also the years of sudden departure of lu-
minaries from the American scene — Dr. Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert F. Kenne-
dy were dispatched to their deaths by fanatics who ultimately did harm to their own politi-
cal causes, but not before doing perhaps irreparable harm to the vitality and stability of the
American nation.

Activism, even that of a non-violent nature, quickly led to repression, the mood of the na-
tion changed, and the lifestyles of opportunists underwent similar changes. Controversial
figures, viewed in some quarters of the university as being substitutes for the lost lumi-
naries, were also dispatched, although in a more subtle manner.

is

Days and weeks of seemingly futile protest did not prevail, and the underlying issue was
not actually resolved. The growth of what some felt to be concrete intransigeance was ac-
companied by the growth of concrete structures as a new city of academia rose in the
woods of North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

14

In one respect at least, it was to have one of the attributes of the traditional university, that
of the diversity of attitudes in regard to it. Some felt it characterized by pervasive despair,
others attained an inscrutable neutralism in regarding it, still others were content to wallow
happily in an unorganized and chaotic status quo.

It has been alleged that all new institutions suffer from "growing pains," but a dispassion-
ate observer could not help but speculate on whether those in power at SMU were really at
great pains to grow.

15

The cause celebre of the University and indeed that of the national and the world in the ex-
perience of the class of 1971 was undoubtedly THE WAR. Opposition to the conflict was
widespread and diffuse, and generally articulate, but a gratuitous gesture was generally the
response to organized protest, and the conflict dragged on.

16

Teach-ins and denunciations of government policy were rife, and "the children's crusade"
of Eugene McCarthy seemed to inject new life into a moribund system, but the events in
Chicago in August of 1968 seemed at the time to have sounded the death knell for the sick
American Patient.

\7

Many graduates will remember the SMU day of protest against the war, and the night-time
candlelight vigil that followed — others perhaps will remember their rejection of the pro-
test and of the alleged lack of patriotism that accompanied it, these memories will become
part of one's recollections of SMU long after the conflict in Southeast Asia is over — but
who will remember young men lying dead on a battlefield?

18

". . . The earth . . ." we have been told . . . "abideth forever," but in the waning years of
the last decade, and early in the Seventies, it became apparent that the latter biblical verity
was in jeopardy. That seemingly unperishable contribution of nature to man was endan-
gered, and the ensuing ecological vanguard or bandwagon led students across the nation to
f'a celebration in praise of life," on Earth Day, April 22, 1970.

i?

Few will remember the several rejoiners of various groups to "become involved" in the
struggle to reclaim spaceship earth, but infinitely fewer will forget — or escape — pollut-
ed aif and rivers and the usurpation of America's landscape.

20

Man's glorious destiny in the skies, to some reflected in what might be the event of the dec-
ade, the landing on the moon — seemed marred by our ignominous accomplishments in
laying desolate vast reaches of the legacy of generations. But APOLLO on the moon cap-
tured the imaginations of men from North Dartmouth to New Delhi, thankfully obscuring
for a time, the import and immensity of problems at home.

21

The chaos of our post-pubescent experiences served to make us always alert to new experi-
ences of pleasure — one needed relief in addition to the acquisition of a social conscience.
And in addition to the needed relief, one acquired a new feeling for the human condition,
from Woodstock to the Woods of Dartmouth.

22

Our home born rock festival needs no further paeans; even if the Woodstock nation did not
become the children of the Woods of Dartmouth, we were very much together and shall be
having festival memories for a very long time.

But even prior to the upsurge in the discarding of the old ways, change was coming. The
unlamented death of the button down shirt and penny loafers was indicative of change not
only in modes of dress, but truly of attitudes.

24

Change was manifested in many revolutions, some violent, some peaceful and one that was
green. But the resistance to change too, had impact on our lives, and many saw the face of
fear and repression across America — and it was not good.

25

Great social change, accompanied by the changes in our own lives as individuals, leads us
now to the future and the kind of world which we shall seek for ourselves. Here Ibsen held
'That man is in the right who is most closely in league with the future," and Leon
Gambetta added that, "No one can forbid us the future," and that is well enough.

1971 SMU SCRIMSHAW YEARBOOK DEDICATION

Some men build institutions, and take pride in the tangible effects of their efforts. Some men
build lives never too sure as to when and in whom their effect began, but certain that once begun
their efforts will have born the fruits of human betterment in ways unknown and in persons unseen.
Such a man is the man to whom this yearbook is dedicated — Dr. Robert Lyden McCabe.

To two generations of SMU students, Robert McCabe has been the consummate teacher of Math-
ematics — and much more. A man of brilliant intellect, he has brought to his role a thorough
knowledge of his subject, a love for its logic and a desire that those to whom he teaches it would ac-
quire both. His superb teaching skills have made it possible for him to convey to his students the
contagious joy of pursuing truth and the thrill of discovery. Though tough and demanding in his
standards of academic excellence, he treats his students with the humility of respect — making
them his companions in learning.

Always a professional, his classroom has never been a platform for his deeply felt, and strongly
held political and social convictions. These he rightly reserved for the larger classroom of the Uni-
versity and public communities.

It is in these arenas where the force of his intelligence and personality have combined to confront
the prejudices, the contentments, the lethargies of people who refuse to become involved with the
issues of war, racism, poverty, and human injustice. By so doing he has become to some a figure of
controversy, to others a target of their defensive anger, but to those who know him best a coura-
geous symbol of the conflicts within the crisis of our times.

Where once he stood almost alone in raising his voice against the wrongness of the Vietnam war,
he is now but one amongst the majority of those who share the moral foresight of his wisdom. His
has been the battle against all the forms of tyranny that attempt to shackle the capacities of man to
think and live free. Not without great cost to himself and his professional career has he entered the
ranks of the committed. His example has inspired others to follow.

For all of this — for touching our inner possibilities — for introducing us to those mysterious
moments when mind challenges mind and we have suddenly, magically sensed the power and rich-
ness of our own intellects and potential, we lovingly dedicate this yearbook.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Southeastern Massachusetts University North Dartmouth, Massachusetts 02747

Office of the President

August 22, 1971

It is traditional at SMU that the President of the University, on
request of the Yearbook editor, provide a brief message for the
graduating class for publication in the Scrimshaw. As I have received
such a request, I feel obligated to respond to it. However, it is not,
and has never been, my nature to say things I don't believe or to
simply try to address students in oral or written stylized empty rhetoric.
With that as prologue, my message to you, members of the Class of 1971,
follows .

It should be understood that it is not meant for you alone and, most
certainly, it is not meant for all of you. Frankly, I am much worried
about the future of this great nation and your future as well. My worry
is based on certain patterns of behavior which have been manifested in
many of the members of this Class. I worry about young people who preach
love and act with hate; about young people who can so misunderstand free-
dom as to define it as license; who, in the name of sensitivity, are
brutally insensitive toward their fellow human beings. It grieves me,
in many instances, to see a sufficient number of you choose for your
leadership weak and less than moral persons. It grieves me also to see
a number of you hold up for honor and admiration individuals either
incapable of meeting, or unwilling to meet, their just and clearly under-
stood professional commitments to the academic community. Most worrisome,
however, is the group too often correctly called the silent majority.
Members of this group have very little of which they may be proud

220

-2-

and they have no just claim to the liberties and advantages inherent
in a free society for they have, by default, failed to earn or even
protect them. My hope is that you will become involved in greater

numbers in your society that you will search harder, with greater

maturity, greater love and greater insight to find among your own
classmates and within your own peer group, as well as from among
those generations older than you who are, equally with you, members
of this society, a better quality of leadership and a better under-
standing and appreciation of the true meaning of the basic tenants of
the Republic of the United States of America. Get on with your search

then, for you have yet a frighteningly long way to go. For all of it,

it
I wish you success.

RAYMOND E. LADUE

LEONARD E. RAMOS

The following tribute was delivered in October of 1970 at the graveside rites of Leonard E.
Ramos of Fall River by SMU Dean of Men, Donald C. Howard. Ramos, Class of 1971 Political
Science major, died of gunshot wounds received during an armed robbery of a Fall River liquor
store where he served as a part time clerk. Though Dean Howard's remarks on that occasion were
directed to the memory of a specific individual, we the Editors feel that they speak an eloquent
and universal truth about death.

"We come at this moment to the last and inevitable step in the ancient religious ritual of an an-
cient church — the burial of the dead. We, who this day stand here beside an open grave, coming
as we do from disparate backgrounds, represent the human connections of life to one whose life is
no longer with us. By this symbolic act of presence, we have come to share with those who bear
the greatest grief and express to them and for ourselves the sorrow of all those who have loved —
and lost.

"Leonard Ramos was a good man in a world desperately in need of the good. He was good in
the beautiful sense of that term — wherein he sought to live out in his actions and deeds a genu-
ine concern for the welfare and well being of others. He was a gentle man and kind, in a world
marked by harshness and cruelty, and which pleads unceasingly for just a little kindness. He was
a man who knew more truly than most that I have known the essence of fraternity. He was a
member of one of the leading fraternities of our University. And to that group as an officer and
brother he demonstrated an example of what it was to be a brother in the larger brotherhood of
man. He found in that fraternal relationship the opportunity for broadening his capacity for love.
As a result, he grew in his personhood a more secure man, more sure of his identity.

rfHe was a constructive man, whose quiet leadership influence was felt in other areas of the
University's student life. He served this past year as an active creative member of a committee
which drafted the University's new Student Judiciary. He served in that function because he be-
lieved that students were no less entitled than others to the protection of due process and fair
treatment in matters of discipline. He was later rewarded by the confidence of his fellow students
in being selected by them to sit as a justice on the University's Discipline Board, the highest judi-

cial agency within the system the document created.

"He was a man, as one of his closest friends said to me the evening he died, who had a genuine
regard for an opposite point of view. He had respect for the other person's opinion. In a universi-
ty community divided by polarization, he was a uniter.

"The tragedy of Lenny's death is not that he died, for all of us must cross this bar sooner or
later, but that he was cut down so brutally and so young. He was a victim of this age. The violence
of his death was but a continuing reflection of the senseless violence which grips our society
today. It was a measure of his splendid compassion that when confronted before he died by the
criminal fiend who so mercilessly shot him, he could say to him, T should hate you, but I don't
because you are sick."

"But when all is said and done and this final act is completed, what more, if anything, can be
said; from what concept of life can we take comfort? In these modern times, mourning has ceased
to be modish. However, as someone else has said the fact of death forces us to pause a moment in
our doings, suspending our prides and panaceas, pause in the frustration of our enemies and the
planning of our wars; pause to savor the sweet miracle of life and the solemnity of death, to ask
ourselves what the purpose of our existence is, after all — the existence that man did not create,
that is only leased to him in trust, and that does not belong to him to destroy. For you, Mr. and
Mrs. Ramos, is the comfort of memory — the memory of a son whom you brought into the world
and had with you for 22 years of life. A son into whom you put the best of yourselves and who in
turn prided you with a nobility and strength of character. For you, his sisters, for you, his family
relations, for all of us, his friends, who are here in such numbers this morning, there is that
awareness that our lives in some way are the richer and the better for Lenny's contact with us and
his impact upon us. In that realization there is comfort.

fYet, there is a comfort that supercedes any of these, the comfort which comes from faith in
that paradoxical, unfathomable truth, which is the central issue of Christian doctrine, and by
which Christianity is content to stand or fall — the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In
order to redeem us from our sins and to make us righteous before His Father, He went into the
jaws of the grave and of death. Someday, so must we. He returned from the grave and death to
reign as a living saviour. So shall we. For He said — "I am the resurrection and the life, he that
believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die." That is the greatest and most enduring comfort of all."
