The SMU yearbook's name — Schrimshaw — was chosen in 1967 when a
committee of SMU administrators and student senators reviewed the entries
of a campus-wide contest to name the yearbook. The winning entry was
'Schrimshaw.' "It was the perfect title for the yearbook of a college in the
middle of a sea-faring community where the art of schrimshaw originated,"
said Donald C. Howard, Dean of Students, who was one of the judges on the
committee.
The art of schrimshaw was developed in the early part of the nineteenth
century by American sailors to express their creative interests. Sailors careful-
ly carved delicate images of ships, whales, and seascapes on shells, bones,
and pieces of ivory. The art pieces captured the sailors' memories of their sea
voyages.
So it is with Schrimshaw — creating a yearbook is done in the same manner.
The staff carefully collects photographs and written articles then organizes
them into a book which captures the moments of students' years of earning a
college education.

Dr. Walter J. Cass
^ 3flain people 1tat we meet at the way stations of our lives touch our spirits and leave upon thenn the per-
manent impress of their personalities. Dr. Walter J. Cass is such a person.
■through some generoi}simpulse of fate, Dr. Cass bonded with this institution long before it dreamed the ti-
Ctle4Joiversity. He began as an English professor in 1948 at the Bradford-Durfee Institute of Technology
and'played a key rote first in uniting that school with the New Bedford Institute of Technology and then in
^ielping the merged institutions evolve into SMU. During his 40 years of service as a professor of English
nd German and, more recently, of education, he has dedicated himself to imparting not only subject
5natter,i)tiL|h& essence of a liberal arts education. We, along with generations of students, have delighted
s*fiuffior7 learned from his wisdom, and found support in his compassion. In his view, all of his pupils
have been prizes. He has cherished and nurtured our individuality and stretched our minds with the varied
richness of his knowledge and interests. We will not forget him, this Renaissance man who taught us day
by day and year by year the real definitions of teacher, mentor, and friend; one cannot forget what is
rooted in the heart. And Walter Cass, to whom we dedicate this book, is rooted and evergreen in ours.

A MESSAGE
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
February 2, 1988
To the Class of '88:
The term "Janus-faced" has come to
mean "two-faced, deceitful." Perhaps
this is because the Roman god Janus was
in fact usually represented as having two
faces of contrasting aspect.
It is unfortunate that few people remem-
ber that Janus was the god of doorways,
beginnings, and the rising and setting of
the sun. "Janus-faced," if the term were
to be true to the character of the god,
should, in consequence, mean "at the
threshold; looking forward and backward,
inside and out; aware of beginnings and
endings, contrast and polarity like dawn
and dusk."
I suspect the symbol of Janus represents
in a profound way your own condition,
your own perspective at the close of your
college career. Past and future, the inter-
nal and the external, the alternating
rhythms of life are more immediate, more
present at certain times. And this should
be one.
I hope it is a good time, and that the
prospect is pleasing in whichever direc-
tion you look.
Congratulations and good luck to you all.
Sincerely,
John R. Brazil
President

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
Interim Dean John Chopoorian
Under two areas of study, business administration and textile science, seven academic programs
lead to obtaining a Bachelor of Science diploma.
Whether in accounting, finance, huprf^fresoua||pPT5'nagement, nrfSMfci^efit, marketing, textile
chemistry, or textile technology, the curriculU^nraditionally accentuawljbusiness communica-
tions, business judgement, and computer skills. This successful educational background enables
graduates to fully understate the economy, the society, and the business ent^rpWBH'
Writing, creative thinking, an^Tberal arts are also emphasized within the college's "rigorous"
curriculum to produce "cultural dimension" for the students, says Dean Chopoorian.
Looking into the near future, there are plans to internationalize the college of Business and
Industry. Says Chopoorian, an "international flavor" within the curriculum will prepare the stu-
dents for the growing demands of world business.

RETURNING STUDENTS
ORGANIZATION
The returning students organization is run by and for people who have returned to
college after a break in their formal educational process. Membership is free and
open to all who are interested in the unique concerns of those whose are age 25 and
older and have experience that classify them as non-traditional students. The
purpose of the organization is to provide support, information and a voice for
returning students to SMU. We sponsor many workshops and get togethers geared
especially to the returning student, such as workshops on time management, stress
management and income tax preporation, as well as discussion groups, dinners and
coffee hours

Gay-Lesbian
Alliance
Smugia is, primarily, a support organization that is open to anyone. We have
weekly meetings during the academic year. During our meetings, we discuss
issues pertaining to gay/lesbian lifestyles and the political ramifications in to-
day's society. We also try to provide a social service as well. Some of the things
we have done in the past are dances, and guest speakers.

FOR YOU BRYAN K. HARRIS
Alone I sit with nothing in my head
I loved my friend, and now he's dead
He was always happy, never mad
Now its us who are sad
Bryan was loved by one and all
Now his friends must suffer a fall
God knows how badly we've been pained
But because we were his friends . . .
God knows there was so much from him we
gained
we love you Bryan Rest in peace, we'll miss you
Michael Crosby

A poem written just for Bryan
What do you do when you are so confused?
How do you handle the bad news?
Everyone was happy and having fun,
When I found out Bryan's life was all done.
All I wanted to do was cry
And I couldn't stop asking the question why?
Why Bryan? - He was so young,
He never hurt anyone!
He was always happy, never mad
To know he's gone, hurts so bad.
There were so many things I wanted to say,
But I kept putting them off til another day.
Now, he is gone - what shall I do?
All I want to say is, "Bryan I miss you!"
I do miss him oh, so much.
And I wish I could feel his gentle touch.
I can't help asking why-
He was taken away without letting me say good-bye.
It hurts so much when you lose a friend.
But the worst thing of all, is knowing he is never coming back again,
Bryan had so many friends that cared.
And the pain of his death is what we shared.
He is someone we will never forget.
And being without him is what we regret.
Death is something that is so hard to understand.
But I know Bryan is with us, lending a hand.
And you must remember when you think about Bryan.
To make sure that you keep smilin'.
Because that is how he would want you to be,
After all, wasn't he always happy?
K.D.

It is a difficult task to compile a book that reflects the history, the moods and the events of a single year
of University life. It has been our aim to cover events relevant to the majority of students, while including
individuals from every campus group. It is a rather high aim, but I hope that we have succeeded in
providing a book that through the years will spark the memory of every student.
I would like to express my appreciation to those who have contributed to the production of the 1988
Scrimshaw. First, to the staff who spent many long, hard hours, the Imagemakers-our school photogra-
phers, Nerval Garnett-our Josten's Representative, and lastly to all the students and faculty members
who helped to achieve a 1988 Scrimshaw.
Best of Luck Class of 1988!
