The Norman C. Dion Biulding

Dedicated on May 5, 1989

Dean Donald Clayton Howard

Every university has its legend and SMU is
no exception. Our legend is very much
alive and has an office in the administra-
tion building. This office is always full of
students and its door is always open. Our
legend's name is Donald C. Howard and
we who have spent four years under his
wing see his office as a perfect metaphor
for his heart.

Officially, his title is Dean of Students, but
it could just as easily be "Friend of Stu-
dents", for such Donald Howard has been
during the last twenty three years. Elo-
quent and persuasive, he is always willing
to speak for students, to right their wrongs,
to promote their dreams, to make real their
hopes, and to introduce them to the world
of their choosing. He has a gift for coun-
seling and considers it a major function of
his position to make himself truly available
to those who seek his guidance. A cham-
pion of causes and people, he is that rare
individual in any community, educational
or otherwise, who spends without hesita-
tion the riches of his spirit and his days on
others.

Dean Howard's involvement with student
organizations and activities has been
extensive and productive. Individuals in
the process of choosing graduate schools
or starting careers also find Dean
Howard's assistance invaluable and un-
stinting. From writing thoughtful recom-
mendations to helping graduates find the
right job, he so genuinely wants what is
best for others, that instinctively they put
their hopes in his hands and their trust in
his advice. Nor does his interest in his
students end when they are handed their
degrees. He remains a presence in their
lives through the years, attending their
weddings, encouraging their careers,
comforting their sorrows, sharing their
triumphs.

Donald Clayton Howard

Dean Howard with Massachusetts Senator John Kerry

True to form, Dean Howard is as active in the affairs of
the community as he is in the life of the University. He
devotes much time and energy to the political causes
and candidates he judges honorable and worthy. In
turn, he is counted a respected friend whose discerning
judgment and shrewd political insight are sought by
governmental leaders at all levels from Governor and
U.S. Senators to members of the state legislature.

A staunch promoter of the arts and humanities Dean
Howard has been a consistent force over the years in
securing major student financial backing for those pro-
grams and projects that culturally enrich not only the
learning atmosphere of the University but that of the
region as well. In his role as chairman for nineteen
years and in more recent times as co-chairperson of the
SMU Lecture Series Committee he has played a princi-
pal part in bringing to the campus some of the world's
most famous authors, political leaders, stars of stage
and screen, and television personalities. To all of them
he has been the University's gracious host.

When students and alumni talk about Dean Howard, as
they often do, a theme emerges, certain key words and
phrases are heard over and over again: all speak of his
compassion and unconditional support, his sage ad-
vice, his willingness to invest chunks of time and self to
listen, to guide, to illuminate, to rescue those in emo-
tional jeopardy. With a perceptiveness that penetrates
as sharply as a laser beam, he sees the potential be-
neath an individual's often misleading surface. And
once he sees it, he delights in helping that person
uncover it, shape it, develop it. He is a true miner of
diamonds in the rough. And many a human gem
flashes brilliantly today because of Dean Howard's
determination to convince his charges of their own
worth.

It is perhaps as the consummate mentor that he would
most wish to be remembered, for in this role - in this
vocation - he has no peer. All his considerable people
skills, all his humanistic beliefs and generosity of spirit,
his mischievous wit and innate wisdom, the cosmopoli-
tan perspective and brilliant scope of his well-nour-
ished mind - all these come together to make him not
only a gifted counselor, but a cherished one. It is true
that his methods may be somewhat unorthodox, com-
bining as they do, complete acceptance of an individ-
ual with a little good-natured needling, intense and
patient listening with what one former student has
called "A unique way of 'whacking you on the side of
the head' to unleash your potential." But, above all,
his methods are effective. Through the futures of those
whom he nurtures, through their careers and personal
lives, his influence sends out ripples.

'The Dean" is a man whose life hums with content-
ment. He loves his work; he relishes the friendships he
makes; he is enchanted with the variety of his experi-
ences. He is a strong personality, colorful, courageous,
rich with opinions and loyalties, intensely dedicated.
Despite his sophistication, he has not lost his sense of
honor, nor a certain appealing innocence, nor a talent
for joy. It is this that he communicates to us, thus that
he inspires us. Winston Churchill, one of Dean
Howard's own great inspirations, said:

Don't take no for an answer, never submit to failure.

Do not be fobbed off with mere personal success or

acceptance.

You will make all kinds of mistakes; but as long as

you are generous and true, and also fierce, you

cannot hurt the world or even distress her.

And so, Dean Howard, because you have been "gener-
ous and true, and also fierce" and by being so, made
our burdens lighter, our paths clearer and our futures
full of hope, we dedicate this book to you.

President John R. Brazi

To the Class of '89:

For most, the time spent in college is a time of personal change.
It is a time of intellectual growth and affective development,
a time when personality and perspective expand, a time when one
comes to grips with important issues of self and society.

Members of the class of 1 989 have, I hope, experienced these
things. But you have also been fortunate to witness important
changes in the topography of your University. During your stay,
the Swain School of Design merged into the College of Visual and
Performing Arts, the curriculum became "computerized," we began
several new graduate programs, a new science and engineering
building and a new dormitory complex were completed,
intercollegiate football was resumed, and so on.

In one sense, you are not the same person you were when you
arrived here. In another sense, while you may be different in
many important respects, you are also still you. Similarly, SMU
is not the same University you first encountered, but it is still
SMU. As I write this there has been considerable discussion
about "reorganizing" higher education in the Commonwealth and of
SMU adopting a new name. These things may or may not come to
pass, but whatever changes occur, if any, you may rest assured
SMU will continue, in the second sense, to be SMU. If identity
is at least part process and part continuity of purpose and if
there is at its core an essence unmitigated by events, SMU will
remain SMU by whatever name.

Sincerely,

UU/te^

The Mile

People come into our lives

And walk with us a mile

And then because of circumstance

They only stay a while.

They serve their need within their days

That pass so quickly by.

Then they're gone without a trace

We often wonder why.

God only knows why we meet

And share a simple smile

Why people come into our lives

And walk with us a mile.

-Anonymous
In memory of Kristen Engstrom,
August 12, 1967-April 29, 1988.

Wandering alone, I looked up to the
sky and contemplated the clouds.

In these trying times we find ourselves
seeking reason in a patternless reality.

Finding our way through the tangled
paths of life, we decide our own way,
hoping our decision is best.

If we should lose our way we must
remember a day when the sun did shine.

And on this journey, we carry with us
a little part of all those we have met.

Some of these memories fade, and
some remain with us always, as perfect as
the day we held them for the first time.

And as I ponder the day when my
journey shall end, I realize, I care not if my
memory fades or lives on beyond me.

I care only that those that I have
touched may be happier and their step a
little lighter.

Dr. Robert P. Pallatroni

Bob had a special gift.

More than a talent, more than a skill, - a gift

His work was infused with it, his world view ordered and strengthened by
it, as a teacher, as a therapist, as a friend.

After his death, talking to his colleagues, his students, his clients, it was
obvious that he was a unique person. People liked him. They liked him
very much. People who knew little more than Bob's public persona liked
him, they saw the essential gift he had, and understood that it was a gift
for them as well.

Talking to people, listening to what they said, the fact of the gift became
apparent.

"He makes me feel as though he cared about me, cared about how I felt"
said one person.

"Even in a large lecture, I felt as though he were talking to me, that it
made a difference to him if I understood or not" observed a student

"He always had a smile for me" recalled an associate

"He made me feel important, he always stopped to say hello"

"Warm, funny, kind, caring, a real person, a great guy"

Not just a few people felt this way- lots of people felt these things.

Will Rogers said that he never met a man that he didn't like - 1 never met
a person that didn't like Pal. I think that was because of his gift.

The gift of affirmation.

Affirmation in the sense of confirming the existence, the reality of the
other person, the trueness of the other person.

Affirmation in the sense of the confirmation of the positive qualities of
goodness of the other person.

Pal was real. He understood that other people were not shadow figures
that they were real, real ideas, real feelings, real fears, real hopes. He saw
the essential reality in the other person.

And he understood the essential positiveness, the goodness of the other,
he trusted that the fundamental nature of the other person was good, that
the prisoner was good, that the drug addict was good, that the explosive,
delinquent adolescent was good, that the dysfunctional parent was good.

To affirm. To recognize the existence, to confirm the fact of a person's
essential goodness, and worth is a wonderful thing to give that person. It
is made even more wonderful when the person is troubled, or alone or
afraid.

As a psychologist, Bob belonged to a theoretical school which places
great emphasis on the working alliance between therapist and patient.

As Fisher observed:

Authentic therapy emerges only if the doctor can hit upon a true way of
being with the patient, a way that is not solemnly helpful, or a way of
making money and being important, or a way of satisfying his need for
dominance and potency. This genuineness employs nascent skills-
sensitivity and imagination and compassion - which are aroused by the
problems and the nature of the particular patient.

Bob had this working alliance with many of us. We are confirmed in our
essential reality and our essential goodness because of it.

It is Bob's gift to us. It is a gift we are compelled to share with others.

Dr. Francis X. O'Brien

Rose-lipped maidens ... lightfoot lads.

You let us live so freely. You weighed on us so lightly.

Whether 3 or 93 we be, we were laddies and lassies all.

You distracted us with grace. You disarmed us with humor.

And all the while, you had a hand upon the helm of a ship larger than we

could see.

We gather as a community: each touched - each deeply marked - not by
brute force - but by the gossamer tugs of your civility. "The true test of
civilization" - Emerson saw - was "Not in the census ... and not in the
crops, ...but in the kind of man the country turns out." Civilization is a
commons, but it is the work and gift of a few like you.

Who made a man so straight and true as you?1

We gather as community. We know you many ways: as son, as brother,
as husband, and as father — as citizen, seaman, mentor, colleague and as
a friend. But we knew a single face: "an honest thought ...a common good
...a gentle life ...so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all
the world "This was a man!"

With each of us you set a course and made a mark upwind - bare poles or
full sail - your joy as much the journey as in the journey's end.

Who made a man so straight and true as you?

How proud must a family be to have engendered and nurtured such a
man! How proud you were of them.

Most know you loved the sea - and snails and worms and starfish and
slimy creatures of the deep. But another love was language - English -
from Pope to Pinafore, to simply the richness of her verbs. Tis uncommon
in a man - when barely past one-and-twenty - to take Shakespeare with
his salt. But you saw a special quest: What should a man do? What dose a
man's life mean? That was pure biology. Your answers were your deeds.

With Louis Agassiz you contemplated the wisdom of the Creator as
manifest in the works of His Creation. But you also sat alone - and the end
of the day, when the books were closed and microscope light turned out -
you let the Creator's Rift of thought hold sway. The imagination fired - "a
chaos of delight."

The instant

As trivial as it is

Is all we have

Unless- unless

Things the imagination feeds upon,

The scent of the rose.

Startle us anew. (William Carlos Williams)

John Kennedy in Dublin found the future in: men who can dream of
things that never were." Your loves of the sea and of nature and of the
language were fuel for the fires of your mind. You loved others - such as
Tennyson - who had sailed this route before:

Flower in the crannied wall,

I pluck you out the crannies.

I hold you here, root and all, in my hand.

Little flower - but if\ could understand

What you are, root and all, and all in all,

I should know what God and man is.

But you did not voyage alone. Life was to be shared. You came to
Southeastern Massachusetts University over 20 years ago to help build a
university - to help shape our community. It was - after your family - the
love of your life. And oh, how you did toil. It was not just a place to work,
but a place to build dreams. And you knew - like Whitehead - that it took
a special mix to make it work: " The justification of a university is that it
preserves the connection between knowledge and the zest for life, by
uniting the young and the old in the imaginative consideration of
learning. The university imparts information, but it imparts it imaginatively
...A university which fails in this respect has no reason for existence."

From the

Eulogy for Francis Xavier O'Brien (1 935-1 989)

Delivered at St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth, Massachusetts

18 September 1989

by Robert K. Edgar

Year after year we collect the memories that pass and draw them
together for everyone to see and keep for days to come. Every year seems
just like the last, it is only the faces that slowly change. Day after day we
search for new ideas, but they all seem the same. Slowly, ever slowly, we
decide on just the right picture, just the right phrase, and just the right
combination, to hold these memories.

It is often that a memory slips by, forever lost. We can not relive the
moments, only present what we have, hoping they are enough to bring back
the thoughts of yesterday.

The loss of the memories that have slipped by is indeed a sad one.
We hope that those we do have for you will bring back the days once lived
and spark the imagination of the future.

We thank you for trusting us with the care taking of your past.

Sincerely,

Those who brought you the 1 989 Scrimshaw
