The following imperfect sketch of the descendants of Jared Bourn
is published for private distribution, with the expectation of having, at
some future time, the materials for a fuller and more perfect list.

In the early days of this country, the town records of births, deaths,
and marriages were not only very imperfectly kept, but were kept
without any attempt at classification ; so that the work of examining
them carefully is both very slow and difficult. ,

If any person will point out to me any eiTors in this work, or will
send me any additional details, I will thankfully receive the same.

A. 0.. BOURN.
Bristol, R. I., January, 1875.

FIRST GENERATION.

Jared Bourn probably came to this country in the "fleet," in
1630, with Governor Winthrop. He was admitted to the church in
Boston April 22, 1634, when he was in the employ of Elder William
Colborne, and a freeman May 6, 1635. December 18, 1637, there was
granted to him " eight acres of land bounded on the South West with
Robert Houlton — on the North- West with the Cedar Swamp and on
the South-east with Muddy River and on the North-east with John
Briggs." He bought or had grants of other parcels of land, as is
evident from his recorded deeds, though there is no record of such
purchases or grants.

His name is spelled on the town records " Garret," " Jarrard,"
"Gerard," and "Jarrett," but in all the deeds the signature is "Jared."
This discrepancy between the actual name and the name as written hy
other persons on the records, is noticeable even as far down as the
beginning of the present century. The name " Bourn " is most always
spelled " Born," or " Boorn," on all the town records. But whenever
the name is written by its owner, it is always spelled " Bourn." That
he resided a long time at Muddy River, now Roxbury, is evident from
the following extracts from the Town Records :

26th of the 8th mo. 1640. '-Our brother Thomas Grubb and our brother
Garret Bourne are appointed overseers of the fence at Muddy River in the
common field to see it made by the first of April, and. in default of every rod
not then repaired and made, the owners of the said land are to forfeit 3s. 4d.
per rod and the said overseers shall have power from the townsmen to
distrain for such moneys growing due."'

23d 12th mo. 1651. "Jarrett Bourne complains that Ralph Roott makes
use of his marsh at Muddy River which was formerly granted to Jacob Elliott
as appears by the record the first of 5th mo. 1637, for the deciding the Bounds
thereof Deacon Marshall, Ensign Oliver, and Peter Oliver are chosen to view
the grounds and to make return thereof forth-with."

6 FIRST GENERATION.

23d 12th mo. 1G51. "William Beamsly and Jarrett Bourne are chosen to
see the general fence at Muddy River to be put into repair according to order."

26th of the second month 1652. " It is ordered that William Bearasley
and Jarrett Bourne shall see the general fence at Muddy River, shall be put
into repair according to order of Court."

12th 1st mo. 1653-4, Jarret Bourne was chosen constable for Muddy
River.

From the Book of Possessions :

" Garret Bourn's possessions, within the limits of Boston, one house and
garden bounded with Edward Rainsford, East, the marsh South, and the
street West and North." I

That about the year 1655 he removed to Rhode Ishind, is evident
from this extract from the Massachusetts Colony Records :

23d May 1655. "In answer to the petition of Edward Kiliby for relief of
respect of a child, now in his custody, of Garrett Bourne, this court orders
that the land and house of the said Bournes, now under seizure by the
county shall be disposed of for the cliilds use, by the selectmen of the town
of Boston, provided their power shall not extend to make sale of the same,
but the propertie to remain to the child :"

And from the fact that in his deed of October 5, 1664, he calls
himself "formerly of Boston,'" and in his deed of October 27, 1665,
he calls himself a resident of " Rhode Island." Moreover we have the
following proofs from the town records of Portsmouth, R. I.:

••January the 23d (1654-5). At a toune meeting it is voted for this toune
tojoyne with ueuport in the purchase of Connuniquut Island, and William
Almy, and Thomas Lawton are chosen to goe to Neuport to treate with them
aboute the joyninge with them in the purchass of the aforesayd Island.

Jcrit Borne is received an inhabitant this day."

'•June the 4th, (1655). Jeritt Bourn is chosen a juryman for the general
court of tryals to be houlden at Pourtsmouth the last tuesday of this present
month of June."

"October 18, 166T. The ear marks of Jared Borne is two croops slit in
ye Right eare."

Jared Bourne^ had a wife, Mavy. There is no record of their marriage,
nor her maiden name. The following is the record of her death " Mary,

FIRST GENERATION. 7

uxor, Garret Bourne died the 30tli of the 3d month 1644." They had
a child,

2. Jared, (called both Gerard and John on the records,)

born June 6, 1G43 ; died June 30, 1043. There
are two records of this birth : " Gerard the son of
Gerard Bourne of Boston was born the 6th of the
6th month 1643 ;" " John the son of Garret and
Mary Bourne born 30th of the 5th mo. 1643 —
died the 30th of the 6th mo. 1643.'" His second
wife's name was Francis, as appears from his deed
of October 27, 1665. They had a child,
