SOME DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM ADAMS
OF IPSWICH, MASS.

The germ of the following record was printed in the New England
Historical and Genealogical Register for July, 1864, with nearly this
introduction :

"'Adams, William, Cambridge 1635, or earlier, freem. 22
May 1639, rem. prob. bef. 1642, to Ipswich, but at C. had Wil-
liam, Nathaniel, and Samuel, prob. b. in Eng. and he d. 1661.'
So much may be read in the Genealogical Dictionary of New Eng-
land ; but except that one line of the descendants of William junior
is traced by Miss F. M. Caulkins in Vol. XXXI. of the Collections
of the Mass. Historical Society, and by another hand in Vol. VIII.
of the N. E. Historical and Genealogical Register, nothing more is
known concerning this family ; and the author of the latter article,
Dr. Ashbel Woodward, 'says, ' The descendants of Wm. in the
male line have long since become extinct ' ; while Mr. Frederick
Kidder, the Historian of New Ipswich, conjectures that Ephraim
Adams of that place was gr.-gr. -grandson of William junior. I
have lately made investigations which show that the statement of
Dr. Woodward and the supposition of Mr. Kidder are both wrong.
To this I have only to add that fuller researches show
that the family is in fact a large one.

1. I. The first certain knowledge we have of William Adams
is  as  a  commoner  of  Ipswich,  where  he  is  found  31  January,  1642  ;
but he was very probably made Freeman of Mass. 22 May, 1639.
He was a Selectman 1646, and died in 1661 ; his widow was living
in 1681. He probably lived in or near what is now Hamilton.

William Price of (iilmanton, N. II.

Undoubtedly of this family was Eltphalet Adams of Ipswich,
whom I am not able to identity, but who married in 1730, Anna
Morse of Newbury. Children, born at Ipswich:

i. Sarah, b. in 1 732.

ii. Anna. b. in 1 733-4.
iii. Moses, b. in 1 735.
iv. Aaron, b. in 1738.

William Adams (1. I.) left a will, of which there is no trace,
except that it was proved at Ipswich Court 25 March, 1(562. In
L668, Nathaniel and Samuel Adams executed articles of agreement
concerning the estate of their father William, in which reference is
made to the will, to their mother as living, to their brother John
and Bisters.

William Adams (2. II.) died intestate, and administration was
granted by Ipswich Court to his father and brother John ; on the
father's death, Nathaniel the brother was put in his place. It was
stated that the deceased left eldest son William, and two other chil-
dren. 29 March, 1G92, Lieut. John Adams, aged 60 and upwards,
made a deposition, in which he named his father William, and his
brother William, who left three sons, William, Simon and John.

John Adams (,'!. II.), Simon (7. III.) and Daniel his son, John
(8. III.) and Hannah his widow, Thomas (10. III.), Samuel
(11. III.), John (13. IV.), Thomas (16. IV.) and Thomas
(21. V.), all left wills recorded at Salem, where is also found the
settlement by division of estate of Nathaniel (9. III.).
