The Right Honorable Hamilton R. Gamble
Governor of the State of Missouri
Sate
We the undersigned members of company 4 of Col. Fenns regiment of the state
militia now encamped at Manchester MO, do most respectfully and earnestly
petition your excellency to permit us to go to our nomes and attend to our
ordinary business meeting three or Tour times a week Tor tne purpose3 of drill,
ready and pails to GO wnen cur services are needed and we are cailed upon Dy
the state. Wwe make this petition for the foiiowing reasons. Tne greater portion
of our company are gechanace r farmers, who have jand rented for which we will
not be able to pay. since now that it is time to put in our crops our farms ars
going to waste for tne want of our labor. neither v ud we be able to pay the taxd
for wnich our country calis on us that the rebellion may be put down. Now sir
e have been quartered here in Manchester To°R one month anc as Tar as we can
see have done our couniry no good while on tne other hand we experience
considerable loss by it and we think that until we are called inte active
service, we could tend to our ordinary business and keep curselves just as well
e t
posted in mil
ary icS aS W co here. And we would further state that there
is here no provision made for us in case any Of us are sick, there being no
eae surgeon, or any medicines in cur camp and that our wives and children
are helpless at home by themselves, and must soon come to destitution for the
want of our care and as long as we are doing our country no good we are not at
ali willing that this should be the case For these reasons we earnestly
petition your excellency and sign ourselves. Respectfully
