A New Face
for an Old Friend

The past year has been a year of changes and im-
provements on the Hilltop. 'Southern now boasts an ex-
cellent new fitness center and the Norton Campus Cen-
ter, two beautiful buildings housing different services for
students. Also new to campus is the Southern Environ-
mental Museum which attracted more than its share of
children and adults in its first year. Plans have also been
unveiled for a new fraternity row, a renovated science
building and humanities center, and what promises to
be a breath-taking landmark, the bell tower. All of these
new buildings, as well as a massive beautification pro-
gram, have made 'Southern an attractive place to live
and learn. Of course, the same friendly faces and inter-
esting classes exist. 1 999 has certainly been a year to

bQ proud to be ^Southern.

From partying on
Thursday nights to
hanging out by the
fountain, the best
times at 'Southern
usually involve
making friends. These
great memories really
make you proud to
be 'Southern.

Student Life 5

Striplin also has plenty of
dumbbells to lift.

When hot summer weather
pushes students indoors, the
treadmills provide a great
place to run or walk.

6 Southern Accent

Amanda Burkett cheerfully welcomes students to Striplin. An
attendant is always at the front desk to help students out with
equipment.

Proud to be Fit

New Striplin Fitness Center
replaces Old Gym as the place
for getting in shape

Students at 'Southern definitely empha-
size physical fitness. By early afternoon
each day, the 'Southern uniform changes
from Polos and khakis to Umbros and tee-
shirts as many people exercise to relieve
stress. Now exercising is easier than ever
with the beautiful new Striplin Fitness
Center, featuring basketball, racquetball,
aerobics, a pool, and the latest weight
circuits and cardiovascular equipment. Or,
if your workout is watching television, at
least Striplin is a really pretty building to
show all your friends!

The basketball courts let everyone
from BSC players to novices play a
pickup game or just work on their
jump shot.

Free weights are an-
other good way to
build muscle and im-
press onlookers.

Student Life 7

Proud to be Secure

Sly Dog Sylvester teaches a few
old tricks to the new officer.

When you're
broken down
late at night,

security is
your best

friend, but

those little
yellow tickets

might have
you singing a
different song

Campus security per-
forms many services for
students. Always on
duty, the officers work
non-stop to keep this
campus safe from
crime, and also to check
fire alarms, to give di-
rections, and to give
students rides when
needed. Remember all
that next time a ticket
has you cursing them!

Students are always wel-
come at the "Security
Shack" even if it is just to
whine pitiful excuses
about why one simply
had to be parked in the
Goodwin loading zone
for three days.

while yelling, "That way, Cliief around campus on the trusty

A security officer checks in with a visitor.
Security checks in all visitors and gives them
directions if needed.

Student Life 9

With the help of student volunteers, the
Center helped create what has become a
nationally recognized recycling program.

Proud to Conserve

Far from simple recycling,

envirojimental awareness at

'Southern has reached new levels

Led by Roald Hazelhoff, environmental aware-
ness at 'Southern is at a high level. The recycling
system prevents trash from being wasted, and
the Ecoscape and Southern Environmental Cen-
ter illustrate how to take care of the earth. The
new environmental studies minor further shows
that the College has not forgotten Mother Earth.

The new 'Southern Environmen-
tal Center entrance features an
interactive sculpture designed by
Professor Steve Cole.

tive museum.

Working in partnership with
'Southern's Energy Commit-
tee, the SEC organized solar
car races on campus and
helped make the Hilltop a bi-
cycle-friendly campus.

Filled with fragrant flower beds and beneficial bug sculptures,
the Ecoscape also features a classroom pavillion designed so
professors can hold class among the gardens.

Student Life 1 1

Meals always last longer in
Norton; no one wants to leave
friends to go study.

Students check out with popular cashier Rob Sway makes

Johnnie Whatley. Seeing the cat workers his selection

every day makes it easy to be friends with from Pasta Con

the men and women who feed the campus. Amore.

12 Southern Accent

The nice new tables and chairs make it easy
to choose chatting with friends, being a
"Caf Potato," over going to class.

Proud to Chow Down

Gone are the days and
nights of pondering.
Traditions or Trends.
With Norton came
many tasty picks for
meals including bur-
gers, deli sandwiches,
smoothies, pizza, pasta,
and the old favorites
like country fried steak.
For the hungry, there's
bound to be something
good.

The new Norton
Student Center
eclipses the old Caf
in selection and
availability of food

Grab-and-go foods are a
big part of the new Caf.
Baskets with everything
from cereal to candy bars
line the area by the cash
registers, a convenience
appreciated by those
wanting snack foods for
later.

Student Life 13

Comfortable couches and big screen televisions
make the upstairs lounges a good destination for
breaks between class.

Plenty of tables on the second
floor make a terrific place to
study in groups or alone.

Convenient

New Norton offers new resources
and updates old ones

The new Norton offers many services for stu-
dents. From lounges with cable television to
offices for Student Affairs and other depart-
ments, Norton has pretty much everything stu-
dents need.

Forget a birthday? No problem!
The new bookstore sells cards
and gifts, all of which can be
purchased with a student card.

April Barber checks her
mail at the sharp new Post
Office.

Student Life 15

Proud to Study Hard

If your attention span is not your strong
suit, take advantage of an individual
study area for privacy and quiet.

Though some

people only use

the library to

check email or

rent videos, there

are actually quite

a few resources

at your disposal

The library has plenty of
big tables where students
can set up camp for long
study sessions.

The recently-renovated
library is hopping dur-
ing exam tinie and busy
throughout the year.
Sure, there are videos
for rent, but one can
also use the internet, the
language lab, the lec-
ture room, or any of the
many private study
rooms. Oh, and there's
lots of books, too.

16 Southern Accent

These students show blatant disregard for the incredibly impor-
tant "no drink" policy that some workers so dihgently enforce. It's
amazing that these girls each had a drink among the books and the
library is still standing today.

Proud to Create

The Art Building never sleeps,

as students are always

working on their masterpiece

The Art Building is one place where one can
always find students. Art students do most of
their homework in the studios, so it's common to
see several painters working at midnight or pho-
tographers taking a break from the darkroom.
These late nights develop friendships, relation-
ships based on the common bond of trying to
crank out six drawings before your 9am critique.

Senior Sculpture major Chris Forgey gives Jordan
Segrest advice on tier painting. This cooperative spirit
unites many student artists.

The Art Gallery brings exhibits
from off-campus and shows works
of students and faculty

The Art Gallery is a great place to check out new
art in forms ranging from sculpture to photogra-
phy. It features several exhibits from off-cam-
pus artists as well as faculty exhibitions. Also
popular are the Senior BFA Exhibit, featuring
works of graduating seniors, and the Juried
Student Art Show, a competitive exhibit with
awards.

Sculptures such as the ones shown here are often fun, whim-
sical pieces of art designed to trigger one's imagination.

worthwhile. From late-
night studying to en-

meetings, living in the
dorms is an invaluable
experinece.

Studying in bed is comfortable
if you can only avoid falling
asleep.

Dorm rooms also have desks so
students can do homework
wihtout going to the library.

SoCo '99 brings the campus to-
gether for a weekend of carnival
games and hand parties

Southern Comfort weekend is often the most
anticipated weekend of the year by all students.
SoCo '99 kicked off with a band party on the
Quad featuring student and professional bands,
and Saturday was the carnival at which students
ate crawfish and played games.

As one of the oldest fraternities at BSC, Alpha Tau

areas of campus life, ranging from philanthropies and

intramural sports to various student organizations, ATO

stands out as the most unique fraternity. This uniqueness

results from the individuality within our fraternity. One of

the defining characteristics of an ATO is the readiness to

have a good time. During the fall, ATO has imaginative

themes for many mixers, as well as Viking, a 31 -year old

tradition that was started by this chapter and has

spread nationwide. Over the past years ATO's have

epitomized diversity, loyalty, and friendship. We take

Editor's Note

When I was chosen to be yearbook editor, I had no idea how much work was involved. My naivety produced quite a
few headaches; we could not, as I thought, turn out the entire book in only a few months. But we worked through all
the problems, and worked diligently to capture your memories through photography and text. I hope you enjoy the
1999 Southern Accent.
