Union College is a United Methodist institution, charged with
helping its students embrace six core values. Key among
these is spiritual quest:
an jt
Ecumentical and Interfaith Forum: Every
semester a panel of religious leaders and
area faculty members examine a topic (like
war or immigration) and answer questions.
This was the Ethics and j
Spirituality Forum on the
Environment (right),
where panelists included
Andy Messer and Dr. 'r-
Sisson.
We espouse the spiritual
quest. We challenge
each other to discover,
intellectually articulate
and claim a life-affirming l
spiritual faith and/or
philosophy of life.
David Miller (above, left) is the Campus
Minister of Union College. He leads the
college in prayer throughout the year at
special services and many sports events.
Through a variety of initiatives he also
helps and sponsors groups and individual
students setting out on their spiritual

Since 2004 the Humanities
Interfaith Trips, in cooperation
with -Prof. Jon Cooley, have
taken hundreds of students to
Louisville, Lexington,
Knoxville and Atlanta to see
first-hand Hindu, Jewish,
Muslim, and Greek Orthodox
Christian worship practices.
This year's Staley Lectures featured
guest author, church cantor and
musician Dr. Jacqueline Comito.
Rev. Miller also brings
Christian rock bands to our
i college., His spiritually
literate movie series puts on
films that generated great
interest and sometimes
controversy.
Spiritual Life also co-sponsors all the Alternative Fall and Spring
Break trips. These allow Union students, staff and faculty to
travel to places as far away as Washington, D.C., (right) New
Orleans (see page 119) or New Jersey to do service work and see
first hand the different problems faced in other parts of America.

Student Ambassadors make Union a happy place.
The Ambassadors give tours to prospective
students and families to show a student
perspective of Union. Their biggest job is summer
Orientations, which are fun filled days where
incoming freshman and their families can get their
classes scheduled, meet other students and have
any last minute questions answered. The Student
Ambassadors are a wonderful group of students
who love Union and want others to enjoy it as w>
Jessica
and Karla.
Our Zeta Chi cast is part of APO, the national fraternity
which promotes educational theatre. Here at Union we
are very fortunate to have Dr. Rebecca Pettys and
students who are dedicated to bringing drama, tragedy
and comedy to our campus.
Students qualify by earning enough
acting and / or technical hours in our
productions. This year five new members
were presented their sweatshirts by
senior APO member Michael Miles.

Women's Soccer 2007 Recap
Am
The 2007 season brought a lot of optimism to the Lady Bulldog soccer team. The
Lady Bulldogs only lost one senior from the previous season, and added a
freshman recruiting class that consisted of five solid players from all over the
country. The Lady Bulldogs also had a couple of former players rejoin the squad
help give it some depth. All in all, things looked good for the Lady Bulldogs.
After dealing with a slew of preseason injuries and heat illness issues, the
team hit a nice stride early in the season and scored a big conference win
over Tennessee Wesleyan, 1-0. The ladies used that momentum to go on
win three of the next four matches, including wins over conference foes
Bluefield College and Bryan College.
After traveling to Montreat and coming home the victor in PKs, the Lady
Bulldogs made another appearance in the AAC conference semi-finals. The
team played a great match, but fell to eventual conference and region
champions, King College 2-0.
This season's seniors, Amanda Weber and Karin Moore, were looking to
improve on the 6-13 record from the season before. Under their leadership,
the team finished the regular season with a 7-7-1 record and 3-3-1 record in
the conference, good enough for a fifth place finish. The total record for the
season was 7-8-2, finishing with one more win than the previous season and
jumping two spots in the conference.
With recruiting in full swing, this is a very important spring for the Lady Bulldogs.
They have been working hard in the weight room, in the swimming pool, and on
the training pitch. They are competing in tournaments this spring at The
University of the Cumberlands and NCAA Division II power Carson-Newman
College. This all to help prepare them for the upcoming season, a season where
they vow to finish higher in the conference, and to add to the success that was
started this season.

I spent my four years
here at Union playing
soccer and enjoyed
every bit of it. The team
was more like a family
to me and I'm going to
miss them all. Karin
and I, being the only
seniors, have been able
to see the women's
program grow and can
only hope that it gets
better. I wouldn't trade
my years at Union for
anything. Being able to
play soccer in college
as a huge
enlevement and I'm
ally grateful for this
whole experience. I'm a
sports management
major with a minor in
marketing. I plan on
^1 coming back to Union
for another semester to
finish classes and be
the student assistant for
the soccer team. It will
be a different
experience being on
\ the other side of things
'but I hope to help out
as much as I can.
When I'm done here I
plan on trying out for a
few soccer teams either
here or back in
Canada. Also, I hope to
be a sports promoter
for a professional team
here in the States.
I have truly
enjoyed my four
years at Union
College.
I have
developed the
greatest
friendships and
have had the
best
experiences of
my life.
Being a part of
the women's
soccer team has
been so much
fun, I have so
many wonderful
memories.
After graduation
I plan to
continue my
education in
nutrition and
have a career
as a nutritionist.

consisting of Joey Waters, Patrick O'Neal and Shawn Kelly did Just that. Waters now owns or share
eleven program records including single season records for completions, attempts, yards and
touchdowns. O'Neal broke the single season record for tackles and tied the record for single game
tackles twice. Kelly etched his name on the All time Receptions list coming in second and also broke -Hi

USA CYCLING
NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
This past year for the Union College Cycling
Team has been as spectacular as the
history of the bike itself. Just as the history
of the machine has gone from the walking
machine in 1817 to the state-of-the-art
aerodynamic cycles of today, the Cycling
Team has developed into a fine tuned
machine over the course of the 2007
season. The diversity in the group is a
i testament to the determination of the team.
The 2007 Cycling Team has traveled great distances and covered many more miles on their bikes
to earn the title of 4th in the nation at the NCCA Division II Championship (NATIONALS) in
Banner Elk, North Carolina. The riders that represented Union at Nationals were (pictured top left)
Amy Russell, Karen Caldwell, Jamie Bonza, (top right) Zac Moore, Gregg Gibson. Jonathan
Turner, and Zach Winn. Other honors that have been given to individuals are: MidWest Collegiate
Cycling Conference Rider of the Year to Zach Winn and NCCA Ail-American to Gregg Gibson.

This year our
cheerleading jumped
quite a few hurdles.
After losing their coach
during pre-season,

from scratch with the
team. With her hard
work, and the teams'
dedication, the
cheerleaders went all
the way to nationals.
This was the first time

'i0 The 2007-2008 basketball season was a good season considering all the injuries
we went through. We were able to win 1 9 games this year and advanced to the
second round of the conference tourney. It was a real challenge to keep up with
who was healthy enough to play this year. We had 7 of our top players out with
injuries for most of the season and were without the services of Senior Ryne Bretz
for all but the first 4 games and Sophomore Brett Miller had to miss the entire
season. The other guys had various injuries throughout the year.
Chris Stunson and Kevin Jones were our two Seniors with Brian Kirk graduating this
year even though he has one more year of eligibility left. These guys did a good job
leading the team this year. They all battled through nagging injuries and full school
loads to have good senior seasons. v -
Sophomore Aaron Dunaway was our leading scorer while fellow sophomores
Anthony Coote, Kearney Demus and Nate Peyton provided good minutes and
energy bursts throughout the year. Freshmen Mike Hester, Josh Hurd, James
Johnson and Bill Davis all also gave valuable contributions to this year.
We hate to lose the three who are graduating but we are looking forward to next
year with as many young players as we had. I really think the young guys gained
some valuable experience and they are just going to get better. Recruiting is going
well right now and I think that next year we have a chance to really improve.

been a great experience.
basketball experience has enabled me to develop some great
relationships. Through the good times and bad, Union basketball has
made me a better person, father, and helped to prepare me to enter the
real world. Coach Combs has always been a great coach, person, and
most importantly a caring friend and mentor.
Next year I plan to become a high school math teacher and possibly a
basketball coach. I am really looking forward to having a chance to help
adolescents develop into prepared college students. As far as where I
am going, my plans are not yet set.

swim season proved to
be a good one for us.
Our swimmers were
able to obtain
improvements across
the board. We have
doubled the number of
qualified swims at
nationals, both
individually and on

our swims improved.
Several team records

have many reasons to
be pleased, which
encourage and
motivate us to have an

With plans to defend their Appalachian Athletic Conference (ACC) Title the
Union College Woman's Softball team welcomed help from freshmen Sherry
DeVault and Ashley Tatman. DeVault, a graduate of Fisher Catholic High
School, hosted a 3.67 earned run average (ERA) with 97 strikeouts. The
Baltimore, Ohio native received praise with the Pitcher of the Week nod, on April
21 , 2008 for both AAC conference and Region XII. Ashley Tatman brought pop
to the Lady Bulldog line up. The freshman from Lexington, KY led the team in
hits with 60, homeruns with 4, and played in 56 games, more than any other
Bulldog. Sarah Driver returns to the pitching circle with AAC and Region XII
Pitcher of the Year awards under her belt, and held a 1.95 ERA with195
strikeouts. Driver led the Bulldogs in batting average with a .358 average. She
also led the team in doubles with 17, and walks with 14. Hopkinsville, KY is
home to Driver and teammates, Bethany Outland, Ryan Travis and Lyla Blauser. Ryan Travis, a sophomore,
held down first base and recorded a fielding percentage of .982, the second highest on the team. Bethany
Outland caught for the Bulldogs and fielded an outstanding .991 . In addition Mallory Lavoy (Temperance, Ml),
Andrea Green (Fankfort, KY), and Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, AZ) all completed all ACC games without
completing a single error. Behnken also hit the programs first ever Grand Slam, which helped her tie the
record for most runs batted in (RBI) in a game with 5. Lee Davis, a returning sophomore hit an even .300 at
the plate and led the Bulldogs in Runs Batted In with 33. The foundation of the team was senior, Lyla Blauser
who hit .369 and completed a 10 game hitting streak. Blauser has solidified her name in the Union College
record book. She holds 12 Union College records and three NAIA records for stolen bases and hit by pitches.
Union had a season high of an eight game winning streak. In the post season Union finished second in the
AAC losing the championship game to Milligan College (TN). Union advanced to the Region XII tournament
and finished one game away from the regional championship game. Ashley Tatman and Sarah Driver lead
the Bulldogs to a 10-6 AAC record and were awarded with All Conference First Team and All Region First
Team honors. Union finished 24-29 overall.

This year has been another eye opener... Seeing the girls pulling
to Regionals again! All teams have up and downs including
ours. One of the most team effort is seeing the girls come
together as one as a team. This has shown me the graditude
and self-esteem to award them great. I am looking forward for
the same next year but more endurance to come. Hopefully we
will reach the top! Go Bulldogs!

The Union College Baseball team had a season to remember. After
finishing 13-5 in Appalachian Athletic Conference, they received a
bid to the Region XII tournament in Kingsport, TN. The Bulldogs flew
through their Region XII tournament dropping only one game to
University of Virginia, at Wise. This marked the second Region XII
Championship for Union. Coach Bart Osborne took his team on the
road to Lebanon, TN to play the baseball powerhouse, Cumberland
University. Union came out victorious with Marty Popham and Lance
Dougherty on the mound. The Bulldogs won their first ever South
Central Super Regional Championship, in their second consecutive
Super Regional appearance. As the team headed to Lewiston, Idaho
for the NAIA World Series, they received the number five seed in the
tournament. Union beat first round match-up, Asuza Pacific and
moved on to play top seeded Lee University. After dropping games
to both Lee University and Spring Arbor the Bulldogs were sent
home, but not without making a name for themselves in NAIA
baseball. Union's offense soared as they scored a total of 24 runs in
three games, and finished fifth in the tournament. Joe Grinstead led
the team offensively with a .433 batting average this season.
Grinstead broke the record for single season runs scored with 78; he
also holds the record for single season stolen bases with 46. The
graduate of Warren East High in Bowling Green, KY also tied the
record for most games with 65; Joe is tied with teammates, David
Fairbanks, Justin Hart, Trey Wheeler, and Matt Brady. On the mound
for the Bulldogs was Marty Popham from Louisville, KY who has
ingraved his name in Union history by holding seven records.
Popham struck out 133 batters in the 2008 season and contributed
three shut out performances. Out of Popham's 18 starts he collected
the win in 17. The Bulldogs played a strong defense behind the
Union pitching staff with Hopkinsville, KY native Trey Wheeler
holding the single season record for put outs with 448. Sophomore
Kenny Kysar not only holds the record for most triples in a career, he
also reigns as the holder of most consecutive games with a hit with
21 . He holds both records as a junior. The Corbin, KY native finished
the season with a .327 average. The Union offense was centered on
senior, Justin Hart who held the clean up spot. Hart, who hails from
Lake Mary, FL broke the career record for doubles with 55, and then
followed up with a new career record for runs batted in (RBI) with
182. Following Hart in the line up was Josh Ehringer who led the
team in doubles this season with 21 . Ehringer also belted 12
homeruns, the most on the Bulldog roster. After the completion of the
NAIA World Series, Marty Popham was named NAIA All-American
1st Team. Both Josh Ehringer and Joe Grinstead were named NAIA
All-American Honorable Mention. Competed the season with a 48-18
record.

Upward Bound is a free federal initiative encouraging people to do well in school and
prepare for college. The Union College program began in 1980. High school students in
the 9th grade from seven local schools come for classes on some Saturdays, and are
aught by Union College students and staff. For six weeks of the summer Upward Bound
students live on campus during weekdays for classes and educational trips.

"During my trip to The Gambia in Africa, I
worked with the Gambia Red Cross (GRC) in
various locations. Most of our work however
was in the border areas of Cassamace, a region
between the borders of The Gambia and Senegal
where political unrest is very common. My trip
coincided with fighting between the Cassamace
rebels, Independence Fighters' and the
Senegalese army.
Buba's
African
friends called
him "the
American."
As a result, thousands of Cassamace refugees floated
into The Gambia and the GRC was responsible for
providing them with food, shelter and mosquito nets.
As a volunteer I was in charge of distributing all the
above among the refugees. It was a task that I
enjoyed and will forever be a part of me. I learned
how privileged we "Americans" are and, if anything,
the experiences have made me fall in love with the
United States of America." Buba Jallow

Funding came from Union and a Fulbright-

summer.

"I was impressed with the
happiness of the children of
Cameroon. Their motto for the
summer was: 'Build on a firm
foundation, never complete the

the work couldn't be completed
in one summer."
Travis Carmack
"I spent three months living in Uganda,
East Africa. I primarily worked at an
orphanage, but I also did a lot of
traveling. I saw the most beautiful birds
and the most beautiful people on Earth.
It was hard, having to see all of the
poverty and pain that came with living in
a third-world country. But it was even
harder knowing that at the end of three
months I could go home and
they would remain behind. This was
their home. Wars, malaria, AIDS;
these are facts of their lives. I was
there for only a short time, but every
child I held, every face I saw; they will
live in my memory forever. As the
Nile flows through the continent and
gives life to so many, they gave life to
me. I only hope that one day I can
return the favor."
"I have seen the heart of America. I stood on the hill where Custer
died. I touched the ruts cut into rock by the pioneers' wagon wheels.
I looked a buffalo in the eyes, from ten feet away.
Ruth, Maggie and I went on the MOOSE trip (Maryville Outdoor
Outreach Service Experience), an astonishing overland journey taking
in dozens of historical and natural wonders from Tennessee to
Wyoming.
We worked in National Parks, digging out trails for hikers, removing
roadside greenery that blocked the view and increased road kill rates,
and painting an entire building in a day. It was good, hard work.
I saw the Great Plains, heard wolves howling, and learned how America
became a continental nation. The spirit of our singing fellowship of nine
companions was unforgettable. To them, and the Bonner Foundation, I
say a big thank you." Stephen O'Donoghue

"I went on a Volunteers and Missions trip to
Pass Christian, a town on the Mississippi
coast. The group, from Danville United
Methodist Church, has taken on a ten year
project to go there to help repair the damage
from hurricane Katrina. They have been there
6 times. The first time I went I saw washing
machines in the sea.
This summer was my 2nd trip. We served for
one week, finishing clearing and cleaning a
house two blocks from the ocean so a couple
could move in, before starting on another
house.
The church we stayed in is now open for
normal use again, so next time we'll stay in tent
city. That was a camp for homeless residents
that volunteers now use."

Stephen O'Donoghue plus Stephen O'Donoghue.
jfeit Angie Armstrong
Over the summer Angie did her service at
Patch Work Therapeutic Riding Center in
Groton, New York. She worked 12 hours
a day, 7 days a week with physically and
mentally handicapped children and adults.
"This summer challenged me physically and
mentally. The work was hard and I grew to
love it. The horses taught me a lot about
life, and how to approach challenges. You
cannot force a horse to do anything. You
have to make then want to do it through
respect and love.
The people I came to know and love while
working there showed me how to love and
appreciate life, and I will be forever in their
debt."

On Monday, August 27, 2007, "The Lascivious
Biddies" were back at Union for the second time.
The Biddies' popularity drew a big crowd of
students and others to the Conway Boatman
Chapel. This year, having bought their albums at
the last concert, students could sing-a-long to
their favorite numbers.
The all-female cocktail pop quartet makes
headlines for an energetic show filled with humor,
expert musicianship, and angelic harmonies. The
foursome consists of Deidre Rodman on piano
and melodica, Lee Ann Westover as lead
vocalist, Lilly Maase on guitar, and Saskia Lane on
bass.

Homecoming has been an important part of
this college's traditions since the beginning,
in 1879. The celebration of this event is not
only for the students that are attending
Union now but it is to remember and to
reunite those many Bulldogs who have long
since graduated from these hallowed
grounds. For most, this time of year is the
only time they get to see and to be with the
friends they graduated with here from
Union. For others it is a great celebration to
see how the current year's football team is
doing. This year's gatherings were: 1961

We also offer a variety of workshop opportunities for
students on various topics such as study skills, test
taking, note taking, stress and time management which
take place over the course of the academic year. Our
Career Center also holds workshops such as: resume
writing, cover letter writing, interview techniques and
job search techniques. Each year we provide students
with the opportunity to attend graduate school tours to colleges and
universities that are in surrounding states and job/career fairs that are put on
by various organizations around the region. We also offer students three
cultural enrichment opportunities throughout the academic year. We take two
day trips during the fall semester and one three day trip during the spring

Jack Chesney and Charles Wykeham, two students about to graduate from
Oxford in 1894, want to invite Kitty Verdun and Amy Spettigue to lunch in order
to propose marriage. Victorian gentlemen needed to secure a chaperone before
they could invite young ladies to their dorm room. In this case, Jack and
Charley are counting on the arrival of Charley's aunt, a rich widow Charley has
never met. Kitty and Amy accept the luncheon invitation and the party is about
to start when word arrives that Charley's aunt is delayed. Panic attack!
Jack and Charley persuade Babbs, their fellow student, to pose as Charley's
aunt when he models a costume he has obtained for amateur theatricals in
which he will portray an old lady. Jack's father, who is having cash flow
problems, begins courting Charley's Aunt, as does Kitty's guardian, Mr.
Spettigue. When the real Charley's aunt arrives, the mischief multiplies to
hilarious proportions.

At this joyous time of year the faculty, staff and students
come together to celebrate the season through food and
fellowship. The 7th Annual Christmas Dinner was a huge
success. Set up as an evening to celebrate students, the
event continues to promote equality among all campus
groups. Since its inception Dr. Dan Covington has
organized the many faculty and staff needed for two full
seatings in the cafeteria.
It is an interesting evening as faculty see students and
their responses to being served by administration, faculty
and staff.
Pres. Ed de Rosset, athletic coaches, professors, safety,
student life, technology, library, business department,
admissions and administrative assestants across campus
came together to serve the students this special holiday
meal.

Described by Cornel West as an artist who speaks his truth with a power we desperately
need to hear. Bryonn Bain is Brooklyn's own spoken word champion and hip hop
poet. Wrongfully imprisoned during his second year at Harvard Law. Bain sued the
NYPD. was interviewed on 60 Minutes, and wrote the Village Voice cover story -
Walking While Black - which drew the largest response in the history of the nation's
most widely-read progressive newspaper. Bryonn currently hosts BET-Js current affairs
talk show My Two Cents airing weekly in 27 million homes worldwide.
At 18 years old. Bain produced Ntozake Shanges For Colored Girls Who Have
Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf at the world famous Apollo Theater. Bain
created the hip hop/spoken word remake of the Broadway hit The Wiz What It Iz: The
Spoken Wordical which won rave reviews at Yale, Longwharf and American Place
theaters. Other credits range from a South African freedom fighter in My Children. My
Africa, to independent films such as Hunting in America (Roxbury Film Festival winner)
and Filmic Achievement (Nolita Film Festival winner). Bain recently played a cult leader in
Pig Hunt directed by Academy Award winner Jim Isaac (Gremlins, The Fly, Star Wars)
and slated for release in 2008. Beginning in December, look for Bain as the lead in the
Off Broadway comedy From Auction Block to Hip Hop at the Florence Gould Theater
(produced by the creators of the NYC Platanos and Collard Greens).
A Nuyorican Grand Slam Poetry Champion, Bryonn has performed at over 100 U.S.
colleges and universities, as well as in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe.
Featured in the documentary Urban Scribe, his acclaimed debut album Problem Child
^^ laced by the producers of artists ranging from Jay Z to Dead Prez fuses hip hop and
spoken word with reggae and other world music. The grassroots organization Bryonn
founded in 1997, Blackout Arts Collective, has organized workshops and
performances reaching prisons and public schools in twenty-five states, and works
regularly with teenagers incarcerated at Rikers Island prison.
Having taught hip hop and spoken word at NYU and Columbia, this fall Bain follows
the footsteps of legendary Black Arts pioneer Sekou Sundiata as Poet-in-Residence at
the New School University.

Nearly three years after Hurricane Katrina flooded most of New Orleans, a two-van team of staff and students from
Union volunteered their time during Spring Break to help in the relief effort We worked in St Bernard's Parish, which
once held 67,000 people of whom only 25,000 have returned. We stayed at Camp Hope , an abandoned middle school
which hosts hundereds of volunteers on a daily basis (see above, far left) The people of New Orleans told us personally.
"where levels of government and insurance companies have failed us, church groups and volunteers have kept coming
and have fixed 3.000 houses so far." During the course of the week we worked on 4 projects The first assignment was at
a recycling depot which cleans and sells refurbished materials from houses and the surrounding community back to
those who wish to restart their lives in New Orleans Next we took part in the Ka-tree-na Project planting donated trees
for the improvement of one of the many neighborhoods. The following day we visited a retirement home which is now
i — ..-j
in an abandoned hospital. The residents told us their stories of this great tragedy. On
the last day of the trip Unioa along with other groups from around the country,
went to what use to be the original retirment home, which had been under water for
a month after the hurricane, to begin ripping down ceilings and gutting interior
walls of that building. Funding for this trip was provided by the Common Partners
Program, the Spiritual Life, and Student Government Our volunteeres were: Kristin
Smith, David Miller, Angje Armstrong. Ashley Browa Travis Carmack,
Jeanne Davis Josh Hampton, Jonathan Kinsey. Maggie Mayes Stewart
Miller, Paula Mosley. Stephen ODonoghue, Christopher Osborne. Elise
Ratterman, Andre Thomtoa and Autumn Willoughby.

Each year for spring break
people travel far and wide.
Whether it is to go to new and
exotic places, or simply to go
back home to visit their family;
our students feel the need to
travel. This year people went
all over. Friends went to the
beach together. Teams went to
competition together. Others
went to see great natural
beauties. Some contributed
their time and efforts to help
rebuild homes for the needy.
From as far North as Canada, to
Key West, Florida the students
from Union had plenty of
adventures to remember.

WORLD IS MY CLASSROOM
UNION STUDENTS STUDY ABROAD
\ I
Hello from
Bregenz, Austria!
Studying here for the past few
weeks has opened my eyes
to many unintentional as-
i sumptions I had in regards
k to European lifestyle. Its
\ much more relaxed, and
everyone walks or rides a
bike. The food is also
much healthier than in
the states. For a while it
I seemed as though I was
I still in America just sur-
% rounded by foreign
tourists. I can't li«
re has been some cultu.
shock, as well as a slight withdrawal froi
some American commodities. Still, this experience has
had a great effect on my view of the world outside of the United
States. I would highly encourage anyone considering traveling abroad to do so.
\ •■■''$>k
FROM SUNNY SEVILLE!
My second journey out of the U.S. took me to hot
and sunny Seville located in southern Spain. I
was lucky enough to spend two weeks in the
ty with Professor Zwack. Since I was in the
ame city for two weeks, I had a great opportu-
nity to experience foreign culture. During my
time I became familiar not just with Seville,
but with the different neighborhoods of
Seville and the amazing people who live,
work, and play there. I believe travel is im-
portant because it is a relaxing experience.
However, I think the real experience is in
the culture that you can discover while
traveling.

There was a lot of love in the air at both Spring Concerts.
Tears even flowed at the Valentine concert for the old
songs including "My Girl," "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree,"
"Stop in the Name of Love," and "Mr. Sandman."
For the Spring Concert, UC Singers and Union Harmony
music selections focused on "Worshipping our risen King."
Selections such as; "Ride Up in the Chariot" and "O For a
Thousand Tongues to Sing," brought the feelings of Spring
and Easter together.

and make a difference.
To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

disconcerting. You think it's hard spending 9 months here, try

I pretty much knew I would go to Union, partially
because of my brother Rion, and just a gut

It's pretty nice. My favorite professor is

"I transferred from UK to Union in the Fall of 2007 and
changed my major from pre-pharmacy to Accounting. I landed an
accounting internship at Jackson MSC, an industrial dishwasher
manufacturing company, at the end of the fall semester. I worked there
part-time during the spring semester and full-time this summer (2006).
I managed to take 13 hours of classes both semesters, participate in an
internship, have a bit of a social life and still earned my spot on the Dean's^,^^
List. I am very proud of that. Besides working hard at school and my ^Hl
career, I enjoy hanging out with friends and being outdoors. My plans
upon graduation are to move south because I hate cold weather and love
being near the coast. I spent Spring Break this past year in Sarasota, FL

He is also one of the founders for Campus Crusade for Christ (UC Chapter) and

Union College Alumni are also eligible to take
advantage of several beneficial programs that can
have a positive impact on the college while helping
you at the same time. These Affinity Programs are
designed to help alums save money, while also
ensuring that Union receives a benefit as well.
Alumnus Tom Faxon 70 shares his Union
experience with students.
Money from the Phonathon is generally applied to the
Union Fund, which helps to defray the actual cost of a
Union College education and the amount a student
has to pay. By increasing support for the Union Fund,
we are decreasing the amount that Union students
have to pay for a quality, private education.
The annual Phonathon, conducted in the
spring, is just one way Union College Alumni
can support Union, even as their terms as
students have ended. By pledging to give any
amount to Union, even $1 , you are helping to
raise the overall contribution level. This makes
Union more marketable when trying to secure
donations from large foundations.
Friends Rachel Jumbelick and Amy Deininger

Graduating doesn't mean saying goodbye to
Union! In fact, it's just the beginning of a new,
special relationship that will stay with you no
matter where you go. As a Union College
alumnus, you're always a part of the family

Four years ago, I would have never believed that I would have the opportunity to be
standing in front of you today. I never imagined this insecure, quiet freshman would
ever develop into an assured, poised Senior, who would have such a great privilege.
So let me begin by acknowledging and thanking the entire Union College faculty and
staff, my classmates, friends, and fellow graduates, as well as everyone in
attendance today for joining in this celebration of our success. This opportunity to
address all of you is extremely humbling, yet also very thrilling because today is the
culmination of a goal completed. All of us came to Union immersed in an ocean of
ambitions so diverse from each other, but with one common purpose; to be right
here. . . to get to this point. . . to graduate.
ed who I was, I most certainly responded, I'm a basketball
player. However, now I realize that response did not correctly answer the question,
did not state who I was, I simply stated what I did. Truthfully, back then, I did not
know who I was. There was a heap of feelings running through me, and no possible
way of organizing my scariest thoughts: Thoughts of the future. Well not much has
changed. The future is still a very frightening idea, but I no longer fear it; none of us
should. Throughout our time spent at Union, we have all been tested, tried, pushed,
and challenged. At times we succeeded, and sometimes we failed. Sometimes we
made right decisions, but there were other times when we did not. Blatantly put, we
have all lived and we have all learned. Our lessons may have been on the court, on
the field, in the classroom, in the workplace, or even in our own home.
Nevertheless, these varied life lessons, though so unique to each individual, have
driven us a little further along our path of self-discovery.
To get this far, we tossed aside the idea of fate and took action to create our own
destinies. However, the path does not end here. In fact, life is only beginning. Very
soon we will all be given the chance to achieve greatness, and there is no doubt in
my mind that all of you have this potential.
But that's the funny thing. . . What is greatness?. . . Who can put Greatness into words?
We all aspire to be great, but it is hard to define, and even harder to achieve. So on
our graduation day, where do we go from here? What type of greatness do you dare
to desire?
To a doctor, greatness might mean developing a cure for cancer. To an athlete,
greatness might mean throwing a touchdown pass to win the Super Bowl. To a
musician, greatness might be winning a Grammy. To an educator, greatness might
be tutoring students after school hours. To most of us, however, including myself,
greatness is right now. I do not believe greatness is the result of any single
individual; greatness is built on a foundation cemented with relationships and
experiences. Not simply relationships with family and faculty, but with each other.
The only reason we have the potential to be great is because we have leaned on
each other through the good times and the bad. We are all connected through our
memories and experiences at Union, and I hope that all of you treasure and use
these to comfort you in the years ahead. So get out there and do not be afraid to
achieve greatness, whatever it may mean to you.
A congratulations is in order not only to us graduates for achieving excellence in
academics, athletics, and the arts, but also congratulations to our faculty and staff,
friends and family. Our success is your success, for you have given us the
opportunity and courage to excel, and the faith that we can indeed be great!

"Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes, How Do
You Measure - Measure A Year? In Daylights - In Sunsets, In Midnights
- In Cups Of Coffee, In Inches - In Miles, In Laughter - In Strife."
As a yearbook staff member I use pictures to show you what happened
throughout the year. This year was my second year at Union, and so far
each year just keeps getting better! I'm glad I got a chance to take part
in such a memorable experience by working on this yearbook.
The pages I worked on consisted of: Bulldog Madness, Cheerleading,
Freshmen Move-In, Co-curricular Awards and Spring Break.

A wise man once said.. "No man can know exactly where he is going until he
knows exactly where he has been and exactly how he arrived at his present
place." Although I may not know where I am going the memories of this
arbook will allow me to see exactly where I have been and exactly where I
am now. Being able to contribute to the yearbook has been a pleasure. As a
Junior and a Bulldog Cheerleader, I take great pride in the memories Union
has given me and I am pleased to have been able to help create a great
' ce to store all those memories. My contribution to this year's yearbook
the Bulldog Football, Welcome Weekend, and SGA Tailgate pages. (

knew that I wanted to create a collage that showcased the hundreds of people and
events that could be found on the pages within. And I wanted it to be something that
people would take the time to look at in depth, a piece of photographic art that was
detailed and interesting. The pictures were taken by numerous students, faculty, and
staff. Had it not been for their unflinching loyalty to Union and their steadfast
dedication to documenting our events, there would be no cover. I thank all the
photographers who provided me with material, I thank the yearbook staff for their
excellent work, and I thank Dr. Marley for the opportunity and support.
Angie was the artist who designed our STESPEAN cover this year.
iuzannah Behnken and Brooks Napier, while not members of the

the last pages completed during the summer. Brooks did the golf pages
and Suzannah wrote the text for both softball and baseball. Thanks for
helping.

Another year has passed and many more memories have been
made. I have to say that I am glad that the yearbook has made a
comeback and that I will have lasting memories of my college career,
this being my final year as an undergraduate. I leave knowing that I
have made many great friends which will be missed. I leave this
college with a Bachelors in History, Secondary Education, Business
Administration, and emphasis in the Social Studies Area. Some of the
activities that I have taken part in are holding the position of

pictures and bright colors onto a page. You have to be creative
and imaginative, because sometimes your resources are limited.
There were a few times when I couldn't find the right type of shot of
someone and many times when there were no colors to work with
a certain background. Being the artistic person I am, I worked my
way around those problems. I've searched for so many
high enough to fit one portion of the page, so it couldn t be used.
I've learned doing this, which isn't easy in each limited time frame.
Aside from a few difficulties, I enjoyed working on the yearbook
and I hope you will enjoy the work from myself as well as the entire
yearbook staff.

As an incoming freshman, I never knew how much Union College had
to offer. One of those many offers was working with the yearbook. I
really enjoyed working with the yearbook staff, even though I didn't
have it as a class. I did all my work in my free time. I want to thank
Stephen, Lee Ann, Chris, and all the yearbook staff. If it wasn't for
them, I wouldn't be able to have such great pictures to display on my
pages. This helped me create many memories here at Union College.
Some of the pages I have done throughout the year were Upward
Bound, Summer of Service, & Common Partners. I have taken
countless pictures throughout my year here at Union College and I
hope to continue this for the remainder of my college career.

Why are you holding this yearbook now?
From 1999 to 2004 nobody made one - those
are seven lost years of Union College's
history. It was Dr. Christine Marley-Frederick
who stepped up and volunteered, without
pay, to bring the Stespean back. She does
get paid now, but it is still remarkable that
she works far into her summertime to polish
and perfect the book you are looking at now.
