The accompanying charts of the first four genera tliqintf ■''
of the descendants of Richard and Abigail Stock ton '^have been ifa^o'-
fully CO Bipi led from the public and private records of very many
places and person 8 and while the utmost care has been- taken and
the result is believed to be correct yet it is \ma voidable perhaps
that some errors should have crept in or that omissions should have
occurred and the compile?: will' be very grateful to a.ny one who will
point them out to him for cbrrebtion and addition in future editions .

Some differences from what has already been published on
the Stockton family will be noticed by the carpful reader i but there

con^jiler hopes fit. some future day to be able to present his work
with its proof iriibpok form for the judgment of those best cjialified
to decide the' auestionso The most iinportant change is in the
English ancestry of the emigrant; but for this there is testimony of
Jolm 56wne of Flushing, Long Island, a contemporary, who opposite
an accoimt with Richard Stockton has written the "note that "Richard
StoclftonU uncle Thomas, is a physician livlng*at Harbor,
London. " A search has been and is now being made in England to
establish this point , an4 'so f ar thQ results have established the
fact that t hare have been Stocktons there since 150p and that 15D
1620 John Stockton and Ann 'Grettam of. that placQ we^e married at
St. Ann's Blackfriars; London by special license, 'No record of
the children of this piarriage has ^een found, but' i^ is not im-
possible that Richard Stockton the emigrant was' such and a search
is now /1^!9ing made to establish.or disprove the hypothesise

"So far nothing has turned up. to militate against the
possession of the commonly accepted Stockton arms by the American
jranch of the family and there *are several reasons for believing
that the London and Cheshire Stocktons are the^^^.same branch and the
compiler has therefore felt justified in using the Arms as a Vignette
without thereby implying anything as to. the Americari branch's right
to 'the coat, . .'■ ' '■•■,■:■,:'•.■'.■./■■■'.•:■

It has been ijnpossible to quote the authority for each
statement in the ch^rte. separately, and a general list of authorities
i8» -therefore appended to this foreword, ' ■'
•^ V Jllias Boudinot Stockton

West Orange, N. Jo
Deoeiriber 7, 1909

These charts do not contain the reco^rds of any of the
so-called IVirginia' Stocktons" who are tha descendants of the Rev.
Jonas Stockton, a church of England clergyman who cam© out to Vir- ,
ginia and' took charge of the parishes of Elizabeth City and Bermuda
Kindred in 1634, The compiler i^ now at work on hii^ descendants
and hopes at some future day to publish the resultsp
