Dedication

An honored member of the Agri-
cultural Community, Fred Painter
Jeffrey was born in Trouger, Penn-
sylvania on February 19, 1911.
Married to M. Olive McKie since
June 26, 1937, they have three
children, Robert, Judith, and Roy.

He received his B.S. from Penn-
sylvania State College in 1932, and
his M.S. from Massachusetts State
College in 1934.

During his professional career,
Mr. Jeffrey has been employed by
Rutger's University as an instructor
to Associate Professor in Resident
Instruction and Research. He
joined the staff of the University
of Massachusetts in 1944 as head
of the Department of Poultry Hus-
bandry, and in 1955 he was ap-
pointed Director of the Stockbridge
School of Agriculture and Associate
Dean of the College of Agriculture.
He has, in the past, been acting
Dean of the Graduate School and
the College of Agriculture.

Mr. Jeffrey has been active in university affairs, serving on such committees as
the Graduate Council, Faculty Senate, University Scholarship Committee, and acting
as an advisor to a multiplicity of student groups.

He has professional and honorable memberships in several national honor societies,
science organizations, tnd the American Genetics Association.

Not only a dedicated member of his profession, Mr. Jeffrey is also active in com-
munity affairs. He has served as a member of the Amherst School Committee, Amherst
Community Chest, and a town meeting member.

He is the senior author of twenty-four scientific and technical publications. He is
also the co-author of a textbook in poultry production.

We have all enjoyed and benefitted tremendously from Dean Fred P. Jeffrey in
his capacities as the Director of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. He has unsel-
fishly given of his time for the advancement of the school and the well being of the
students. In this age of an impersonal society, Mr. Jeffrey can recall the names of stu-
dents from years past. He remembers them not as numbers, but as individuals. We of
the Stockbridge School wish him every success in the years to come. His patience and
guidance shall long be remembered.

For reasons so noted, we the students, hereby dedicate the 1971 edition of the
Stosag to our distinguished dean.

Introducing The
New Dean:
Dr. John W. Denisot

It is with great pleasure that we welcome our new Dean, Dr. John William Denison.

Dr. Denison was born in Harrison, Maine on April 20, 1927. Upon graduation
from Bridgton Academy he enlisted in the Navy as a radar technician. Following his
discharge, he attended the University of Maine where he got a B.S. in Poultry Science.

He then returned to the family farm in Maine and after a disastrous fire that
ruined the farm, he then held jobs as sailor, farm operator, wrestling coach, professional
wrestler, deputy sheriff and Boy Scout leader.

From 1952-1962 he was employed as a sales and service manager for Wirthmore
feeds and after earning a reputation of the highest calibre, was appointed first Regional
Poultry Specialist in 1961 through the University of Massachusetts. He then began
his graduate study which led to an M.S. in Agricultural and Food Economics in 1965.

Just recently, he has completed the requirements for an Ed. D. degree in Educa-
tional Administration. The title of the dissertation was, "A Study of the Predictive
Relationships Between Admission Criteria and Academic Achievement for the Stock-
bridge School of Agriculture."

Dr. Denison has been very active in academic organizations such as: Animal Sci-
ence Club advisor. University Calendar Coordinating Board, Placement and Financial
Aid in the Veterinary and Animal Science Departments, former advisor to STOSO,
a member of the Stockbridge Advisory Committee, among others. His professional
and honorary societies include Alpha Zeta, Poultry Science, and Phi Kappa Phi.

He has been an author and co-author of several publications including bulletins
on egg production, cage and floor plant sizes, Post-High School education in Poultry
Science, and several others.

He now resides at 35 Newell Court, Amherst, with his wife, the former Aune
Heino, and their two children, a son and a daughter, aged 12 and 15.

It is with sincere good wishes and the heartiest of congratulations that we extend
our greeting to the new Dean, and hope that all the goals that he has set out for him-
self and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture will soon be achieved.

This section of the yearbook is dedicated to those students who have participated
in extra-curricular activities which encompass both week day and weekend work.

Such dedicated students are those who participate on the Drill Team and the Inter-
collegiate Team. Amazingly enough, the University has allowed Stockbridge students
to take part in these activities. Such a students is Miss Judy Falabella of the class of 71.
Besides being an honor student, she has taken part in both the Drill and Intercollegiate
Teams, which takes up many hours after school and just about every weekend.

We, of the yearbook, felt that such dedication should not go unrewarded, therefore,
we honor those students who participate in activities which are above and beyond the
call of duty, such as those who participate in these equestrian organizations.

At first glance you will notice that this year's edition is smaller than the previous
editions. This is because the staff has worked on the premise that there should be
quality instead of quantity. This year, we are doing something different, in that there
will be a supplement, or addition containing the activities concerning the Seniors.
This will be completed as soon after graduation as possible and this supplement will
be mailed to the seniors and handed out with the rest of the books next fall. We sincere-
ly hope no one is hurt or feels slighted due to this change.

Saymg a word of thanks is not nearly enough. Because this year I have had an
outstanding staff, a mere repeated thank-you cannot express the way I appreciate all
those who so unselfishly gave of their time for Stosag 71. My deepest gratitude goes to
Peg McCarthy and George Burke for their advice and photography help, Jane Roberts,
Cathy Hannigan and Larry Lehto who struggled with this thing over Christmas, Prof. Ed
Pira for his patience and understanding, Al Bouchard, Bob Martin, Elaine Christensen,
Jean Brackley, and Frank Trovato for their help and suggestions, Shafer Studios for the
photography, and Dave Lombard for being so helpful and available when needed.

I hope there are no hard feelings over this edition. I would like to thank all the
students of Stockbridge, because you are the yearbook. If you are not satisfied then it
is no one's fault but your own, because there was an open door at any time for your
comments, and suggestions.

One more special thanks to two students for their moral support, and lots of coffee
for those late nights, Cindy Cibelli and Linda Desmarais.

I felt that it has been "a very good year" and I wish the best of luck to next year's
staff headed by Jane Roberts, and I hope that her staff will be as fantastic as mine was.
Thank you again.

Cyndi Davis
