Dedication
When one begins their venture at Stockbridge, they don't really know what
they're in for. All though many of the instructors and staff members do a
wonderful job in assisting us in our transition, this one particular person
rises above them all. With his sense of humor, dedication to education and
friendliness we are better able to adjust to our new way of life. Throughout
our two years at Stockbridge we have made many friends; some we will see
again and others we will not. However, we can all be assured that no matter
what happens, he will always be there for us. Now that we have finished our
two years at Stockbridge, we the graduating class of 1989 dedicate this
edition of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture's yearbook to Dennis H.
Ryan III for all his hard work, determination and constant smiles. Thanks for
all your support and keep up the good work!
Class of 1989
Congratulations you did it! And believe me, your friends, teachers, parents, and
in some cases wives and husbands are mighty proud of you.
I sometimes think back to some of my graduations and reminisce about what 1
learned, and it seems that the most important things were not just the skills to
perform technical tasks, but the ability to think through problems and plan quality
solutions. You have probably already forgotten a great deal of the facts you had
learned, but the thinking skills will stick forever.
Now you are ready to go out into the market place and join the thousands of
other successful Stockbridge graduates in rewarding careers. 1 ask just one favor -
don't forget us. Keep in touch by responding to alumni questionnaires and join us
at alumni activities throughout the year. You are now part of the most loyal and
supportive alumni group at the Gniversity of Massachusetts.
Again - congratulations on your achievement.
Harry L. Mosher, Director
Karen Cerow
Elizabeth Wiernasz
The Stockbridge class of 1989 has been very fortunate to have two of the most wonderful
secretaries on campus. Elizabeth Wiernasz and Karen Cerow can be found every day in the
Stockbridge office. They always go out of their way to help everyone. If they don't know the answer
to a question, they are always quick to find the correct one. They are two of the best friends that any
of us could have, always ready to lend a hand. The class of 1 989 is very proud to have these two
dedicated ladies and wish both of them all the best in the future.
The Stockbridge class of 1 989 would like to express our special thanks to Professor
James F. Anderson and Doctor Francis W. Holmes for their many years of
dedication. We sincerely wish you the best.
Professor Anderson came to the University of Massaciiusetts and
began teaching in 1948. During his time at the university, Professor
Anderson did extensive research evaluating apple cultivars and many
varieties of different small fruits. He also worked many years for the
Massachusetts Trueness to Name Inspection Service, a service which
inspected fruit trees in the nursery for trueness to name. Along with
being a teacher. Professor Anderson was also advisor to all Fruit and
Vegetable Crop majors in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture for
twenty years. After forty years of service to the University and his
students, Professor Anderson retired this past autumn. Presently, he is
the editor of the proceedings of the New England Fruit Growers
Meetings and plans to remain active in the Massachusetts Fruit Growers
Association.
Francis W. Holmes was born on May 21, 1929 in Yonkers, New
York. In his career as a student he received his PhD. in Plant Pathology
from Cornell University in 1954. From 1954 to 1962 Francis Holmes
was an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Shade
Tree Laboratories. He became a professor in 1970 and he carried on
until now. Dr. Holmes has been teaching Stockbridge students since the
fall of 1972 and has been the Director of the Shade Tree Laboratories
since 1973.
Dr. Holmes is a very special professor that many of the students of
Stockbridge had the honor to be instructed by. He will be retiring from
instructing at the university this year. However, he will continue to
conduct experiments at the university. We can be proud that we were
the last class of Stockbridge students to have had him as an instructor.
Dr. Holmes, the Stockbridge class of 1 989 wishes you the best in the
years to come.
This year we were saddened by the loss of a dedicated, sincere
and well-loved professor. We will forever be touched by his
philosophical interludes and the concluding sunsets he gave to
us, sharing with us his intense respect for the world and all it
contained as well as rejoicing in its unquestionable beauty. We
have been blessed to have had Dr. Rosenau as an instructor and
true friend, something which can never be denied. He will be
missed dearly . . . but never forgotten.
The following is a poem which we dedicate to the man who
succeeded in gaining our respect for him as a person who showed
caring in everything he touched.
To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of
intelligent people and
Affection of children;
To earn the appreciation
of honest critics and
Endure
the betrayal of false friends.
To appreciate beauty, to find
the best in others; to leave the
world a bit better, whether by
A healthy child a garden
patch
or redeemed social conditions
To know even one life has
breathed
easier because you have lived
This is to have succeeded.

Unfortunately, all of the pictures that were taken of our
basketball team and games came out blurry. This was
caused by camera malfunctions that were not discovered
until after the basketball season was over. Below is an
example of how the pictures came out.
Sorry.

Coach Jack Leaman, Mark Lee, Wayne Pike, Don Pease, iVlatt Girouard, Eric
Anderson
The Stockbridge Basketball Team of 1988-89 had some tough
footsteps to follow in from the 87-88 team. Unfortunately, they had
a rough season ending up 4-8 in their league.
Once again under the leadership of Coach Jack Leaman, the team
did improve from the beginning of the season. Although their record
may have not shown it, their efforts on the court did. It was an all
around tough year because the team consisted of only ten players,
many of which were unable to attend practice all the time. Only one
player, senior captain, Pat Hayes had played the year before. So with
the little experience the team had, they actually did very well. The
team consisted of six freshmen and four seniors. They are, Matt
Girouard, Eric Anderson and Steve Fernandez (Seniors) Mark Lee,
Don Pease, Doug Capodanno, Shawn Fernandez, Wayne Pike and
Bob Clarke (Freshmen).
Although it was not a winning season, it was still a good time.
Coach Jack Leaman, the players and manager deserve a round of
applause for their efforts.
In conclusion, I would like to wish next year's team and all the
teams after that the best of luck while participating in Stockbridge
Basketball.

Alpha Tau Gamma is the social fraternity of Stockbridge.
Founded in 1919, ATG has had a long proud bond with the
school as all new members of the fraternity must be enrolled
in Stockbridge. It is this common theme of agricultural
interests coupled with the shared experiences of living together
for at least two years that makes the bonds of friendship at
ATG last a lifetime.
In the past Alpha Tau Gamma has sponsored events such as
the Fall Picnic, a Halloween Party, our November Beach Party
and an annual bash on St Patrick's Day which is used to raise
money for Muscular Dystrophy ATG has also helped several
other Greek houses, landscape their property and build a play
area at an Amherst elementary school.
Regrettably ATG lost it's charter and was forced to close
it's doors amid allegations of hazing. ATG will remain closed h
for the next two years but in the meantime, plans are in the ^?.
works for a new and even stronger house to start up again. ^^
We are down but not out, a charter is only a piece of paper "^^"
but brotherhood lasts forever

Yearbooks hold the past it seems,
What we were and future dreams.
Pictures freeze a frame in time,
memories here are yours and mine.
So look and learn of days gone by,
your sure to feel a tear dropped eye.
All these pictures, memories past,
Stockbridge stage and we the cast.
Friends we made will always be,
preserved throughout the ages.
Friends we make and never see;
preserved within these pages.
Remember well the Stockbridge Hall,
and all the faces we recall.
Remember well the best two years,
when Stockbridge showed us our true peers.

EDITOR'S NOTE
Well, this is it, the yearbook that I
worked hard at. I hope you all enjoy
this book and its memories now and
for many years to come as I will.
After all, yearbooks are a
preservation of good times.
Patience, endurance, time,
budgeting and determination are
only a few of the things I've learned
by being editor.
I'd like to thank the yearbook crew
(see page 59) and my great friends for
helping me make this book. I couldn't
have done it without them. Thanks a
bunch!!!
Well, Its been a great two years
learning and making special friends.
I'll miss you all. Have a great life and
keep smiling!!
