FIRST  GENERATION. 

Nathaniel  Foote  was  married  in  England,  about  the  year 
1615,  to  Elizabeth  Deming,  sister  of  Mr.  John  Derning,  one  of  the 
first  settlers  of  Wethersfield,  Connecticut.  After  the  death  of  Mr. 
Foote,  his  widow  was  married,  about  the  year  1646,  to  "  Mr. 
Thomas  Welles.  Magistrate,"  afterwards  Governor  of  the  Colony, 
whom  she  likewise  survived. 

Mr.  Nathaniel  Foote  died  in  1644,  aged  about  51  years. 

Mrs.  Elizabeth  Foote,  alias  Welles,  died  July  38,  1683,  aged 
about  88  years.  ^>

Nathaniel  Foote,  of  Wethersfield,  (Conn.,)  was  married  to 
Elizabeth  Smith,  daughter  of  Lieut.  Samuel  Smith,  of  the  same 
town,  afterwards  of  Hadley,  (Mass.,)   1646.     After  his  death  she 
was  again  married  to  William  Gull,  first  of  Wethersfield,  after- 
wards of  Hatfield,  (Mass.,)  by  whom  she  had  four  children. 
Mr.  Nathaniel  Foote  died  in  the  year  1654~aged  34  years. 
Mrs.  Elizabeth  Foote,  alias  Gull,  survived  her  last  husband,  and 

died  -m^.

FOURTH  GENERATION. 


Nathaniel  Foote  was  married  to  Margaret  Bliss,  daughter  of 
Nathaniel  Bliss,  of  Springfield,  (Mass.,)  and  grand-daughter  of 
Thomas  Bliss,  one  of  the  first  settlers  of  Hartford,  (Conn.,)  and  of 
Margaret  Bliss,  his  wife,  May  2,  1672.  He  settled  in  Hatfield, 
(Mass. ,)  but  subsequently  dwelt  successively  in  Springfield,  (Mass. ,) 
Stratford,  (Conn.,)  Branford,  (Conn.,)  and  in  Wethersfield,  in  the 
same  State,  where  he  died. 

Quarter-Master  Nathaniel  Foote,  died  at  Wethersfield,  January 
12,  1703,  of  a  lingering  consumption,  aged  55  years  and  2  days. 

His  widow,  Mrs.  Margaret  Foote,  died  in  Colchester,  (Conn.,) 
April  3,  1745,  aged  95  years.

Nathaniel  Foote,  of  Colchester,  (Conn.,)  was  twice  married. 
1st.  To  Ann  Clark,  of  Lebanon,  (Conn.,)  July  4,  1711.  She  died 
June  25,  1726.     "June  25,  1726,  my  loving  wife,  Ann,  departed 


this  life  about  ye  breaking  of  ye  day,  and  went  to  rest,  as  I  be- 
lieve, and  left  me  a  sorrowful  man,  with  eight  small  children." 
[Nathaniel  Foote's  family  record].  2nd.  To  Hannah  Coleman, 
widow  of  Noah  Coleman,  of  Colchester,  September  13,  1727. 

Mrs.  Hannah  Foote  died  in  1765. 

Nathaniel  Foote,  Esq.,  died  August  20,  1774,  aged  92,  nearly.

wanting  37  days. 

Mr.  Nathaniel  Foote  died  May  9,  1811,  aged  99  years,  wanting 
10  days.

Israel  Foote,  brother  of  Nathaniel  Foote,  of  Colchester, 
(Conn.,)  was  married  to  Elizabeth  Kimberly,  daughter  of  Thomas 
Kimberly,  Esq.,  of  Glastonbury,  (Conn.,)  and  of  Ruth  (Hale) 
Kimberly,  his  wife,  December  28,  1748. 

Israel  Foote,  died  August  25,  1785,  in  the  73d  year  of  his  age. 

His  widow,  Mrs.  Elizabeth  Foote.  died  January  6,  1798,  in  the 
82d  year  of  his  age. 

*From  genealogical  records  in  the  possession  of  Dr.  Patterson,  of  New 
Jersey.  He  says  Nathaniel  Foote  married  Patience  Gates,  daughter  of 
Joseph  and  Elizabeth  Gates.  She  was  born  March  21, 1712,  and  baptized 
March  22,  1712.

His  widow,  Mrs.  Abigail  Foote,  died  January  2,  1852,  aged  94 
years,  9  months  and  19  days.

Nathaniel  Foote,  of  Colchester  (Conn.,)  was  thrice  married, 
1st,  to  Jerusha  Cad  well,  of  New  Hartford, in  the  same  state,  March 
28,  1769. 

She  was  born  December  22,  1747,  and  died  December  30.  1777, 
a^ed  30.  2d.  To  Patience  Skinner,  daughter  of  Israel  Skinner,  of 
said  Colchester,  Westchester  Society,  July  16,  1778.  She  died 
March  12,  1790,  in  the  35th  year  of  her  age.  3d.  To  Abigail 
Foote,  daughter  of  Israel  Foote,  his  cousin,  of  the  same  Col- 
chester, January  31,  1791. 

Mr.  Nathaniel  Foote  died  January  22,  1829,  aged  87. 

His  widow,  Mrs.  Abigail  Foote,  died  at  said  Westchester,  Jan- 
uary 2,  1852,  aged  94  years,  9  months  and  19  days.  She  was  a 
woman  of  remarkable  strength  and  decision  of  character,  a  friend 
to  the  poor  and  needy.  The  words  of  King  Lemuel  could  be  ap- 
plied to  her:  "  She  seeketh  wool  and  flax,  and  worketh  willingly 
with  her  hands."  Her  nobleness  of  character  and  her  own  works 
do  praise  her.

Huldah  Foote,  of  Colchester,  Westchester  Society,  was  mar- 
ried to  Oliver  Usher,son  of  Dr.  Robert  Usher,of  Chatham,  (Conn.,) 
June  18th,  1789. 

She  died  September  21,  1791. 

Child. 

1  Jerusha,       bom Married    James    "Wakeman.       They 

lived  and  died  at  Macon,  Georgia. 
No  children.

Jerusha  Foote  was  married  to  Stephen  Skinner,  her  cousin, 
of  Colchester,  (Conn.,)  They  removed  to  Western  New  York  and 
subsequently  to  Maitland,  Canada,  about  the  year  1840. 

She  died  at  Burford,  Brant  county,  Ontario,  November  11, 
1846,  and  was  buried  at  Maitland,  Canada. 

Mr.  Skinner  was  again  married,  and  lived  and  died  at  Mait- 
land, Canada. 

There  were  several  children  by  his  first  marriage  who  died  in 
infancy.     I  have  only  the  record  of  two  of  them.

Patience  Foote  was  married  to  William  Brainard,   son  of 
William  and  Lucy  (Day)  Brainard,  of  Colchester,   Westchester 
Society,  (Conn.,)  October  31,  1797. 

Mr.  William  Brainard  died  March  18,  lf44. 
His  widow,  Mrs.  Patience  (Foote)  Brainard,  died  June  19,  1859, 
aged  76  years,  4  months  and  18  days.

three  generations  in  direct  line  bearing  the  name  of  Nathaniel,  and  may  it 
continue.

Asa  Foote  was  thrice  married  1.  To  Betsey  Gates,  of  War- 
ren, Herkimer  county,  New  York,  September  8,  1811.  She  was 
born  September  19,  1792.  She  died  October  14,  1832.  2.  To 
Esther  Ann  Ferry,  of  Sherburne,  New  York.  She  was  born  June 
18,  1788.  She  died  January  21,  1845,  aged  57.  3.  To  Christina 
Brisban,  of  Sherburne,  New  York,  daughter  of  John  and  Vashti 
Speor,  of  Great  Barrington,  Massachusetts,  July  12,  1845.  She 
was  born  January  9,  1791.     She  died  March  21,  1872,  aged  81. 

Mr.  Asa  Foote  died  July  4,  1859,  aged  73.  He  had  no  children 
by  his  second  or  third  wife.

Mr.  Amaziah  Brainard  died  April  1,  1841,  aged  60  years,  9 
months  and  19  days.     He  was  a  farmer. 

Mrs.  Huldah  (Foote)  Brainard  died  at  Hartford,  (Conn.,)  Aug. 
9,  1881,  aged  89  years.  8  months  and  5  days.  She  was  laid  by  the 
side  of  her  late  husband,  Mr.  Amaziah  Brainard,  in  the  burying 
ground,  in  the  south-west  district  of  Westchester,  (Conn.,)  in  the 
town  of  Colchester.

She  died  February  24,  1853,  at  Sherburne,  N.  Y.  2d.  To 
Clarissa  Ely,  widow  of  Horace  Ely,  of  Lyme.  (Conn.,)  and 
•laughter  of  Joseph  and  Phebe  (Sterling)  Marvin,  of  Lyme. 
(Conn.,)  February  12,  1854. 

Mrs.  C'arissa  Foote  died  April  7,  1881,  at  Sherburne,  N.  Y. 

Mr.  Israel  Foote  died  at  Sherburne,  N.  Y..  July  3,  1884.

May  28,  1828.     She  was  born  May  7,  1804.     They  lived  for  a  num- 
ber of  years  at  Westchester,  Conn.,  then  removed  to  Colchester, 
Conn.,  where  she  died  January  23,  1872. 
Mr.  Das  id  Foote  died  at  Colchester,  Conn.,  January  27,  1883.

Abigail  Foote  was  married  to  Alfred  Isham  Loomis.  son  of 
David  and  Clarissa  (Williams)  Loomis,  of  Westchester,  Conn., 
April  6,  1826.  He  was  born  November  3,  1796.  They  celebrated 
their  golden  wedding  April  6,  1876,  her  sister  and  brothers  being 
then  living  but  unable  to  be  present  to  participate  in  the 
festivities. 

Mr.  Alfred  Isham  Loomis  died  March  25,  1882.  He  was  a 
farmer.

Dr.  Jira  Skinner  was  twice  married.  1st.  To  Julia  Hide, 
adopted  daughter  of  Harry  Fargo,  of  Sherburne,  N.  Y.  He 
studied  medicine  at  Fairfield,  N.  Y.,  and  after  his  marriage  he 
•  removed  to  Brantford,    Ontario,    where   he  practiced  medicine. 

Mrs.  Julia  (Hide)  Skinner,  died 2d.      To 

Jira  Skinner  died  at  Brantford,  Ontario.

Jerusha  Skinner  was  married  to  Dr.  Buzzel  Church,    of  Mer- 

sieville,  Ontario, He  was  a  member  of  Parliament 

at  the  time  of  his  death.     He  died She  died  soon 

after.

Jerusha  (Foote)  Brainard  was  married  to  Alfred  Kellogg, 
son  of  Martin  and  Rachel  (Hosford)  Kellogg,  of  Chatham,  Conn., 
May  6,  1823.  Mrs.  Jerusha  (Brainard)  Kellogg  died  November  6, 
1828,  aged  28.     She  had  no  children. 

He  died 

Nathaniel  (Foote)  Brainard  was  married  to  Lucy  Brainard 
Staples,  daughter  of  Joseph  and  Susannah  (Brainard)  Staples,  his 
cousin,  March  25,  1834.  She  died  August  3,  1877.  He  died 
January  9,  1878.

William  Brainard  was  twice  married.  1st.  To  Eliza  Car- 
rier, daughter  of  David  and  Freen  (Carrier)  Carrier,  of  Colches- 
ter, Westchester  Society,  (Conn.,)  July  13,  1837.  She  was  born 
August  20,  1813.  She  died  August  22,  1852.  2d.  To  Rhoda 
Staples,  daughter  of  Joseph  and  Susannah  (Brainard)  Staples,  of 
Colchester,  Westchester  Society,  (Conn.,)  May  4,  1853.  She  died 
April  28,  1873. 

Mr.  William  Brainard  died  February  25,  1882,  aged  70  years

Nathaniel  Foote,  Esq.,  was  married  to  Olivia  M.  Knox, 
daughter  of  John  and  Mary  Knox,  of  Nelson,  Madison  County, 
N.  Y. ,  April  28,  1847.     She  was  born  August  16,  1814. 

Nathaniel  Foote  is  the  oldest  son  of  Asa  Foote,  of  Sherburne, 
N.  Y.  Asa  Foote  was  the  brother  next  younger  than  Nathaniel 
Foote,  whose  early  death  caused  an  interruption  to  the  family 
appellative.  But  it  is  resumed  in  Asa  Foote's  family  by  his 
naming  his  eldest  son  Nathaniel,  and  has  been  continued  for 
three  generations,  all  of  whom  are  now  living.  I  hope  the  oldest 
son  of  the  oldest  son  will  still  continue  to  be  called  Nathaniel 
through  all  coming  generations. 

Nathaniel  Foote  is  a  lawyer  of  successful  practice  in  Morris- 
ville,  N.  Y.  On  his  admission  to  the  bar  in  1840  he  commenced 
practice  at  Morrisville,  the  county  neat  of  Madison  County,  N.  Y., 
where  he  has  ever  since  followed  his  profession.  Soon  after  he 
commenced  practice  he  was  appointed  master  and  examiner  in 
chancery,  which  office  he  held  until  the  court  of  chancery  was 
abolished  by  the  adoption  of  the  new  State  constitution  in  1848.

Rev.  Israel  Foote,  D.  D.,  was  married  to  Mary  Louise  Banks, 
daughter  of  William  and  Sarah  Maria  Banks,  of  Bainbridge,  Che- 
nango County,  N.  Y.,  May  13,  1854.     She  was  born  April  23,  1826. 

Reverend  Israel  Foote,  D.  D.,  graduated  at  Trinity  College, 
Hartford,  (Conn.,)  in  the  year  1842.  He  was  ordained  deacon  in 
the  year  1845,  in  the  chapel  of  Jubilee  College,  Illinois,  by  the 
rector,  Rev.  Philander  Chase,  D.  D.,  bishop  of  the  diocese  of 
Illinois.  He  was  ordained  priest  in  St.  Paul's  Church,  Rochester, 
N.  Y.,  in  the  year  1846,  by  the  rector,  Rev.  W.  H.  De  Lancey,  D. 
D.,  L.  L.  D.,  D.  C.  L.  The  first  nine  years  of  his  ministry  he  held 
the  rectorship  of  Christ's  Church,  Guilford,  and  St.  Peter's 
Church,  Bainbridge,  N.  Y.  He  held  the  rectorship  of  Trinity 
Church,  Fredonia,  N.  Y.,  three  years,  from  thence  was  called  to 
take  charge  of  the  mathematical  department  in  Debeaux  College, 
Suspension  Bridge,  N.  Y.,  where  he  remained  until  May,  1859, 
when  he  received  a  call  to  St.  Paul's  Church,  Rochester,  N.  Y. 
He  held  the  rectorship  of  this  church  23  years,  when  age  and 
failing  health  made  it  necessary  for  him  to  resign.  In  accepting 
his  resignation,  the  vestry  conferred  on  him  the  honorary  title  of 
Rector  Emeritus,  with  an  annuity  of  $1,000  a  year  during  his 
natural  life.  Rev.  Israel  Foote  received  the  degree  of  Doctor  of 
Divinity  from  the  Rochester  University  in  the  city  of  Rochester, 
N.  Y.,  in  the  early  part  of  his  rectorship  of  St.  Paul's  Church.

cine  at  Geneva,  N.  Y.,  took  his  degree  in  medicine  January,  1848. 
He  then  went  to  Toronto,  Canada,  and  took  his  degree  in  medi- 
cine at  the  University  of  King's  College  of  that  place  in  April, 
1851.  He  practiced  his  profession  in  Aylrner,  Elgin  County, 
Ontario,  till  his  death. 

Dr.  Ezra  Foote  died  July  20,  1876.  He  was  buried  at  Aylrner, 
Ontario.

Hartford,  Conn.,  November  29,  1865.  She  was  born  September 
27,  1843,  at  East  Haddam,  Conn.  Mr.  Leverett  Brainard  re- 
moved to  Hartford,  Conn.,  in  1853,  at  which  time  he  was  elected 
the  first  Secretary  of  the  City  Fire  Insurance  Company,  a  position 
he  held  vintil  he  entered  into  partnership  witli  th*1  old  firm  of 
Case,  Lock  wood  &  Co.,  now  incorporated  under  the  firm  name 
of  the  Case.  Lockwood  &  Brainard  Company,  one  of  the  largest 
printing  and  publishing  establishments  in  New  England.  He  is 
Pi-esident  of  the  Hartford  Paper  Company,  located  at  Poquonock 
and  Rainbow  with  an  office  in  Hartford,  Conn.  He  holds  .  the 
office  of  Director  in  the  iEtna  National  Bank,  in  the  Orient  Fire, 
in  the  ^Etna  Life,  and  the  Connecticut  General  Life  Insurance 
Companies,  also  in  the  Hartford  Silver  Plate  Company.  In  the 
fall  of  1883  he  was  chosen  by  a  large  majority  to  represent  the 
city  in  the  Connecticut  legislature.  In  the  discbarge  of  his 
legislative  duties  he  was  appointed  house  chairman  of  the  com- 
mittee on  railroads,  one  of  the  most  important  of  the  several 
committees.     He  has  led  an  active  business  life.

Nathaniel  Foote  took  a  course  of  study  in  medicine;  first,  with 
Dr.  Hewel  Rogers  and  his  son  George  H.  Rogers,  M.  D.  He  then 
entered  the  office  of  Professor  Charles  Hooker,  M.  D.,  of  Yale 
medical  department.  He  took  a  course  of  lectures  and  diploma 
from  the  Berkshire  Medical  College,  in  1852.  He  held  the  posi- 
tion of  principal  of  Colbert  Institute,  (in  the  Chickasaw  Nation) 
under  the  control  of  the  Methodist  Episcopal  church,  south, 
practicing  medicine  also,  until  the  spring   of  1860.     He  then  re-

turned  North  and  took  a  position  with  the  Jersey  City  Insurance 
Company,  as  superintendent  of  agencies.  In  1874  was  elected 
Secretary  of  the  company,  and  in  1879  was  elected  President  of 
the  company,  a  position  he  now  holds.

He  is  a  dealer  in  all  kinds  of  domestic  lumber,  building  and  ship 
timber,  &c,  at  North  Westchester,  Conn.

N.  Y..  December  8,  1870,  since  which  time  he  has  been  in  the 
practice  of  law,  two  and  a  half  years  at  Morrisville,  N.  Y.,  and 
since  July,  1873,  at  Rochester,  N.  Y.,  where  he  is  now  a  member 
of  the  law  firm  of  Stull,  Foote  &  Taylor.     He  was  married  to

by  Abel  Wheeler  and  Elizabeth  Tyler  Reed,  formerly  of  Brook-

manufacturing  at  Worcester,  Mass.,  where  he  now  lives.  No
