PREFACE

The purpose of TABERNACLE CEMETERY LISTINGS is to honor the people who are buried
in this early community cemetery near Black Mountain, in Buncombe County, North Carolina,
and to provide an orderly source of information regarding burials, their locations, and information
about these who shaped the early times of the community.

Inquiries and searches for this information have prompted compilation of this book by volunteers
Robert Benton Goodson, Joyce Justus Parris, and Joan Drake Goodson who are members of
Tabernacle United Methodist Church. It is their wish that this material will be of value and use
to researchers in future generations.

The records for Tabernacle were gathered from gravestone inscriptions, death certificates, and
information supplied by family members.

The records for the Ingram Graveyard were included to encompass other early setUers of this
community with family ties to the church and to these who are buried in Tabernacle Cemetery.

THE INFORMATION RECORDED HERE IS AS IT APPEARS ON TOMBSTONES.

ADDITIONAL DATA GATHERED FROM FAMDLY MEMBERS AND DEATH CERTD7ICATES
ARE INSERTED WITHIN PARENTHESES.

CHURCH, CEMETERY AND SCHOOL:
METHODIST BEGINNINGS ON THE BUNCOMBE FRONTffiR

by

Rev. Larry M. Melton, D. Min.

Pastor, Tabernacle United Methodist Church

In 1989, as a part of a project for Drew University, I wrote a brief history of Methodism as it
began and continues in the Leicester and Sandy Mush Townships in the northwestern part of Buncombe
County. The work included the stories of seventeen churches and many of the families that formed these
Methodist congregations.

As I sifted through the bits and pieces of historical evidence that had survived the years, I was led to
an unexpected conclusion: the practice of religion on the frontier cannot be understood apart from family
history and community history. Nor can it be separated from the history of schools and family cemeteries.
In truth, these three institutions — churches, cemeteries, and schools — developed together in the midst of
the pioneers' struggles to tame the land. And for that reason I found it practically impossible, most of
the time, to determine a reliable beginning date for the oldest churches.

Of course, pioneers brought their religious beliefs with them, but the erection of a church building was
not usually high among the early priorities. There was the business of survival. If a pioneer family
member died soon after settling, then a cemetery would be established first. If pioneer families had the
children and the means to hire a subscription teacher, perhaps a one-room school would be the first
purpose for the building that would almost surely be used as a meeting house for the church on
Sundays.

In any event, once land was used for a cemetery, or as a site for a church or school building, it could
not be used for farming. So it was practical to establish these conveniences on the same site, and that
is generally how it happened. In this environment, the Methodist Episcopal Church in America prospered.
The reason is simple. In 1784, when Methodist people officially became a "Church," they were actually
little more than a group of "societies" gathered for spiritual support and worship and nurtured by circuit
riding preachers. These societies were easy to form, family oriented, and could meet anywhere. They
provided a form of religious practice that adapted well to frontier life and then settled into church
buildings when they were available.

Thus, I found documents showing that the first new member to join the Methodist "Church" on Big
Sandy Mush was received into membership in 1812; the earliest grave in the cemetery dates back to
1820, and the land was deeded to the trustees of the Sandy Mush Methodist Episcopal Church in 1837
(the date the church uses as its founding date). Also, there is evidence to indicate that the building,
which served as both a church and school from the beginning, could have been built on the site as
early as 1816 !

After the frontier era, deeds can be used with some confidence to establish the beginning of a church.
But this practice is not reliable when dealing with antebellum churches and should be weighed with
other evidence. For example, I now pastor Tabernacle United Methodist Church. Charles Kyle gave three
acres of land to Tabernacle Methodist Episcopal Church ( South ) in 1847. Some might suppose that
date to mark the beginning of this church of the Tabernacle School (same building), but I doubt it.

The earliest grave in the cemetery is dated 1837 and appears to be the three - year - old son of the
Tabernacle School teacher. Since the Kyle family owned the property at that time and had many children,
I expect the teacher was teaching in 1837. The school building could have been where the cemetery and
church are located now or on the other side of the Kyle property at a site that would later be referred
to as the "old burnt church place."

In addition, records reveal that William and Mary Kyle setded on their property in 1792 and they had
nine children. Charles, who would give three acres to the church in 1847, was one of the nine. They all
may have received education through this subscription teacher system at the church / school building. My
contention is simply that a reliable establishment date for the Tabernacle Church is impossible to
determine without further information. The official establishment date, 1837, taken from the cemetery, is
probably more accurate than the date of the deed, but who knows how much older the congregation may
be? If an answer is ever found to this mystery, it will not likely come from conference archives but
from family or community histories.

HISTORICAL FACTS OF TABERNACLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH:
ITS MEETING HOUSE AND COMMUNITY

The Tabernacle Meeting House was both a church used as a school and a school used as a church.
The first church of this Methodist congregation was located very near the intersection of Byrd Road
and Cragmont Road about one and one-half miles east of the present church. This site was later
referred to as "the old burnt church place." No written records of this first church exist.

According to the CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE of May 25, 1943, "Methodism of Black Mountain traces
itself to the present stock at Tabernacle Church as decidedly the oldest group of worshipping Methodist
in this immediate area; some saying that Francis Asbury preached at that point on one occasion."

A 1936 manuscript by James Peele Parker of Black Mountain states "the oldest house of worship in
the community, the location of which can be positively identified, stood near the intersection of Byrd
Road and Cragmont Road." It appears that this congregation moved to the present Tabernacle site.
In 1847 Charles Kyle made a deed and donated to Tabernacle Church three acres of land at the present
site. William and Mary Kyle and their nine sons came to Buncombe County about 1792. One of the
sons was Charles. He joined the church in 1848; his wife Mary joined in 1847. The Kyles owned land
on both sides of the North Fork of the Swannanoa River from Tabernacle toward the golf course.
The Byrd Road site was most likely Kyle property being used by the church. Thirty-five names appear
on the 1847 roll. By March of 1848 eleven more members were added, including Charles Kyle. The
membership included two slaves: Burnett's Rose and Stepp's Coleman.

The class book for 1847 names the preachers as J. Hasken and C. Godbey. Members were: L. P. Lytle,
Leader; Lucy Lakey, Jane Kyle, Agnes Bartlett, Mary Bartlett, Alley Bartlett, Nancy Bartlett, Barbery
Daugherty, Sarah Daugherty, Celia Lambert, Susan Kyle, Margaret Daugherty, Fletcher Fortune,
Jane Fortune, Harriet Ingram, Rachel Stepp, Parlen C. Stepp, Kelly Stepp, Mary Kyle, Nancy Stepp,
Adaline Stepp, James Wilson, Elizabeth Gillihan, Richard Lambert, Jesse Stepp, Harris Allison, Elizabeth
Allison, Henry Goodson, James Kyle, John Kyle, William Powers, Jemima Skates, Rebecca Baker,
Rebecca Goodson and Hamilton Bartlett. Added in March, 1848 were: Sarah Hemphill, Sarah T. Maffitt,
Isaac Baker, Jefferson Patiller, Elizabeth A. Stepp, Charles Kyle, Mary A. Walker, Burnett's Rose,
Stepp's Coleman, Susan Smart and Jesse R. Maffitt.

The location of the first church at Tabernacle was southwest of the present structure and in the
cemetery. The spot is marked with an inscribed granite stone.

The first church was of logs chinked with red clay mud. The windows were of boards hinged with
leather straps. The plank benches had no backs. The women generally sat on one side and the men
on the other side. Mrs. Cora Stepp Dula, a descendant of Kyle, described the inside of the log church
as "having a high boxed pulpit with a plank around the top and only the shoulders and head of the
preacher showing and lots of fiery preachers and protracted meetings." This first structure was known as
Tabernacle Meeting House and was used as a school as well as a church. It was not used during the
cold winter months.

It appears that the church might have existed at the Tabernacle site as early as 1837 or before. The
earliest grave marker is Phidilla, son of J. and M. E. Smart. A community cemetery developed, and
the church provided free burial space to members and non-members. Today the cemetery contains 555
marked graves and more than 200 unmarked graves.

In a 1928 interview George Fortune (1843 - 1933) [son of Fletcher Fortune] stated that he started to
school at Tabernacle in 1849 and his first teacher was Joseph Smart. (Uncle LaFayette Burnett's mother
was Smart's sister.) Fortune further stated that later teachers were William Porter, John Stepp, Alex
Dobson, James Curtis, Miss Matilda Porter and Sidney Pickens.

In a 1971 interview with J. R. Lance, he quoted William Stepp (1846- 1932) [son of Colbey Stepp]
as saying that he and W. R. Goodson (1860 - 1936) [son of Wesley Goodson] attended school at
Tabernacle and used sand - top desks as well as slates on which to write and figure.

In 1848 Tabernacle School committeemen were J. M. Hemphill, William Stepp and Fletcher Fortune.
J. C. Jarvis was the teacher that year and was paid $16 per month for a three-month session. The
curriculum included reading, writing and arithmetic. The attendance report shows that Elizabeth Stepp
attended 39 days; Mary Hemphill 3 days; Polly Goodson 44 days; Mary Fortune 44 days;
W.J. Allen 55 days; R. C. Lambert 22 days; S. F. Dougherty 23 days; William Burnett 11 days.

The preceding school and church information indicates that a church and school were well established
in 1847. Also the earliest marked grave in the church cemetery is 1837. It is the grave of Phidilla
L. Smart, born 31 Oct 1834; died 11 Nov 1837; son of J. & M . E. Smart; aged 3 yrs 11 days.
It appears that Tabernacle Meeting House was established several years prior to 1837. The Tabernacle
school existed from 1837 to around 1880.

Oak Grove School, which was at the corner of Lake Eden Road and Patton Lane, opened about 1881.
Patton Lane ran from Lake Eden Road in front of Oak Grove School; by way of Ingram Graveyard
(located at the back of Beech Glen Drive); crossed the North Fork River; passed beside the Colbey
Stepp house and continued toward Black Mountain. S. O. Ingram was teaching at Oak Grove in 1899
for $30 per month. The school committee was G. A. Morgan, Billy Goodson and Charlie Patton. The
teacher in 1900 was Meek Kerlee and his salary was $25 per month. Some 1899- 1901 names of
students were: Chandler, Fortune, Grag, Gray, Hall, Holyfield, Ingram, Ingle, Jones, Morgan, Merida,
Owensby, Patton, Rea, Smith, Turner, Foster, York, Wainscott, Love, Rymer, McKee, WatMns, Dickerson.
Cliff, Clark, Hamilton, Adams, Buchanan, Bird, Lanning, Powers, Presley, Randolph and Taylor.
M. P. Darby was the teacher in 1901 at $25 per month. Oak Grove School closed about 1901.

The next school in the Tabernacle Community was Lance School which was located at the corner of
Old Highway 70 and North Fork Road at the present site of the Cooper - Bussmann plant. A May 28,
1912 letter to the School Committee from County Superintendent A. C. Reynolds announced the
following salary apportionments to these districts: North Fork: $35 per month for five months;
Lance: $40 per month for five months, Black Mountain Colored: $35 per month for five months.
The Lance School was closed in 1919, and the students were transferred to Black Mountain where
a new brick schoolhouse had been constructed. This was the students' first exposure to schoolbus
transportation. At Lance, Oak Grove and Tabernacle they had walked to school.

Church minutes of 1879 show a church trial. A prosecutor was appointed and witnesses appeared.
Two men were charged that they had "drank drams"; two women were charged with dancing. One
person was charged with illegal cohabiting. "The committee finding the charges being sustained
they censured them and expelled them from the church." They were encouraged to repent and rejoin
the church. The early church records of 1847 show dismissal because of drinking alcohol. The records
of 1883 show the same concern.

The minutes of the Holston Conference, Asheville District, Swannanoa Circuit, July 24, 1879 show
Tabernacle on an eight - point charge. Total appropriations for the year for the preacher were $275.00.
Tabernacle's share was $50.00. Total quarterly appropriations for Tabernacle were $55.00.

The second church was constructed in 1887. It was a tall church with two front doors. Due to its
height and construction, it began to sway and creak with the wind and was described in the charge
conference minutes as "dangerous." This second church was torn down, and the materials were used
to build the present sanctuary in 1927. The front faced east with an open vestibule. Members described
this rebuilt structure as being ugly because it had no steeple and resembled a residence. By 1929 a
steeple and bell were added, and the south side became the present entrance.

The Tabernacle Community had a church, a school, cemetery, a miller, and later the services of a
Justice of the Peace and a general store. After the 1880's and the opening of the railroad through
the valley, people and businesses were drawn to Black Mountain which became a chartered town
in 1893.

Tabernacle United Methodist Church remains a viable church today with a present membership of 65
and an annual budget of $14,216.00. The church stands today with adequate facilities as a reminder
of the toil and dedication of generations past. Effort is made to preserve the old landmark in a
simple manner so that the heritage of the past may be an inspiration to the present and the future.
By the will of God, Tabernacle Church has served those past generations; it is serving the generation
of today and stands with open arms to serve future generations, so that the people may go forth and
serve the cause of Christ.

Cora Stepp Dula recalled that in 1889, as an eight-year-old child, she remembered a tall hemlock
tree close by the Tabernacle Meeting House.

The legend has been passed down that a black servant died in the North Fork section. The body
was hauled to the Tabernacle Graveyard for burial. On the way to the graveyard, someone
pulled a hemlock seedling from the road bank and planted it at the head of the grave.

The hemlock thrived until it was damaged by storm and lightning in 1970 and had to be removed.

A cross section of the hemlock is in the Archives Room of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
It has one hundred five annual growth rings. This means the tree was planted in 1865. The
grave and tree were in a prominent spot close to the church and appear in a painting in the
Archives Room.

Mrs. Dula believed the servant was from the household of her grandfather, Jesse Stepp.

Part of the stump of the tree remains beside the granite marker showing the location of the
Meeting House.

This is an old church with a glorious past. As we approach its sacred soil, it would not seem
strange to hear the words: "Take thy shoes from off thy feet for the place whereon thou standeth
is holy ground."

The cemetery and church are north of Highland Farms .8 mi. off Old Hwy 70.

LOCATION, POLICY AND MAINTENANCE:

Tabernacle Church Cemetery is bordered on the west by Padgett Cemetery and
Town of Black Mountain Cemetery; on the south by Hutchins Road; and the
church is on the east side.

Tabernacle Church Cemetery was a major community cemetery for about one
hundred years — from about 1830 through the 1930's. No fee has ever been
charged for burial space. A one hundred dollar maintenance fee has been charged
per new burial site since 1980. In 1980 the church trustees directed that the
boundaries of the cemetery were not to be extended.

The cemetery contains 550 marked graves and about 200 unmarked. Very few
burials have been made in recent years. Family members are responsible for
identifying vacant gravespaces within a family lot in the case of a burial.
Few vacant spaces remain.

The church does not budget money for cemetery maintenance; however, the
cemetery is maintained by a Cemetery Trust Fund which was established in 1976.
Interest earned from the trust fund is used for cemetery maintenance. The address
of Tabernacle Cemetery Trust Fund is 1421 North Fork Road, Black Mountain,
NC, 28711. Contributions are needed and most welcome.

HOW TO USE THE GRAVE LOCATOR MAP:

All gravesites are listed in alphabetical order.

Each grave listing is followed by a gravesite number.

The graves at the ends of rows are identified on the map as reference points.

On the map, determine the line where the number you are seeking is located.

Once the line is determined, proceed walking the line to find the gravesite you are seeking.

Some gravesites are left (L) or right (R) of a number.

Use the map by following from lower numbers to higher numbers.

Some of the rows are irregular, and some are shortened rows.

Please remember that family lots were laid out in the early years at random without plats.

This makes the preparation of a map very difficult; however, the use of the map will

hasten your search.

The final graphic of the map was prepared by Patrick Laws, Vocational Education Student,
Charles D. Owen High School.

INGRAM GRAVEYARD

Information regarding Ingram Graveyard is included because of the close relationship of the families
there to those at Tabernacle Cemetery.

Ingram Graveyard was set aside as an Ingram family cemetery by Bobbie Ingram and his wife
Jennie Martin Ingram about 1820. Both are buried there. The Bobbie Ingram homesite was on the
present Camp Rockmont property about 200 yards inside the main gate. Bobbie and Jennie Martin
Ingram settled here in December, 1800. Their grants and purchases included 1122 acres.

Ingram Graveyard is off Lake Eden Road at the back side of Beech Glen Drive. The Graveyard is
surrounded by private property and access is limited.
