PREFATORY NOTE.

The following Tables were compiled, about fifteen years ago, mainly with a view to
assist students in associating the leading events and literary works of modem
Europe with each other. The want of a sufficiently clear tabular representation of
the relations of History and Literature appears to be among the causes of the confu-
sion so often exhibited regarding the most elementary dates. One of the greatest,
among several, difficulties, in the arrangement of these Tables has been the necessity
of selection and variation of scale. It being obviously impossible to keep the same
proportion of space in ages when comparatively few events or works in a generation
remain on record, and in others, such as our own, the scale varies, from centuries in
the earlier to periods of five years in the later sheets.

The further principles of the system of tabulation may be shortly stated : —

I. English Literature and History are placed together to be illustrated by the
columns on either side.

IL The names of statesmen or authors are on the line, as far as the exigencies of
printing have permitted, of the date at which they exerted their greatest influence.

in. In the Historical columns the dates indicate —

A. The year in which events occurred.

B. The accessions and deaths or abdications ofmonarchs.
c. The periods of power of statesmen.

(Except where enclosed in brackets ( ) which indicate the dates of birth
and death.)
IV. In the columns of Literature, Science, and Art, the dates without brackets
indicate the birth and death.

Occasionally one of these being uncertain, the birth is marked b — , or the death
D — . Both being uncertain or unimportant, a single date is given as a "floruit,"
generally that of the chief work of the author. Several American writers, whose pre-
cise dates have not been discovered, have been ranged together at the end of
Table XX.

vi PREFATORY NOTE.

V. An attempt has been made to indicate the importance of the author, potentate,
or event by the size of the type. The accuracy of the judgment in this case must
remain matter of opinion. I am responsible in the columns of History and Litera-
ture ; my better informed coadjutors in those of Science and Art. In the last two
European Tables, largely concerned with contemporaries, a distinction which might
be invidious has been abandoned, and all living writers or artists are printed in the
same ordinary type. A rule has been made to include only those whose reputation
has been established for at least ten years. In crowded departments of literature, as
Romance, only representative names have been selected. A few are inserted rather
in deference to popular judgment than in accordance with my own estimate.

VI. Several names being repeated, sometimes at no great intervals, it has been
considered essential to the pictorial representation aimed at, to distinguish by different
colours, those associated with different nations. Practical obstacles have restricted
the application of this rule; but it is hoped that the result will, even by the appear-
ance of the pages, convey some indication of the historic issues at stake.

VII. When a writer has been very prominent in two departments, as of Science
and Philosophy, or Literature and Art, as in the case of Leonardo da Vinci,
Leibnitz, Descartes, and Pascal, his name appears in two columns. When his
eminence in one eclipses that of his reputation in another, he appears, as in the
case of Bacon and Galileo, only in that where he was pre-eminent. In rare instances
a great name has been inserted, slightly out of its exact place, at the head of the
period which the author's influence seems to have dominated.

The reception of the earlier editions has made me sensible at once of the utility ol
an undertaking, involving an amount of labour only inferior to that of compiling a
dictionary, and of the hazards to which it is exposed. To many of my critics I am
indebted for corrections of mistakes almost inevitable, and for supplying sometimes
serious omissions. Others have made of an obviously rapid survey occasion to air
crotchets, as that which regards it as a crime to speak of " Ancient History," or of
"Charlemagne." It seems needful to state that the phrase "English Literature"
here signifies Literature originating in England, and that " in power" indicates the
period of a politician's greatest influence, in or out of office. To avoid cavil I now
append the dates of the chief Prime Ministers, with the protest that I can only record
the chief. For details which, as expressly stated, are excluded from the design of the
work, I refer my readers to the "Annual Register."

This Edition, as the last, has undergone extensive revision. Four Tables of Ameri-
can History and Literature have been added, and two new columns have been
inserted. One of these (the distinctive feature of this edition) aims at being an

PREFATORY NOTE. vii

epitome, as far as that can be accomplished by names and dates, of the history of
Modern Science and Invention : while the other, that of the Fine Arts, designs to
present a condensed view of the progress of Architecture, Painting, Engraving, etc.

My obligations in pursuance of a task, more properly belonging to an Academy
or an Institute, are too extensive to be detailed. I have more especially to acknow-
ledge those to Dr. Charles Grindrod of Malvern, to whose special cap.icity I am
indebted for the column of the Fine Arts, to Mr. Craibe Angus for lists of recent
French and Dutch painters, and to Mr. William Sharp for important additions. I owe
the proximate adequacy of the chemical catalogue to Prof. John Ferguson, who has
supplied me with special lists, besides his numerous recondite pamphlets. Dr.
M'Kendrick has generously allowed me the free use of his Tables of the History of
Physiology. I have to thank Mr. \V. R. Jack and Dr. George Dickson for a careful
catalogue of medical and surgical names. I have to repeat the expression of my old
obligation to Prof. W. A. Ward of Victoria University for invaluable assistance in the
histoncal columns, and to Prof. MacCallum of Sydney University for numerous
suggestions in reference to old English and French Literature.

In this Edition every date has been, as far as possible, verified by the comparison
of various and often conflicting authorities — e.g., a single author has in some cases
assigned to him half-a-dozen different dates ; and some names — as those of Jacob
Boehmen and Christian Huyghaens — are spelt in almost as many different ways. In
this part of the compilation now, I trust, fairly accurate, I have been assisted by the
careful research of Mr. Robert, and Miss, MacLehose, whose zealous co-operation
makes this edition, in great measure, our joint work. They or I have with regard
to every important event, name, or work, consulted the books -in the annexed
list, assigning on points of dispute, a generally preponderatijjg authority to the tkree
first named.
