"IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES,
IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES, . . . "
k
"it was the age of WISDOM
it was the age of FOOLISHNESS,
it was the epoch of BELIEF
it was the epoch of INCREDULITY,
it was the spring of HOPE, . . .
it was the winter of DESPAIR.
CHARLES DICKENS
DEDICATION
AS EDITOR OF THE YEARBOOK IT IS MY PRIVILEGE TO
CHOOSE THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAD THE MOST SIGNIFI-
CANT IMPACT ON THE GRADUATING CLASS. AFTER MUCH
CONSIDERATION, IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE ACCOMPLISH-
MENTS AND CHARACTER OF MY ENTIRE CLASS, THE
CLASS OF 1982, WON MY RESPECT AND DEEMED THIS
DEDICATION. WE APPRECIATE THE ASSISTANCE WE RE-
CEIVED FROM OUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND FACULTY; HOW-
EVER, IN THE LAST THREE YEARS WE CAME TO RELY MORE
AND MORE ON OURSELVES. TOGETHER WE ENDURED. WE
LEARNED TO LOVE AND ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER —
EVEN DURING THE MOST FRUSTRATING AND DIFFICULT
TIMES. THE STRENGTH WHICH WE OBTAINED FROM ONE
ANOTHER'S CONTINUOUS SUPPORT FORMED THE FOUN-
DATION FOR A GROWING STRENGTH WITHIN OURSELVES.
MAY THE CARE AND THOUGHT PUT INTO EACH PAGE OF
THIS YEARBOOK BE A TESTIMONY TO EACH MEMBER OF
THE CLASS OF 1982.
ANNE MEYERS,
EDITOR
DEANS MESSAGE
THE SCHOOL OF PHARMACY HAS BEEN HOUSED IN MANY
DIFFERENT BUILDINGS HERE IN BALTIMORE SINCE CLASSES
WERE FIRST BEGUN IN 1841. MOST RECENTLY ITS OFFICES,
LABORATORIES, AND CLASSROOMS WERE TO BE FOUND IN A
SERIES OF BUILDINGS ALONG LOMBARD AND GREENE
STREETS, AND THE CLASS OF 1982 IS THE LAST CLASS TO
HAVE ROAMED THE CORRIDORS OF THOSE NON-IVY CLAD
STRUCTURES. I'M SURE THAT EACH OF YOU WILL HAVE MANY
LONG LASTING MEMORIES, BOTH GOOD AND BAD, OF THOSE
STUDENT DAYS.
OUR NEW BUILDING ON PINE STREET WILL HELP PHARMACY
MAINTAIN A STRONG IDENTITY ON THE UMAB CAMPUS, BUT
BRICKS AND MORTAR ARE ONLY A SMALL PART OF OUR CON-
TRIBUTION TO THE PROFESSION. THE INDIVIDUAL GRADUATE
OF OUR PROGRAM IS STILL THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPO-
NENT OF A STRONG PHARMACY PROFESSION IN MARYLAND.
WHILE THE EFFORTS OF YOUR TOTAL CLASS WILL DETERMINE
THE FUTURE STANDARDS OF PRACTICE, THE WORK OF ONE
INDIVIDUAL CAN ACTUALLY HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE
ADVANCEMENT OF PHARMACY. I HOPE THAT EACH OF YOU
TRY TO BE THAT SPECIAL PERSON.

Elder-Ed is a program to educate the elderly about the correct use of their medications.
Students from all three classes are trained to give talks to various groups, such as Senior
Centers and clubs. Elder-Ed members are welcomed at health fairs around the city where they
answer questions and distribute literature. This program has done a great deal to stimulate the
interest of the community in this topic.

The Student Committee on Drug Abuse Education (S.C.O.D.A.E.) serves the
community through it's lectures to various groups and organizations. During the 1981 -
1982 school year 43 programs were presented. Members have spoken to groups as far
away as Frederick and Rockville as well as in Baltimore.
This year the logo of PharmAlert was registered as a trademark for SCODAE'S
quarterly newsletter. Pharmalert is currently being sent to pharmacists, poison centers,
health educators, and drug abuse specialists in Maryland and throughout the nation. It
provides readers with the pharmacology of street drugs and their relevent clinical
characteristics.

PORT WELCOME BOAT BASH
Pharmacy school's first social
event of each year traditionally
is the Port welcome cruise.
This year the Boat Bash was
held on Thursday, September
10, and was enjoyed by over
200 students, faculty, and
friends. The SGA provided
plenty of cold beer and music
by the band, Amber. The
weather was ideal for the
round trip tour of the Baltimore
Harbor.

The bus ride back from Picadilly's night club
Lilly and Abbott hosted excellent dinners
For many years each 4th
year class has traveled to
Indianapolis for a tour of Eli
Lilly's manufacturing plant.
The class raises funds to
pay for their own transpor-
tation, however, once
there, the company pro-
vides generous meals and
the finest hotel suites. This
year our 4th year class in-
cluded a trip to Chicago
where they were guests of
Abbott. The guided tours
filled the daylight hours, but
the nights were for PAR-
TIES!!!
You could even roller skate at Picadilly's!

The Maryland Pharmaceutical Association has been your next door

But unlike your formal academic experience, your involvement with the
M.Ph.A. can continue and grow in the years ahead. The M.Ph.A. is YOUR
Association representing the profession within the state. If you are serious
about progress and concerned about the future of Pharmacy, we urge you to
remain active in the Association. Find out how you can contribute and help
us all determine the course of the profession you are now embarking upon.
You are always welcome to visit the Kelly Memorial Building and share a cup of
