Dedication

To "Coach" and
his staff

Our coaches, with their "feel of
champions, " spurred the Tigers on
to greater things in football when
they took over in 1964 .

The Tigers and Union Kempsville
have grown to new heights and be-
come known and respected as a team
to be "reckoned with" throughout
Tidewater and much of the State in
V . I . A . competition .

We dedicate this, THE 1967
TIGER, to a team of champions .

ADMINISTRATION

Foreword

To all the other classes which follow- -'68, '69, '70 and so on for dec-
ades- -we say, "Farewell and Godspeed."

We, the Class of '67, wish to be remembered through all of those
coming years. Yes, even for a hundred years! And especially do we wish
to remember this, our last year, as students at Union Kempsville.

We wish to remember this year as one brimmed full of fun and activities
and all of the things that make the heart of a school pulsate with Life.

To those who by chance leaf through this candlelight and crimson
TIGER, we hope that you capture some of the warm spirit of this year;
and as you close the covers, reflect with a bit of nostalgia, "that was
the . . .

. . . Spirit of Sixty-Seven"

FACULTY

Art
Department

Mrs. I. C. Wilson

Mr. W. B. Williams

The main objective of the Art Department is to effect the integration of Art
with the total school curriculum . We further aim to provide for the specific
needs of students' interests and aptitudes in order that they may reach their
highest level of achievement .

Music Department

Mrs. Ruby L. Allen

Mr. Roy A. Reid

Music

The Music Department of the Union
Kemps ville High School provides oppor-
tunity for enrichment in the areas of
choral music and band. It also provides
opportunity for community music edu-
cation through its annual spring and
winter concerts .

Business Education Department

>

Mrs. Jean O. Siler

Business education is concerned
with two major aspects of the edu-
cation of youth .

The B. E. Department at U. K.
strives to provide knowledge, atti-
tudes, and nonvocational skills needed
by all persons to be effective in their
personal economics and in their under-
standing of our economic system .

Secondly, the B. E. Department
endeavors to make available vocational
knowledge and skills needed for initial
employment and for advancement in a
business career .

Mrs. Louise H. Reid

32

English Department

The English staff at Union Kempsville is cognizant of the innovations being
made in the English programs throughout the Nation . The teachers of English
remain alerted to take advantage of the newest trends through advanced study,
in-service programs, and state and national conferences.

Our present program is designed to help students improve their quality of
writing, as well as the clarity and accuracy of speech .

The Guidance program is based upon an under-
standing of the community; the needs of the pupils;
the school's facilities and curriculum; and the abili-
ties, interests, experiences and training of the
faculty.

35

Foreign Languages

Mrs. B. M. Patterson
Mrs. B. H. Greene

The learning of a foreign language is assuredly
difficult, but when mixed with dashes of fascinating
customs and understanding of different ways of life,
whether it be south of the border or across the sea,
it is easily accomplished.

36

Industrial Arts Dept.

Mr. A. H. Woodhouse
Industrial Arts

Industrial Arts is instructional shop work which provides all youth with sound educa-
tional experiences that contribute to the satisfaction of their purposes, needs, and wants.

Public secondary education must give every youngster the opportunity to learn to work
with books and materials and to acquire reasonable judgment and some degree of techni-
cal know-how. Industrial Arts serves that purpose.

Philosophy

It is our contention that the mathematics courses taught at
Union Kempsville High School provide a curriculum suitable for
those students who will not go beyond high school, for those who
will go on to college --the average, as well as the academically
talented student.

We believe that our primary function is to train as many
youth as possible for an intelligent, happy, and successful par-
ticipation in today's world. Therefore, we shall use all methods
at our disposal to motivate and challenge the students to per-
form to their greatest capacity .

Studies

The Social Studies Program in the Union-Kempsville High
School has a dynamic role in the school curriculum. It is an
avenue for fostering attitudes, skills, understandings, and
competencies that are so essential to effective everyday liv-
ing. The objectives of our program are to understand the
world wide conflicts resulting from demands for resources;
to understand that there will always be problems but that
there are democratic ways of solving them; to understand the
unending struggle of a proper balance between freedom and
responsibility, to realize the importance of international
relations throughout United States History.

Mrs. J. P. Robinson

The Library exists to make ma-

ing to reach its fall status as the

Lovely Miss Pearline Cherry,
a Senior and honor student, was
chosen Homecoming Queen and
reigned gracefully over the Home-
coming festivities.

At left, Pearline is crowned, "Miss Home-
coming" by the Queen of 1966, Miss Mar-
zelia Neal, as Mr. Boykin, principal, looks
on.

Pearline, always a serious student,
prepares to leave school after a full
day of activities . One of her attributes
is that she always makes a day's work

ORGANIZATIONS

Lambda Chi

HONORARY SOCIETY

The Lambda Chi provides a token of distinction for the high scholastic
achievement and character of our students.

To become a member of the Lambda Chi, one must be above average
in scholarship. One must further be investigated by other members and •
the faculty sponsor. After a potential member has been observed and in-
terviewed by the members he is then initiated into the honor society.

84

Y- Teens

The Y-Teens are the energetic "Miss Lady-likes" of Union Kempsville. This year
they sponsored a Thanksgiving drive to help needy families.

The Y-Teens are most prompt when it comes to lending a helping hand. We tip our
hats to the Y-Teens.

ing students for a job well done.

giving baskets as the photographer captures
their smiles.

Spanish Club

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club fosters the enjoyment of the music, art, and literature of the
Spanish-speaking people, and an appreciation of the contributions of the Spanish to
western civilizations.

"Within the ever narrowing boundaries of the world, it has become evident that the
ability to speak a language fluently, intelligently, and confidently is not only an ad-
mired accomplishment but a definite necessity."

86

Dramatic Club

Drama is life. Master playwrights, brilliant actors, sincere directors, and
unique settings make up drama.

Many students possess dramatic abilities and enjoy dramatic activities. The
Dramatic Club helps these students cultivate a sincere appreciation for the fine
arts of the theater and to enhance their personality growth.

The members of the Dramatic Club of Union Kempsville High School enjoy
their participation in the club's activities as well as their own "inventive"
abilities. "Original playlets" is one of their hobbies.

Future Homemakers of Ameria

These girls are members of an
organization which reaches through-
out the United States and extends
to Puerto Rico and the Virgin
Islands--The Future Homemakers
of America.

As an integral part of the home-
making program, FHA provides
opportunities for students to have
additional experiences in planning
and carrying out activities related
to homemaking.

Industrial Arts
Club

To foster the development of a strong foundation in the skills, knowledges,

The year, 1966-67, will be marked by progress and achievement.

91

Student Council

The Student Council at Union Kempsville High School is an organiza-
tion composed of representatives from each homeroom, and chosen by
their classmates. These student monitors aim to promote citizenship
among the student body, encourage and plan extracurricular student ac-
tivities, and supervise student conduct. The student council is the most
active organization in a school where students and their futures are
fully developed through active participation.

4

Debating Society

Participation in the lively discussions the Debating Society often finds itself
engaged in helps the members become more aware and concerned with the
controversial affairs which affect our nation and encourage the future leaders
to train themselves to weigh facts before passing judgment.

In addition to developing competence in public speaking, debating, also,
more personally, stimulates thinking and provides training in research.

Officers of the Society are President, Donnell Grimstead; Vice President,
Gloria White; Secretary, Linda Felton; Assistant Secretary, Perlean Cherry;
Treasurer, Charles Etheridge; Reporter, Fentrell Carter.

purpose and objectives. They
meet and plan their public ser-
vice activities together.

The Future Teachers of
America and the Xinos give
status to young ladies whose
academic achievements may be
limited, as well as to those per-
sons who have special aptitudes,
attitudes and interests.

served at U.K. at an assembly at
which time Dr. Roy Wood was guest
speaker and Mrs. Reuben Wills,
P.T.A. pres., appeared.

This Club tends to let Girlhood of
our race know that the community is
interested in the welfare of each girl.

lastic Achievement Team Award in order to recognize achievement of superb students,
both in relationship to individual schools and in the whole Tidewater educational com-
munity.

This recognition is given in wide publicity in order to focus attention on the ex-
ceptional pupils and to encourage others toward high scholastic accomplishment.

Art Club

Art training is valuable to those who have special abilities in drawing, painting,
and the varied crafts.

It offers them a pleasant way to spend their leisure time- -a hobby. The realiza-
tion that the basic needs of art today are social, educational and cultural, deepens
our concern for the integrity of the student as an individual or personality in how to
adjust himself happily. Our foremost purpose is to provide activities in terms of the
students' interests in order for them to express themselves.

Industrial Co-operative Trainees

I. C. T. CLUB

Building skills and character is the goal of the vocational training clubs. The mem-
bers of the club believe in and live by their pledge:
I SHALL endeavor to become an employee whose services will be recognized by my

employer as being of the highest caliber.
I SHALL respect the rights of my employer, my teacher, and fellow students.
I SHALL honor and respect my vocation in such a way as to bring good repute to my-
self as well as to others; that any resulting reward will be built upon a solid
foundation of work and service.
I SHALL make every effort to uphold the ideals of my training.
