Silver Lake Regional High School Library
EDITOR'S
Front L-R: Barbara Sewall (Layout Editor), Nancy Brooks (Art Editor), Peter Sirrico (Sports Editor), Debbie Cobb (Art Editor), Kathy
Tkaczuk (Layout Editor).
Back L-R: Jim Wallace (Business Editor), Jeanette Lopes (Layout Editor), Jean Axford (Editor-in-Chief), Patti Finney (Assistant Editor-in-
Chief), Mary Fogarty (Business Editor), Tom Girouard (Sports Editor).
Each year the editor of our Torch writes of the pressures and problems involved in putting a yearbook
together. The Torch '17 staff has had its share of last minute layouts and deadlines, along with trying to
keep our book unified. Our class is the first to graduate from two different campuses. We realized that our
task wouldn't be easy but we've done our best to devise a book that represents our class as a whole,
regardless of the obvious separations.
We extend our most sincere thanks to Mr. Govoni, Mrs. Churchill, Mr. Bennett, Mr. Depoto, and our
photographers from Dodge-Murphy, without whose time and effort our ideas could not have been executed.
Jean Axford, Editor-in-Chief
WE WOULD LIKE
TO REMEMBER . . .
MELODY NILSON
LOOK TO THIS DAY
For it is Life
The very life of life. In its brief course lies
all the verities and realities of existence,
the bliss of grov^th, the splender of action,
the glory of povy^er.
For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow
is only a vision
But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a
dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a
vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day.
In Memory of James Linehan
DEDICATION
Donald Randall, a lep.end in his own time, friend, teacher, entertainer and
educator . . .
As students we meet a p.reat many teachers, each with his own style, varying
in manv aspects, but for most of us a teacher such as Mr. Randall comes but once
in a lifetime. We remember him for his wit in class, the way he can nike a theorem
seem interesting, and also for his dedication to his ideals and to better educa-
tion. As his students recall him*
His zest for life is unreal.
In teaching he used his own style.
He would yell, he would stomp, he would dance, he would sing.
And be teaching you Math all the while.
Of angles and planes he would lecture.
In bearskin coats he would muffle.
Ceometrv's easily forgotten, of course,
But remember "The Halifax Shuffle.''
His character sure is amazing.
His wit is the sharpest around.
For the theorems and laws of geometry's scope.
Never met with an expert so sound.
-J.C.
For all the fun, all the hours of enjoyable classtime, the ideals fondly
instilled, we, the class of 77, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Randall, whom we
knov7 will live on and on long after we've gone.
-J. A.

Principal's Message
The Torch is a living monument to the stress that is
placed on the individual at Silver Lake. Your yearbook
staff has designed this book to help you remember the
excellent opportunities afforded you, the student.
Silver Lake is now a two-campus facility . It is your school.
It is what you want it to be. The course offerings and
the extra-curricular programs are developed and planned
to meet your individual needs.
I extend to the "Class of '77" a sincere note of
congratulation. May you always reflect your educational
background in all of your future endeavors.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Albert F. Argenziano

Life's Path
Come and walk life's path with
me I'm scared to go alone
We'll walk, We'll run. We'll
cry; along the roads of stone
And when a painful day does
decide to end We'll talk of
when the morning breaks and
how we'll try again Life's
path is not an easy one with
all it's detour signs But with
each others help we'll easily
make up our minds And when
lives path decides to end and
we lay down to die We will not
shed one tear my love; we will
not want to cry For we will
know we proved ourselves; and
we'll stay hand in hand When
they lift our soul so very
high to the so called promise

I Recall
I recall a little girl
I met so long ago
when how to jump a moving rope
was all you had to know
when abc and 123
were new and hard to learn
when fun was catching ladybugs
and watching fire burn
and 1 recall her teacher then
she seemed to be so cool
"Close your mouth and wash your hands
and mind the golden rule"
but all in all life was good
and days were warm and free
and even now, we still are friends
that little girl and me.

Whispers and shadows
seem to convey one's deepest
thoughts
within another's soul
with the utmost of voracity and
sincerity
not tangible but consisting of
vague impressions and surrealism.

is not of black and white,
merely different shades of gray.
Whispers can even add a tinge of
color.

From tomorrow on, I shall be sad
From tomorrow on!
Today I shall be gay.
What is the use of sadness — tell me that? —
Because these evil winds begin to blow?
Why should I grieve for tomorrow — today?
Tomorrow may be so good, so sunny.
Tomorrow the sun may shine for us again,
We will no longer need to be sad.
From tomorrow on, I shall be sad,
From tomorrow on!
Not today; no, today I will be glad,
And every day, no matter how bitter it be,
I shall say;
From tomorrow on, I shall be sad,
Not today!

My bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say good-bye
but the dawn is breaking, it's early morn
the taxi's waiting, he's blowing his horn,
already I'm so lonesome I could cry.
so kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you'll wait for me
hold me like you'll never let me go

Do you remember?
Once there was you and I
we were so happy then,
we thought the days would never end,
do you remember?
we were young, filled with hopes, life was within my grasp when I
reached out and touched you.
do you remember?
You told me you loved me and we talked and dreamed of love and
life to come
do you remember?
Those days, once so dear, seem a thousand worlds ago
but I remember.

We are the seeds
our parents have sown
With a little wish
and hope that we grow
With a little love,
and a little care,
a little kindness
Given to that child from above.
A little guidance
a little trouble
and so much understanding
and now we've grown
with the help of God's love.

A Conversation
When you and I are talking together,
I hear words,
I hear the sound of your voice.
I see your eyes thinking, questioning,
understanding.
I see the way you sit and stand and
move.
I think about what you say.
I wonder if you are saying what you
mean.
I wonder what you want me to say to
you.
When you and I are talking together
I see,
I hear,
I think
Much more than I could ever tell you.

Freedom
To be totally free of ties
That restrict the way you live.
To wander aimlessly
To find what you can give.
Traveling from town to town
To see all there is to see
Remaining a faithful loner
with no responsibility.
But in your search for reality
You merely find seclusion
You lose sight of your lofty goal
and become tormented by delusion.
You chased the wind and
raced the tide and
lived in purity,
but now you see
you can't be free,
without security.
Some people search for rainbows.
Others grasp at straws
The life that's best is the one that fits
With it there are no flaws.

my mind sounds so silent at night,
on lonely nights.
I know you now,
more than I ever knew you before,
unfortunately now, I love you more,
oh, I could cry at being deceived,
no, you were the one deceived
— by your own heart,
how sad, so very sad.
we were both searching
in each other's faces for something,
something very, very far away,
never knowing exactly what it was
and never finding it.
but you won't find it in her face,
you'll move on soon
and I'll know how she'll feel
because a girl can find
what she's looking for in your face,
because in your arms
a girl can feel like she has the
whole world.
I could almost swear
that for a moment there,
(once while you were caught in my

(and once when you were looking

that you could forget how slow

that you'll never find.

r
re 1985, if, God willing, I'm
still alive; I may have put
fame into my life, or just be
a contented wife. Right now,
looking into my mind, I think
this is the "me" you'll find;
Perhaps a leader in the world
of science, or frustrated with
a new appliance. Delving into
fields unknown, or sewing
socks as yet unsewn. Finding
a cure for a strange disease,
or scrubbing floors on my
hands and knees. An actress
who is loved by all, or glad
that Junior hit the ball.
Marching in a protest riot,
or thankful that the kids are
quiet. The author of a best
selling book, or teaching my
daughter how to cook. An art-
ist of world renown, or
making sure the hamburg weighs
a pound. Researching a miracle
drug, or beating the dirt from
the rug. Helping people in times
of strife, or learning to be
a better wife. A scientist
working aboard Calypso, or
kissing a tiny stubbed and hurt-
ing toe. Acclaimed as a great
scupltor, or selling Avon
door to door. An archaeologist
digging lost cities, or giving
away the largest litter of
kitties. Wealthy, with more
than one racy car, or putting
preserves into a jar. Exploring
and documenting the mysterious
sea, or helping to decorate the
Christmas tree. Maybe I'll
get to do them all, that
certainly would be a ball. Well,
wherever I do happen to be, I'll
be, living and loving and being
me.
DGB
"Beneath the waves there are many
dominions yet to be visited and
kingdoms to be discovered, and he
who venturously brings up from the
abyss enough of their inhabitants to
display the physiognomy of the country,
will taste that cup of delight, the
sweetness of whose draught only those
who have made a discovery know."
Edward Forbes, "Natural History of
European Seas," 1859
ou may give them your love but
not your thoughts, for they have
their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but
not their souls, for their souls
dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even
in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them liKe
you. For life goes not back-
ward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your
children as living arrows are
sent forth

Tomorrow's dream
is not my dream:
It comes too late
and I can't wait.

Three passions simple, but
overwhelmingly strong have
governed my life; the longing
for love; the search for know-
ledge; and unbearable pity of
the suffering of mankind.
Bertrand Russell
Humor is the saving sense:
If I did not laugh I would die

And when I die
don't shed a tear.
The world will know
That I've been here.
