The Committee of Evergreen Cemetery, at the close of
their term of service, make the following brief
REPORT:
Since the consecration of the Cemetery, one hundred and
sixteen Lots have been sold, and the amount, eighteen hun-
dred and twenty-six dollars (§1826) collected and paid into
the Treasury. A Gateway with a suitable inscription has
been erected at the entrance, and a border near the Gateway,
each side of the main Avenue, has been made and set with
shrubbery and perennial plants.
The Avenues have been widened, some of the hills lowered
and valleys filled, and many large stones removed.
A handsome Granite Front has been built to the Receiving
Tomb, which is also otherwise improved.
A Well has been dag and stoned, and a Pump placed
19
therein, yielding a supply of excellent water. A Building has
been erected, with an open cover over the Wei], and with
seats for Visitors ; the Building affords also a safe place for
the Bier, Tools, and other articles of use, needed at the
Cemetery.
There are other improvements much needed ; the sides of
the Avenues should be sodded, and more of the high places
lowered and valleys filled.
There is a large rock or ledge, which crosses the Eastern
Avenue about half way in the Cemetery, which prevents the
water from draining from a considerable number of Lots al-
ready taken. In the early part of the season water is met by
digging two or three feet. This could be remedied by lowering
the ledge, and building a Culvert under the Avenue.
Ninety-seven of the Lots have been graded and corner
bounds set, sixty-two of which are inclosed by an Iron Fence,
eight by a Hedge of Evergreen, two by Chains, and twenty-
five with corner bounds but not inclosed, and the Committee
regret to say that there are nineteen Lots of the number sold
which have no bound marks. Most of these were purchased
at auction soon after the consecration of the Cemetery in 1850,
by citizens abundantly able. This ought not so to be, and the
Committee trust this gentle hint will induce all who have not
so done, as soon as the Spring opens, to comply with the
Rules and Regulations adopted by the Town.
