REPORT

OF THE

COMMITTEE OF EVERGREEN CEMETERY.

Since the last report of the Committee in 1860, twenty lots have
been prepared and sold, for which the additional sum of three hun-
dred dollars has been collected and paid into the Treasury, making
in all one hundred and thirty-six lots sold.

A strip of land designed for public use has been dug over and
prepared for interments, and a grave can now be dug in a much
smaller space, and at less expense than heretofore.

The avenues and borders have been kept in good condition, and
in many respects very much improved, but there are other and im-
portant improvements needed.

A large rock or ledge which crosses the Eastern Avenue, half
way in the Cemetery, preventing a large number of lots sold from
draining, ought to be removed, for which purpose an appropriation
should be made.

Several monuments and fences of iron or stone have been added
since 1860, and a large proportion of the lots where interments have
been made are kept in good condition, but there are other lots very
much or entirely neglected, to the mortification of the owners of
adjoining lots, to visitors, as well as the Committee.

There arc still some twelve lots purchased at the first sale in
1850, which remain precisely as when purchased, and have no
bound-marks. The Committee suggest whether the Town ought not
to cause the owners of these lots to comply with the important regu-
lation adopted by the Town, by placing bound-marks of iron or stone
at the corners, or surrender the lot to the Town.

Five lots have been dug over, filled, and graded, and remain
unsold. There are also twenty-three stub-stones unsold.

In conclusion, the Committee have to say that there is a visible,
growing interest in the Cemetery, and the visitors are many,

21

strangers as well as our own citizens. The Committee confidently
trust that this sacred spot, which can be made so beautiful, and is to
be the last resting-place of so many of its inhabitants, will continue
to receive the liberal and fostering care of the Town.
