Family and education
are two recurrent tiiemes
that resonate through
Will and Jo Holcombe's lives.
Through the Will & Jo
Holcombe Institute for
Teaching and Learning
Excellence, they leave a
legacy that celebrates both.

While Will, who in
1987 became BCC's fourth
president, concentrated
on a career in Florida's
community colleges, Jo
was most comfortable in
secondary education. She
taught more than 30 years
in Alachua, Brevard and
Broward high schools. At
Boyd Anderson High School,
she taught Theory of Knowledge
and French in the school's
International Baccalaureate
program. She retired in June
2002 after positively affecting
thousands of Florida students,
one life at a time. Their careers
complimented each other's,
Will said.

"There was a trade-off
there," he said. "As my scope
got broader, she always reminded
me of the practicality and real-life
issues of education. She helped
keep me well-grounded.

"I think I helped her in
she's always helped people
raise their aspirations to attend
college. She knows what programs
are there for them and she's

done a lot of connecting in a
very personal way."

Will Holcombe guided BCC
through an intense period of
growth and diversification and
leaves behind a college with
a reputation for excellence,
community leadership and the
hunger to achieve even greater
heights. During his tenure:

• BCC increased the number
of full-time faculty and staff
by 55 percent.

• The college budget increased
from $47 million to $106 million.

• The number of instructional
sites increased from five to
eight, with two more centers
in progress.

• The number of foreign students
increased more than 300 percent.

• The number of students

enrolled in the university-
transfer program has
doubled.
• The BCC Foundation's
assets increased from
$3 million to more
than $50 million.
BCC, under Will's
leadership, has become a
nationally recognized leader
in the area of strategic
partnerships, international
education, service learning
and distance learning. BCC
has grown to worldwide
prominence in the field
of international education,
through its worldwide
partnerships and its role
in the College Consortium for
International Studies.

Within their family.
Will and Jo shared their love
of education and that love and
influence has become evident in
their children's lives, too. Megan
works for The College of William
and Mary in Virginia; Ben is a
Naval flight instructor in
Pennsylvania and Joe and his
wife Vivian are both public
school teachers in Florida.

Will and Jo dedicated their
careers to education, and the
Will & Jo Holcombe Institute for
Teaching and Learning Excellence
at Broward Community College
will be their legacy to the college
and the community they served
with passion and distinction.

Dear Willis:

It is my great pleasure to contribute to a much deserved celebration of your
accomplishments in higher education.

You have been a trailblazer on behalf of students, tireless in making Broward
Community College responsive to their needs. You connected the institution to
the life of the community, making the community college a center of growth
for the entire community.

I know you believed in the potential of each student and strived to provide a
doorway of opportunity for all of them. You also believed in this wonderful
American institution of the community college, and demonstrated its value for
all to see.

You leave a legacy of opportunity and student success. You broadened
horizons and helped people to grow. A rich legacy, indeed.

Sincerely,

Dr. Willis Holcombe:

It has been my pleasure to know and work with you since our days at UF. It's
been a special pleasure to have had the opportunity to work as your colleague
here in South Florida.

During your career, you have made significant contributions to the Florida
Community College System and particularly to Broward Community College.
Your leadership as President has caused Broward Community College to be
recognized within the state and nation as a quality academic institution.

Will, my primary reason for submitting this letter for your portfolio is to make
a confession. You should know that confessing is something that I am not
particularly good at because I am not of a religious persuasion that requires a
lot of confessing... you see, I am Baptist. My confession is... that it has been my
goal since day one to have PBCC obtain the same reputation for excellence as
you have been successful in doing at Broward Community College. You have
made BCC a special place for professionals to work and, more Importantly, a
place for students to grow academically. We are getting there!

I know that you will enjoy your promotion to retirement and want you to invite
me to a game of golf when you have a full day to play nine holes. Just kidding
- I am speeding up my game!

Best wishes,
