EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Several years ago many of us were Intrigued by
the best-selling book. In Search of Excellence, for it
detailed ways in which some of our major corpora-
tions improved the quality of their products and
services to enable them to rise to the top of their
respective industries.

This Annual Report is about our own "search
for excellence" as we continue to strive for and move
toward inclusion in that select group of the nation's
best, small, liberal arts colleges.

Academic Excellence

Obviously, one of our major goals is academic
excellence. But just what does that mean? Institu-
tional academic excellence, in its root meaning,
goes well beyond assembling an outstanding fac-
ulty, building a great library or producing graduates
who become noted scholars. The word, "aca-
demic", in its original meaning, refers to the Pla-
tonic school of philosophy (more precisely to one of
Plato's students, Academian) and to the concept of
academic excellence as preparation for the
office of the citizen — for dedicated, ethical
leadership and enlightened, enthusiastic fol-
lowership as these relate to the larger com-
munity.

A second important dimension of institutional
academic excellence, and perhaps a more common
definition, is the attainment of high standards
in the composition and delivery of an educa-
tional program rooted in the liberal arts.

There is yet a third aspect of academic ex-
cellence. Simply put, it is the element of vision.
Students, educated in an institution that claims ac-
ademic excellence, are prepared not only to cope
with the known problems of today but the unknown
problems of tomorrow as well. That process of devel-
oping minds with the capacity for keen analysis and
clear communication is what the liberal arts are all
about. An educational program that prepares for
the present and not the future is obsolete.

During the past year we have given our best
efforts at Lebanon Valley to achieve academic excel-
lence in each of these three dimensions . . .

The Undergraduate Leadership Program,

for example, is now firmly in place. Wagner House,
formerly our guest quarters on campus, has now
become the Leadership Studies Center, giving a
physical focus to this important new thrust. A year
of testing and revision of the program was con-
cluded by a highly successful faculty workshop on
the topic of leadership and has led to a greatly re-
fined effort that is rapidly becoming a model for
other institutions across the land.

Our excellent general education program,
the expanded efforts to teach writing across
the curriculum, and the broad use of com-
puters by students and faculty in all disciplines are
examples of our commitment to the liberal arts and
our concomitant recognition of the realities of the
new technology ... To support our vision of what
today's students require in terms of functional
knowledge of computers, for example, we com-
pleted, in 1986-87, the dramatic upgrading of our
computer capabilities. Through the very generous
support of the Whitaker Foundation of Harrisburg,
the College purchased a new state-of-the-art VAX
central computer dedicated solely to academic use,
and a new PDP 11-84 computer for non-academic
use. At the same time, it was deemed important to
increase the number of personal computers for stu-
dent and faculty use in laboratories and for word
processing and, as a result, over 100 personal com-
puters are now available on campus. We know of no
college that has done more to facilitate computer
competence among its students, faculty and staff.

Although we think of Lebanon Valley College as
a largely residential, undergraduate college educat-
ing traditional youth, our mission statement re-
minds us that we are dedicated to helping persons
of all ages to lead more satisfying and meaningful
lives and to become more successful in their per-
sonal careers. Toward that end, our Program for
Adult Learners continues to expand its offerings,
increase its enrollments and serve an ever widening
geographical area. At the same time, our Leader-
ship Development Institute is broadening its market
to include the not-for-profit sector in its efforts to
help middle managers and first-line supervisors
carry out their leadership responsibilities more ef-
fectively.

On the other end of the age continuum, the Spe-
cial Programs division has greatly expanded the
number of its summer programs for high school
students. "Summer time" at Lebanon Valley is
hardly a time when the "living is easy" as the popu-
lar song goes. It is a time of great activity when
many fine young people become acquainted with
our outstanding institution through a wide variety
of camps and conferences. It is a time also when

LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE

those who are college bound can begin to form an
attachment to LVC.

Aside from internal audits of our overall educa-
tional enterprise, we are grateful for meaningful ex-
ternal audits as well. In early summer, the Middle
States Association notified us that they had ac-
cepted and approved our Periodic Review Report
submitted in April by a committee of the faculty.
This action recognizes the continuing standard of
excellence which LVC sets for itself — and attains.

The Financial Underpinnings —
The Foundations of Excellence

Worthy institutional mission statements and
challenging educational goals cannot be realized
without adequate financial support. Competent fac-
ulty and staff cannot be retained without equitable
compensation. The refurbishment of an aging cam-
pus and the construction of needed, new facilities
require the constant influx of new dollars for capital
improvements. In short, our search for excellence
leads us inevitably to the critical importance of a
sound financial base.

In large part because of your generosity, LVC,
during 1986-87, has made remarkable progress in
strengthening its already firm financial base. Let
me cite some specific developments of the past year:
pre-campaign pledges and cash of over 2.7 million
dollars toward The 125th Anniversary Cam-
paign; additionally, oversubscription of the
$1,000,000 Gifts and Grants annual goal by
$112,000; retirement of all indebtedness on dormi-
tories, the dining hall and the student union build-
ing (i.e. the paying off of all HUD System Bonds in
the amount of approximately 2.7 million dollars);
expansion of our campus by 260 acres (120 acres
adjacent to the campus.and a 140 acre gift from Dr.
William Martin '18 and Mrs. Edna Dowland Martin,
in the form of a lovely environmental studies park
near Gettysburg); and a third year of our operations
budget being "in the black."

The credit for the excellent financial year at the
College must be shared by many: First, by those
faculty and staff colleagues who worked so hard at
holding down expenditures while increasing reve-
nues in their operating divisions; Second, by the
hard working personnel of the Institutional Ad-
vancement office who provided the staff support for
both the Annual Fund for Lebanon Valley College
and for the highly successful early phases of the
125th Anniversary Campaign. In this connec-
tion a special thank you is due Richard Jolly who
served during the year as both the resident man-
ager for the new 125th Anniversary Campaign
and as Acting Vice President of the Office of Institu-
tional Advancement.

Third, to our dedicated Board members, loyal
alumni and friends of the College who have been
responsible for most of the actual fund raising dur-

ing the year with special gratitude to our leading
volunteers such as: Elaine Hackman '52, our hard-
working Chairperson of the 1986-87 Annual Fund;
Charles W. Wolfe '44 whose inspiration and knowl-
edge has been and is so important to the success
of The 125th Anniversary Campaign; and Ed-
ward H. Arnold and Harlan R. Wengert who have
labored with great diligence and striking success as
Co-Chairmen of the TYustee & Major Gifts Division
of the Campaign.

Fourth, I must say that the College would not
be in its present state of financial health were it not
for the good stewardship of the members of the
Finance and Investments Committee. Meeting
monthly under the devoted leadership of Harlan
Wengert, this hard-working Committee spends
countless hours during the year making certain
that the financial foundations for academic excel-
lence are always in place.

Fifth, the diligent and effective work of our
enrollment management team (admissions office)
must also be cited as a major contributor to our
financial success simply because income from stu-
dent tuition is by far the largest single source of
funds in our annual operating budget. This year the
income generated by a substantial increase in new
student enrollments was a major ingredient in our
ability to balance the budget.

Sixth, the kind contributors of large amounts
and small are obviously also critically important to
our strengthening financial position. Our gratitude
for individual gifts is expressed in another section of
this report so I will not expand on this matter here
other than to emphasize our sincere appreciation.

Cultivating the drive for excellence

Several recent, highly regarded studies of col-
lege life point out that extracurricular activities can
be as important as formal studies in preparing stu-
dents for a satisfying life of service and for voca-
tional success . . . Educational philosophers from
Plato to the present have pleaded for a tripartite
development of self — with balanced attention to
mind, body and spirit.

We believe LVC is providing students with an
outstanding academic program, as suggested
above, and that opportunities for spiritual growth
abound in the classroom and in a myriad of reli-
gious activities regularly taking place on campus.
Moreover the opportunity to expand intellectual
capabilities and to become "competent givers" is
further enhanced through the unusual number of
professional, musical, theatrical, social, religious,
fraternal and service organizations urgently seek-
ing and attaining widespread student involvement.

Despite all of these very positive features of
an LVC education, however, we have been acutely
aware recently that we were not providing adequate
resources for the pursuit of physical fitness through
individual development and intramural sports. And

EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

we felt that this was particularly important for a
college that takes seriously its need to inculcate in
its students a passion for excellence. That passion
which can come for some from singular success in
the classroom, practice studio, performing stage or
laboratory is generated for others on the playing
field, in the gym or in the swimming pool. And that
drive for excellence in sports is not necessarily the
product of competition only at the varsity level! It
can be effectively cultivated in much less visible
sporting activities as well.

Indeed, a rising tide of interest in participation
in intramural sports and personal physical condi-
tioning, which was felt throughout the campus, led
to a request to the Board of TVustees to consider
building a new sports center. The entire LVC com-
munity was elated to learn of the Board's early af-
firmative response. The decision, in the fall of 1986,
to build a $3,000,000 sports center adjacent to the
football field brought a new sense of excitement, joy
and pride to the entire campus — excitement over
what this new sports center would mean to our over-
all educational program, joy over the specific facili-
ties to be included in the new edifice and pride in a
Board that would act so positively and so rapidly to
meet the needs of LVC students.

A pace-setting gift by Edward H. Arnold and a
second major gift by Harlan R. Wengert and mem-
bers of his family so encouraged the Board's Fi-
nance and Investments Committee that they recom-
mended to the full Board the construction of the
Edward H. Arnold Sports Center as soon as pos-
sible. The Board agreed and on April 21st ground
was broken for a magnificent new structure which
will include a competition-sized swimming pool,
four basketball/indoor tennis/volleyball courts (de-
signed so that they can be used for any of these
purposes) racquetball courts (with conversion
equipment for the new sport, Walley-Ball), locker
rooms and external restroom facilities for spectators
attending various sporting events at Arnold Field.
Incredibly, if present plans are realized, we will oc-
cupy the building in late December of this year or
early January of 1988!

We firmly believe our new Arnold Sports Center
will indeed help encourage a passion for excellence
in some of our students just as the Garber Science
Center and the Blair Music Hall have aided this de-
velopment in others. But a passion for excellence is
not always generated from personal achievement
alone. For some it comes from the inspiration of
lives of individuals who have been successful in
areas of a student's vocational interest — in other
words, from role models.

When the College named Roy McMindes, Leba-
non area business and community leader, as the
seventh recipient of its Founder's Day Award and
brought former Governor and U.S. Senator Gaylord
Nelson to speak on the occasion of that award, it
provided two role models worthy of emulation by

students aspiring to successful careers in either
public service or the private sector. A similar chal-
lenge to "reach for the stars" was eloquently pre-
sented by computer science pioneer Admiral Grace
Hopper, when she addressed the Seniors during the
121st commencement exercises in May.

Excellence and Leadership and Excellence in
Leadership

It has been a great year! And virtually every
person who reads these words is responsible for this
very positive and promising year-end report.
Alumni, Board members. Churchmen and Women,
Faculty and Staff, Friends of the College, Stu-
dents — you have all been good and faithful advo-
cates and supporters of a cause whose importance
can not be overemphasized— the preparation of
men and women who will go forth to preserve and
protect those values we hold most dear.

You have supported our new emphasis on
leadership and in pursuit of that goal you have
demanded excellence. In so doing you have
demonstrated what excellence in leadership
is all about. Lebanon Valley College has great
adventures and high attainment in store for it and
who is to say what role the year 1986-87 will have
to play in its ultimate destiny. As 1 write my fourth
and final Annual Report, I can only say that of all
my memories, I cherish the time I was given to
spend with you the most — particularly this exciting
year of 1986-87. Your generosity in providing the
funds to endow a Leadership Scholarship in my
name was the most thoughtful, kind, and deeply
appreciated act I have ever experienced. You have
showered Connie and me with kindness and ex-
pressed your thoughtful concern and affection in a
hundred wonderful ways. It is impossible for us to
express adequately our heartfelt gratitude and it is
particularly difficult because we feel so deeply that
you, the LVC family, have given to us during these
years far more than we can ever repay. But be
assured that through our continuing friendship and
our support of LVC, we will surely try! That you can
count on!

Oh, thank me not for some small fire, lit

Yours, the good works, no gift of mine
You gave me love, I but returned it
Whatever was and shall be thine.

The Arthur L. Peterson Leadership
Scholarship was announced at a testimonial
dinner held in President Peterson's honor on
July 13 at the College.

Over $29,000 in contributions from TVus-
tees. faculty, administration, alumni, and
friends made the Peterson scholarship pos-
sible.

The scholarship will be awarded annually
to a junior who best exemplifies the qualities of
leadership, scholarship, and caring concern
for others which President Peterson himself
represents, and which he sought to encourage
through LVC's Leadership Initiative. An-
nouncement of the award will be made at the
Honors Program held In the spring.

EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

INSTITUTIONAL
ADVANCEMENT: SHAPING
THE FUTURE

The administrative division known as "Institu-
tional Advancement" includes the offices of devel-
opment, alumni relations/parents programs, and
communications. The professional staff numbers
eight:

Victor R. Zack, Jr., Vice President for Institu-
tional Advancement: M. Steven Bortner, Director of
the Annual Fund: Marilyn A. Weister, Director of
Communications; John B. Deamer, Assistant Direc-
tor of Communications: Dawn T. Greene, Publica-
tions Specialist: and Timothy M. Ebersole, Sports
Information Director. The positions of Director of
Alumni Relations and Parents Programs and Direc-
tor of Development are vacant at the present time.

The focus of Institutional Advancement is com-
munity relations. To ensure the understanding and
confidence of alumni and friends, the staff accepts
and embraces the belief that an informed public is a
supportive public. To foster this awareness, the staff
strives to: 1) establish the identity of Lebanon Valley
College: 2) promote a clear perception of the Col-
lege's mission and priorities to the public; and 3)
Increase support in dollars, enrollment, and aware-
ness.

The DEVELOPMENT office has a primary re-
sponsibility for fund raising. This includes annual,
capital, and planned giving support, either re-
stricted or unrestricted, from the entire constitu-
ency of LVC. Appeals for gifts and grants to support
the educational programs and projects at LVC are
directed to alumni, friends, businesses, organiza-
tions, and foundations. The income goal for 1987-
88 is $1.1 million.

ALUMNI RELATIONS AND PARENTS PRO-
GRAMS help to advance LVC by cultivating alumni
and friends to serve the College and by cultivating
the College to serve alumni and friends. Our alumni
in particular have always been and will continue to
be the primary audience with whom positive rela-
tions must occur and from whom support must be
obtained.

The office of COMMUNICATIONS is also vital to
the College's effective Institutional Advancement
program. Nothing is more important to a college
than what it says about itself and the quality of this
presentation. The objective of the communications
office is to convey a cohesive, coherent image of the
College to the public through printed material and
the electronic media.

The HONOR ROLL OF DONORS, which is the
purpose of this issue of The Valley magazine, is a
result of the integrated efforts of the Institutional
Advancement staff and is our thanks to those of you
who have provided support and encouragement to
Lebanon Valley College in 1986-87. With your gen-
erosity, LVC is strong — and growing stronger!

current operations. These gifts are the "funds we
live by" in contrast to restricted gifts and grants
which are the "funds we grow by."

The Annual Fund for Lebanon Valley College
underwrites educational expenses which would
otherwise be passed on to students in the form of
tuition increases. Income from the Annual Fund en-
ables the TVustees, administration and faculty to
implement new educational programs for our stu-
dents and to enhance established ones. Money is
spent where it produces a maximum return on your
investment at the time.

Examples of programs which you supported
last year with unrestricted gifts include: financial
aid, leadership studies, student internships, lec-
tureships, faculty development, laboratory equip-
ment, convocations, concerts, religious programs,
athletics, and campus beautification.

Few institutions can survive or flourish without
a substantial number of supporters. Such a follow-
ing helps to stimulate enrollment, promote a strong
reputation, and identify leadership donors.

Large gifts from individuals, particularly be-
quests, have rarely come from those who have not
had a long and positive history of annually sup-
porting the College. Corporations and foundations
regularly examine the percentage of participation
among the constituency before their grants are
made. Last year, Lebanon Valley College performed
above the national average when 22% of you re-
sponded favorably to our earnest appeal.

Donor Clubs are an integral part of the Annual
Fund for Lebanon Valley College. They suggest
levels of giving which we consider particularly
meaningful in today's economy. Naturally, all
ranges of gifts are essential to the success of our

will make LVC one of

program, and we hope you
your top giving priorities.

After much research and discussion. Donor
Clubs have been renamed and established at contri-
bution levels which reflect the most consistent
ranges of past giving. We hope you will be chal-
lenged to reach a higher club to enable the College
to maintain its excellence in education.

Donor Clubs

FIVE FOUNDERS SOCIETY

$4,500 and above

In February 1866, Rudolph Herr, George A.
Mark, Jr., Rev. L. W. Craumer, John H. Kinsports,
and George W. Hoverter purchased Annville Acad-
emy for $4,500 and designated the building to be-
come Lebanon Valley College. Just as the philan-
thropy of our five founders began our enduring
institution of higher learning, so does the generos-
ity of members of this Society ensure its perpetua-
tion.

THOMAS RHYS VICKROY SOCIETY

$l,000-$4,499

The wisdom and zeal of our first President, to-
gether with his personal financial support, enabled
our young College to prosper and to grow during
its critical formative years. Those today who share
the vision and commitment of our first President
strengthen further the bond he created.

PRESIDENTS COUNCIL

Individuals who become members of either of
the above two Societies in the Annual Fund for
Lebanon Valley College indicate a special interest
in the well-being of the institution and are called
upon from time to time for their expertise and ad-
vice. These members also enjoy the fellowship of
each other's company at selected events.

SOCIETY OF 1866

$600-$999

Students were first welcomed to the College on
May 7, 1866. The official seal on that day contained
the motto, "Knowledge is Power." As a timeless al-
truism, our contributors embrace this belief which
still permeates our philosophy of education.

CHARTER CLUB

$200-$599

The 1867 Charter of Lebanon Valley College
directs that the founders shall "establish and main-
tain forever an institution of learning of high grade."
Those who support this mandate bring excellence
to the educational experience of the young men and
women currently enrolled.

EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

EMERITI CLUB*

$125-$199

The leadership of the College's long-time and
loyal contributors has served as a positive example
for others to follow.

*This Club, reserved for selected donors age 65
years or older, will no longer be continued because
determination of age and eligibility is difficult and
subject to error.

7b introduce the Donor Clubs
which will carry us to our 125th an-
niversary year in 1991 and beyond,
our new titles are being applied to
last year's gifts. The following rec-
ognition of 1986-87 donors to the
Annual Fund for Lebanon Valley
College (unrestricted giving) places
Individuals in the appropriate sym-
bolic clubs.

1986-87 PHONATHON
You Made a Difference

The 1986-87 Phonathon, headed by Drew Wil-
liams '87, raised over $86,000 for the Annual Fund
for Lebanon Valley College. Drew, an English major
from New Providence, PA, served as student intern,
organizing and supervising students, alumni, fac-
ulty and staff.

Among the 118 student callers were the follow-
ing who received awards for their outstanding ef-
forts: Julie Matthews, Brian Luckenbill, and
Charles Rusconi.

The five-week fall phonathon and one-week
spring phonathon achieved a total pledge of
$67,630 from 1,169 alumni, friends, and parents.
Additional funds from matching gift companies in-
creased the total to $86, 129.

Thank you to all, both callers and contributors,
who participated in the success of the 1986-87
phonathon. You have helped make a difference at
Lebanon Valley College!

William J. McGill,
Acting President and
Dean of Faculty

Dr. William J. M cGill is
Acting President

Though he has been Dean of the Faculty since
last August, Dean McGill recently agreed to wear
two hats for LVC. He will serve as Acting President
until the Search Committee completes its work later
this year. The committee was formed when Dr.
Arthur L. Peterson announced that his early retire-
ment for medical reasons would take effect in July.

During the convocation ceremony in Septem-
ber, "President-Dean" McGill delighted the audi-
ence by wearing a double-sided baseball cap (one
side marked PRES, the other DEAN) to illustrate the
two hats he now wears.

In making the announcement. Dr. Elizabeth K.
Weisburger, president of the board of trustees said,
"Lebanon Valley College is fortunate to have a per-
son of Dr. McGill's stature and abilities to serve as
acting president. His service during this time of
transition will enable our ongoing search for a per-
manent president to proceed carefully and pru-
dently."

McGill has served as vice president and dean of
the faculty since August, 1986. He came to LVC
from the Division of Education Programs, National
Endowment for the Humanities, where he had su-
pervisory responsibilities for two programs: Exem-
plary Projects in Undergraduate and Graduate Edu-
cation and Humanities Programs for Nontraditional
Learners.

A twelve year veteran of the theater, he con-
tinues to take to the stage. Recently, he appeared in
two summer performances in the Mt. Gretna Play-
house.

EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

Restricted Gifts and Grants

Contributions which are earmarked for specific
programs or projects provide our "funds to grow by"
in contrast to the Annual Fund for Lebanon Valley
College which gives us "funds to live by." One meas-
ure of quality in higher education is the asset value
of an institution. Rightly or wrongly, we frequently
equate a quality learning experience with a college's
endowment together with the assessed value of the
physical plant. To ensure the future well-being of
Lebanon Valley College, we pursue restricted gifts
and grants with a vigor.

The 125th Anniversary Campaign for capital
support seeks restricted income in particular.
Donors are invited to assign gifts to the Edward H.
Arnold Sports Center, to "named" scholarships
such as the Presidential Leadership Awards, to pro-
fessorial chairs and lectureships, and to other en-
dowment funds in general.

However, at all times — whether or not in a capi-
tal campaign — Lebanon Valley College welcomes
contributions to specific programs or projects. Dur-
ing fiscal year 1986-87, the College benefitted from
restricted gifts totaling $572,024. Especially mean-
ingful levels of giving were realized by:

Kreiser-Snavely-Pfeiffer Scholarship, Amy
Suavely Kreiser Scholarship, Arthur L. Peterson
Leadership Scholarship, Dowland-Martin Memorial
Scholarship, Clark and Edna Carmean Scholarship,
Carmean String Ensemble Scholarship, Alumni
Scholarship Fund, Dorothy Yeakel Horn Scholar-
ship, Allan W. Mund, Jr. Scholarship, Athletic
Booster Club, computer science program, and
chemical research.

In addition to present gifts for restricted pro-
grams and projects, deferred gifts provide future
benefits for the College. Examples are bequests, life
income trusts and annuities, life insurance, and
gifts of real property. This type of planned gift pro-
vides for the donor, or a loved one, during his or her
lifetime and offers favorable tax consequences be-
cause of the charitable nature of the commitment.
Lebanon Valley College offers counsel and advice in
this area to those who seek it.

The minimum restricted gift to name an en-
dowment is $5,000 for a book fund. For $10,000, a
scholarship can be named: $25,000 provides a
named lecturership: and $750,000 will establish a
professorial chair. Other opportunities for remem-
bering or honoring alumni and friends are available
from the Office of Development.

We recognize the following persons who have
provided for the prosperous future of Lebanon
Valley College through a restricted gift or grant.
Those who made a contribution in 1986-87 which
qualifies at the minimum level for a separate en-
dowed fund are noted as members of the symbolic
Tower and TUrret Council.

TOWER AND TURRET COUNCIL

$5,000 and above

The tower and turrets of the College's Adminis-
tration Building rise above the campus, symboliz-
ing strength and vitality. The generosity of individ-
uals who make significant restricted gifts to
endowment and to selected programs and projects
is evidence of their dedication to the long-term goals
of the College.

Springer Lecture Series Established

The Fred J. Springer Lecture in International
Business was established in April to bring a speaker
to campus each year to address a specific aspect of
world commerce.

Springer, of Clarksburg, MD, provided funds for
this endowed series to enhance LVC's six-year-old
interdepartmental program in International Busi-
ness.

"1 thank Lebanon Valley College for the oppor-
tunity to establish such a forum," said Springer.
"This is significant because there are corporations
located throughout Central Pennsylvania who do a
substantial amount of business worldwide."

Dr. Claire Gaudiani of the University of Pennsyl-
vania's Joseph H. Lauder Institute delivered the
inaugural lecture, "Markets and Mandarins: The
Challenge of a New Competitive Environment."

Springer received his B.S. in accounting in
1963 from Villanova University. Before attending
Villanova, he served four years in the U. S. Air Force.
In 1973, Springer received an alumni medal from
Villanova for his achievements as an outstanding
alumnus. He has worked for IBM for 21 years as a
marketing support representative. His daughter,
Meg, is a 1987 LVC graduate in international busi-
ness and German.

The international business major is co-spon-
sored by the Departments of Management and For-
eign Languages. This rigorous interdisciplinary
program provides students with the opportunity to
integrate the study of business, foreign languages
and international relations. Graduates have gone
on to further study in international management or
employment by corporations with international
interests.

LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE

Computer Grant

The Whitaker Foundation, Camp Hill, recently
awarded a $225,000 grant to LVC to help provide
the College with a state-of-the-art computer system.

Bob Dillane, administrative computer coordina-
tor at LVC, explained, "Although our computer sys-
tem was good, it is being replaced by a computer
system which is outstanding. Because of this new
system, students at the college will be trained on
and will work with hardware and software which
will soon become a standard of the industry."

The grant enables LVC to purchase computer
equipment that Digital Equipment Corporation
introduced to the market in February 1986. The
equipment, DEC VAX-8200 for academic purposes
and PDF 11/84 CPU for administrative purposes,
will triple the college's computer memory capacity
for faculty and student use and double that for ad-
ministrative use.

In addition, LVC has recently increased the
number of microcomputers on campus to 65, five of
which will be used in administrative offices and the
balance in the academic area. During the previous
two years, 40 microcomputers were installed.

"The opportunity for future enhancement of
this system is phenomenal," said Dillane. "Because
of the updated technology this system offers, its use
can be expanded through hook-ups using compati-
ble software. We look forward to a significant
amount of off-campus student use with the dial-up
capabilities."

Freshmen are being introduced to the new sys-
tem in English classes where they are required to
submit at least one assignment prepared on and
printed by the computer.

Computers Donated

Rick Arnold, assistant professor of manage-
ment. Dr. Stephen Williams, professor of biology,
and Jeffrey A. Sprowles, senior vice president and
manager of the TVust Division, Commonwealth Na-
tional Bank, Harrisburg, admire the 16 Apple II
microcomputers the bank donated to the college.
The $28,000 system will be used by LVC's depart-
ments of management, biology, and chemistry.

EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY
CAMPAIGN

In addition to the significant number of TVust-
ees. alumni and friends who supported the College
through the Annual Fund in 1986-1987, a number
of individuals also played a leadership role in mak-
ing early commitments to The 125th Anniversary
Campaign. Donors to this special campaign, which
was formally authorized by the Board of TVustees in
May, and was formally launched in October, will be
recognized in a separate publication.

Arnold Honored

In April, Ed Arnold, president of New Penn

cently retired President Arthur L. Peterson: and
Ken Leedy, executive vice president of employee re-
lations at New Penn, who presented the check in
Ed's honor.

THE HONORS SOCIETY

The Honors Society was established in 1986-
87 to recognize those who have informed the Col-
lege of a planned bequest of $10,000 or above, or of
a life income contract naming the College as bene-
ficiary. If you have remembered Lebanon Valley
College in your estate plans, please advise us of your
intention, so that we may include you in our mem-
bership.

Charter membership in the Honors Society is
open for two years. While we will honor all current
members at a program this winter, charter designa-
tion will be offered to all who inform us by June 30,
1988 of a bequest of $10,000 or greater.

Dr. William R. Worley and Dr. Arthur L. Peterson discuss the Lutz
Scholarship establishedjor LVC students.

The Lutz Scholarship Fund has been estab-
lished at LVC as a result of a bequest from Parke
Henry Lutz and Cecil B. Ritchey Lutz.

The fund was created by the Lutzes to assist
students who reside in the Cocalico School District
and enroll at LVC. Dr. William R. Worley, superin-
tendent of Cocalico Union School District, com-
mented, "Because of the Lutzes' generosity, there
will be more Cocalico area students able to attend
Lebanon Valley College. We're very delighted with
this association."

The Lutzes also provided funds for Lutz Hall,
LVC's performing arts auditorium in Blair Music
Center and for furnishings in the Lutz Room of
Kreiderheim, LVC's presidential residence.

Cecil R. Lutz was an honorary trustee of Leba-
non Valley College at the time of her death in July
1986. Parke H. Lutz was a trustee of Lebanon Valley
College from 1969 until his death in 1975.

Students who wish to apply for the Lutz Schol-
arship may contact Raymond D. Miller, director of
guidance for the Cocalico School District, at (215)

EDUCATION FOR LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

A Man, Not a Hero

Let me sing of the sacred duty of favors.

Of doing them with no doubt in the heart.

Favors for family and neighbors first.

Who might be anyone, this world is so magic:

College kids short on money and sense

Like any other kids, like you were once.

Grown men, too, in love's fire, and women.

People whose dream must be pawned or choked on.

People whose real child is drowning.

I've saved five from water, and the one from robbers.

And many from themselves, as I have been saved.
