PREFACE

This book is the result of work done because of the writer's
desire to obtain a knowledge of his own ancestry, and that he
might be in a position to hand down facts on this subject to his
children.

The main family tree is found in Chart 1 and that tree for
recent generations only is complete in all its branches. Notes as
to the probably ancestr}' of William Wood of Earls ferry will
be found on pp. 51-57.

darts II to VI contain trees which are supplementary to the
Wood tree, and in some cases those charts are followed by lists
which further supplement the Wood tree by furnishing a com-
plete statement of the descendants of certain collateral ancestors.
These lists follow the charts to which they respectively refer,
and they contain in full the descendants to the end of 1909 of
the following individuals :

List I. John Kane (1759-1819) and his wife Maria

Codwise (b. 1775).
List II. Samuel Redmond (d. 1825) and his wife

Anne Ramage (d. 1848).
List III. Goold Hoyt (1769-1841) and his wife Sabina

Sheaff.
List IV. James Wilmer (1775-1831) and his wife

Ann Emerson.
List.. V. Jacques Benoit FeHx de Chazournes (1795-

1868) and his wife Marie Louise de

Brugiere (1804-1864).

In preparing the charts among the authorities consulted were
the "East Neuk of Fife" by Rev. Walter Wood, second edition
published in 1887; "Biographical Dictionar>- of Eminent Men
of Fife" by M. F. Conolly, published 1866; "Autobiography of
William Wood," printed for private circulation 1895; "Hoyt,
Haight and Hight Families" by David W. Hoyt, printed 1871 ;
"Historic Families of America" by Walter W. Spooner, printed
1907: "Old Kent; the Eastern Shore of Maryland" by George
A. Hanson, printed 1876; "American Genealogy" by Jerome B.
Holgate, published 1848; "Distinguished Families in x\m.erica
descended from Wilhelmus Beekman and Jan Thomasse Van
n)yke" by William B. Aitken, published 19 12, "Notice Gen-

8 THE WOOD FAMILY

ealogique sur les families du Fevre et Arcis de Chazournes en
Forez et Lyonnais" by A. Steyert, besides public documents in
the New York Public Library, the British Museum, in Edin-
burgh and many private documents and letters in the possession
of members of the family.

The lists of collateral descendants were prepared partly from.
the authorities above mentioned, but largely from data obtained
from various members of the family as the result of an active
correspondence involving the writing of many hundreds of
letters.

The great importance of accuracy in such work was constantly
kept in view, and every effort was made to avoid errors. It
may be, however, that mistakes will be found, due either to the
writer himself or to inaccuracies in the sources upon which he
was forced to depend, although wherever practicable he has
obtained a statement of the same facts from two or more sources.
No individuals appear, in either charts or lists, who were born
after the end of 1909, that being the end of the period covered.
For the purpose of identification of individuals of similar name,
and for other reasons, the years of birth have been given as far
as the writer has been able to obtain them, but a complete state-
ment of the dates of deaths has not been attempted, only those
dates of deaths being included which were obtained from sources
readily available.

In consulting the lists it will be observed that each individual
has a number in the column at the left of the name. This
number will be found again in brackets at the right of each of
his or her descendants, thus making it easy to follow any single
line direct from parent to child. Thus, for example, on page 1 1
in the First Generation will be found the name "2 Oliver Gren-
ville Kane." In the Second Generation appear the names ^"16
John Grenville Kane (2)" and "17 Pierre Came Kane (2)."
The individual numbers of John Grenville Kane and Pierre
Came Kane are 16 and 17, respectively, while the number (2)
to the right of each shows they are the children cf Oliver
Grenville Kane, his individual number being 2.

Gathered merely for the information of his children, it was
not the writer's intention to publish this material, but. he has
been asked by so many members of the family for copies ct the
facts obtained that he decided to seek the assistance of the
printer.

The fatnily tradition is that Anne

LIST I

DESCENDANTS OF
John Kane (1759-1819) and Maria Codwise

TO THE END OF 1909

/c

. : . NOTE

It will simplify reference to this List if it be understood that the num-
ber to the left of an individual's name is that individual's number in the
List, while the number to the right is the individual number of his parent.
By the use of these numbers it becomes easy to trace the direct line of
descent from parent to child, or of ascent from child to parent.

LIST II

DESCENDANTS OF
Samuel Redmond and Anne Ramage

(d. 1825) (d. 1848)

of Thornhill, County Antrim, Ireland

TO THE END OF 1909

APPENDIX

Notes on Ancestry of William Wood of Earlsferry.

There has never been any question in regard to the descent
of the family from William Wood of Earlsferry (1656-after
1720), but although the family tradition has always been that
William Wood of Earlsferry was himself descended from
Admiral Sir Andrew Wood of Largo (and in this connection the
Largo coat of arms has been in use by the family as far back as
we have any records) there has been some question as to which
one of certain of the descendants of the Admiral was the direct
ancestor of William Wood of Earlsferry. The writer has
accordingly examined such documents as he has been able to
obtain which bear on this point.

"In an 'Extract from unpublished account of the Woods of
Earlsferry and Elie' by the late Rev. Walter Wood, author of
the 'East Neuk of Fife/ there appear the following lines :

'The first of the family of whom I have any certain l-mowl-
edge, is William Wood, merchant in Earlsferry. The tradi-
tion in the family has always been that he was of the Woods
of Grange, who were themselves a branch of the Woods of
Largo. It rather favors this tradition that the property
which he possessed in Earlsferry' was bounded by property
belonging to the deceased Andrew Wood and of James
Wood of Grange. For probably the whole three properties
were originally one, belonging to Wood of Grange, and after-
wards parcelled out among his descendants.' "

The paragraph quoted above appears in a letter written in 1912
by Rev. J. Wood Brown, who wrote the preface to the second
edition of the "East Neuk of Fife," and who in that pre-
face states that the father of William Wood in Earlsferry was
Alexander Wood "in Carmurie." Rev. J. Wood Brown writes
in the letter quoted above that he was led to the conclusion that
the father of William Wood of Earlsferry was Alexander Wood
*'in Carmurie" by the discovery of an old brooch bearing the
inscription "A. W. born ye 17th March 1653." He continues as
follows :

"This brooch belonged to my uncle's sister, who told me
she had it from her mother, Mary Wood of Grangehill, and

52 THE WOOD FAMILY . ■ . ^

that it was an old family piece. I showed it to my uncle
(the author of 'East Xeuk of Fife') who copied the inscrip-
tion but never worked the matter out ; that was left for me
to do. It seemed to me, and seems still, that the connection
must be looked for through the A. W. of the brooch, whom
I assumed to be a woman, and therefore, as born in 1653
probably a sister of our William. With this new idea I
returned to the registers and found in that of Kilconquhar

an Agnes Wood baptised in June 1654. Her parents

were "Alexander Wood in Kilconquhar and Agnes Pearson
in Elie, who are thus described in the register of their mar-
riage which I found in the Kilconquhar Session Record
under date of 23 April 1650 (?i652). In the Elie Register
for 1656 the same couple, now described, however, as
resident 'in Carmurie' had a son baptised called William,
and in 1658 a daughter called Christen. Finally on loth
July 1661 they had'a son baptised John: 'Witnesses John
Pearson, AndVew and James Wood.' This last entry ap-
pears in the Kilconquhar Register. The discrepancy which
you will notice between the 'A. W. born ye 17th March
1653' (text of inscription on brooch) and the entry of

Agnes Wood baptised June 1654 (Kilconquhar Record)

is more apparent than real ; the former referring to birth
and the latter to baptism. If you will read again pp. 185-6
of 'East Neuk' you will see the disturbed condition of the
country at that time, and will understand that a child might
well have to wait many months in those days before it could
be safely carried to church. I have little doubt that Agnes
Wood is the A. W. of the brooch, and as she has, as she
should, a brother William, and as Andrew and James Wood
witness the baptism of her brother John, the probability that
this William is ours tends to become a certainty. For thus
appear again the names, if not the very persons, of that
Andrew and James Wood who held properties im.me-
diately adjoining the house and land afterwards occupied by
our William Wood in Earlsferry."

Assuming that the father of William Wood of Earlsferry
was Alexander Wood "in Carmurie," the question then arises
as to the parentage of Alexander Wood in Carmurie, and in this
connection the history of the Carmurie property becomes of
interest. An occasional reference to the chart facing page 58
will make the following remarks clearer.

In the middle of the i6th century the "barony" of Carmurie
was owned by the Dishingtons of Ardros. \Mlliam Dishington
before 1543 married Elizabeth Crichton, but he appears to have

APPENDIX S3

died within a few years, and his widow after 154S married
Alexander V\^ood of Grange, the second son of Admiral Sir
Andrew Wood of Largo. The Rev. J. Wood Brown writes: "I
find Elizabetli Crichton described as 'Lady Carmurie' in 1575."
She died in 15S1. ("East Xeuk of Fife," pp. 183, 215, 216.)

Alexander Wood of Grange sold the lands of Grange to his
nephew James Wood of Lambeletham (p. 184, "East Neuk of
Fife'*). It would appear that in some way the Carmurie prop-
erty also passed to this same James Wood from Elizabeth Crich-
ton, for in the printed "Retours" (Inquis. Special No. 1529)
under date 22nd October, 1596, Alexander Wod- of Lambelet-
ham appears as heir to James Wod of Lambeletham, his father,
in (amongst other lands) "Drummeis and Carmurie" in
Kilconquhar.

This Alexander Wood of Lambeletham (who in 1596 owned
Carmurie) had a son James Wood, who was his heir. William
Wood, an uncle of this James Wood, is spoken of as his "tutor,"
or, as we would say, guardian. William Wood had a son, David
Wood, his heir ("East Xeuk of Fife," pp. 1S4, 185).

Thus it would appear that the members of the family probably
connected with the Carmurie property in the early part of the
17th century were the two brothers Alexander and William Wood
and their respective sons James Wood and David Wood, and it
would appear probable that Alexander Wood "in Carmurie"
was descended from one of. these four men.* On this point the
Rev. J. Wood Brown writes as follows :

"Neither the Alexander Wood of the "Retours," whose
will is registered in 1606, nor William Wood, Tutor of
Lambeletham, who died in or before 1613, can have been
the father of Alexander Wood in Carmurie, who, as mar-
ried in 1650, must be supposed born about 1625. To imagine
him the son of James Wood of Grange (and Lambeletham)
who married Margaret Munro c. 1620 ('East Neuk of Fife,'
p. 185) does not contradict any obvious fact, and agrees

♦On page 484 of "Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Men of Fife"
it is stated that William Wood, the guardian, "appears to have had" three
sons, Andrew, David and James, and that Andrew and David settled in
Earlsferry, while James resided in Elie and was the father of William
Wood of Earlsferry. It seems probable, however, that this statement is
incorrect.

54 THE WOOD FAMILY

well with the neighborhood of WilHam (of Earlsferr>')
Alexander's son. and James Wood of Grange (probably the
later James the Rutemaster, 'East Neuk of Fife,' page 185)
in their Earlsferry properties."

This does not appear unreasonable, but on the other hand, it
is of course possible that the Camiurie property passed to William
"Wood, the guardian, and to his son David Wood, who may have
been the father of Alexander Wood "in Carmurie." The cir-
cumstantial evidence that William Wood of Earlsferry was the
son of Alexander Wood "in Carmurie" and was through him
descended from the Woods of Grange and Admiral Sir Andrew
Wood of Largo is strong, but the writer thinks it only proper
to point out that the question as to the exact line of descent is
not decided by any direct evidence in his possession, though such
evidence may be obtained in a more extended examination of the
very voluminous records of the Fife district than the writer has
found it possible to undertake.

The Family of Wood: Admiral Sir Andrew Wood of Largo.

"The name of Wood occurs at an early period in Scottish
annals. William de Bosco [Wood] was Cancellarius Regis, and is
mentioned from 1 170 to 1246. The Woods of Craig in Angus of
Bonnyton in the same county, and of Golpny in Aberdeen, were
all of them ancient families, probably springing from one com-
mon stock. The Woods of Largo, the only branch belonging to
the County of Fife, were founded by Admiral Sir Andrew Wood,
the first Laird of Largo." "This noted ocean warrior is gen-
erally stated to have been bom about the middle of the fifteenth
century at the old kirkton of Largo. The only evidence bearing
on this point, however, is a charter in his favor in 1490, giving
to him and his wife the cotelands and milne lands of Largo,
which formerly belonged to Helen Amot, daughter and heiress
of the deceased John Arnot of Largo, and the spouse of the
deceased William Wood, and which were resigned by her. Such
a charter might, of course, follow on a purchase of these lands
by Sir Andrew from Helen Wood, but it is also possible that
William Wood and Helen Wood (Arnot), were the father and

APPENDIX ' 55

mother of the Admiral. Sir Andrew may have been descended
from the Woods of Bonnyton in Angus, as Abercrombie says
he was. There appears, at any rate, to have been some acknowl-
edged affinity between the families, for as early as 151 1 there
is confirmation of a charter by Sir Andrew Wood of Largo, in
favour of Walter Wood of Bonnyton." Pp. 482 and 485,
"Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Men of Fife."

Of Admiral Sir Andrew Wood "The East Neuk of Fife"
contains many picturesque details (pp. 63-85) of which the fol-
lowing are a few. He "is famed in the history of his country
no less for his faithful adherence to his sovereign when aband-
oned by his nobles, than for his courage and naval skill." "His
genius for naval warfare had been cultivated by his frequent
encounters with French, English and Portugese pirates, in
defence of his ships and merchandise as a Leith merchant-trader."
"Prior to 1487 he appears to have entirely given up trading as
a merchant, and to have devoted himself to the service of the
King." He possessed and commanded two armed vessels of
about 300 tons each, called the "]Mayflower" and the "Yellow
Caravel," and it is these vessels which appear in his coat of
arms, the third and larger vessel being supposed to be the
vessel commanded by the English captain Stephan Bull, who in
July 1490 set sail from London with "three vessels, manned by
picked mariners, a body of crossbow and pikeman, with various
Knights who volunteered their serv'ices, intending to intercept
Sir Andrew on his return voyage from Holland, whither he had
been convoying a fleet of Scottish merchantmen." Bull cast
anchor east of the May, and one summer morning, directly after
dawn, two ships were descried coming under sail by St. Abbs
Head. These proved to be Wood's ships, and "the sun had
now risen, and shone full upon the English vessels, displaying
their magnitude to the eyes of the Scots. By skillful manage-
ment Wood got to windward of the foe, and immediately a close
and furious combat ensued, which lasted till night. The shores
of Fife were, during the whole day thronged with spectators,
who by their shouts and gesticulations expressed their alternate
hopes and fears. During the night the combatants lay by to
refresh and refit; at the dav/n the trumpets sounded again to
arms. ... At length the valour and seamanship of Wood pre-
vailed; the three English ships were captured and brought into

56 THE WOOD FAMILY

Dundee, while Bull was taken to Edinburgh, and presented to
the King ... As a mark of royal favour, Sir Andrew received
a charter under the Great Seal, of date 14th May, 1491, in which
license is given him to 'build a castle at Largo with iron gates,
on account of the great services done, and losses sustained by
the said Andrew, and for the services it was confidently hoped
he would yet render; and because the said Andrew had, at great
personal expense, built certain houses and a fortalice on the
lands at Largo, by the hands of Englishmen captured by him,
with the object of resisting and expelling pirates, who had often
invaded the Kingdom and attacked the lieges.' "

Of the above battle we read in the "Biographical Dictionary
of Eminent Men of Fife," "Then ensued that famous naval
combat of which historians give so full an account, and which
the minstrals of the day celebrated throughout Europe.

'The Scotsmen fought like lions bold,

And many English slew ;
The slaughter that they made that day.

The English folk shall rue.

■ • The battle fiercely it was fought

' Near the craig of Basse;

When next we fight the English loons,
May nae waur come to pass'."

The Admiral "is described by Mr. Tytler as 'a brave warrior
and skillful naval commander an able financialist, intimately
acquainted with the management of commercial transactions, and
a stalwart feudal baron, who, without abating anything of his
pride and his prerogative, refused not to adopt, in the manage-
ment of his estates, some of those improvements whose good
effects he had observed in his travels over various parts of the
continent.' " — "Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Men of
Fife," page 488.

Sir Andrew appears to have prospered, for in 151 1 there is a
charter by which King James confirms a sale of certain lands " 'to
an honourable man, Andrew Wood of Largo, and his spouse, on
account of a certain sum of money gratuitously and wholly dis-
charged for me, in mea magna exigentia et urgente necessitate.' "

APPENDIX 57

" 'From the time of the defeat of Stephen Bull, Sir Andrew held
a place very near the throne, and his wise counsels, especially in
commercial matters, were much listened to by the King.' "

In 1 5 13 Sir Andrew resigned his lands to the King and on
the 21 August of that year received a new charter " 'granting to
him and his wife the lands of Largo as before described, the
lands of Fawfields and Frostlees and Brewerslands, united into
a barony for ever' "... "Sir Andrew, now an aged man,
appears to have retired after this from public life, and to have
spent his remaining days in his castle of Largo. Sir Andrew
married Elizabeth Lundin before 1487, and he died in 1521. The
arms of Sir Andrew Wood of Largo are "azure, an oak-tree
growing out of a mount, in base, or, between two ships under sail
Arg. Crest — a ship under sail, ppr. Motto — "Tutus in Undis."
"East Neuk of Fife," pp. 63-85.
