THESE WALL

defined our present boundaries
during the temporary years.

stood for something more than stone.

Massive in the anxious mists

of spring; magic in autumn's crisp

and moon-colored midnights

when  cold  and  sky-etched  they  gleamed;

dreaming in winter of the long voice

and  never  silent  voices  of  the  years;

patient and stolid in summer sweat:

They endure the seasons' frequent warp.

to some were never more than walls.

But- where we walked hand in hand

or thought to thought or sometimes alone,

the length of our varied shadows on the stone

is never quite to be effaced

but fixed eternal in every seam.

In their acknowledgment of us,

our joys, retreats, our frustrate

tears, our occasional victories,

the walls cast a constant mold

of challenge in granite. Their mortar made

a map to trace our history.

changeless, faceless, changed our face.

For some of us read the map; some

of us saw the eaves buttress a south

sky; watched the granite turn pink

in afternoons; despaired of all

articulation, found our tears

and lusted at last to tear the blocks,

the skying symbols of thought down

one by one to find and devour

the secret in that secret face.

We lived with, loved with, learned with, and thrust

with these the fortressing, waiting walls.

stood for something more than stone.

defined our present boundaries
within the searching, finding years.

To MR. W. A. L COULBORN

Without such individuals the walls of Oglethorpe University v/ould represent but an
edifice. With such men the walls challenge us to seek out and use our potential strength.
