CAPE COD COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Hyannis, Massachusetts
Intro
The buildings which now house Cape Cod
Community College were built in 1 897 as the
State Normal School. Since then they have
been the home of several institutions of high-
er learning.
In 1960 these structures became Cape Cod
Community College. From its infancy this
new institution has been nourished by the
efforts of those who really believed in it. Its
present success and promising future prove
that those dedicated people were rewarded
in their faith.

A note about the name of our yearbook:
We derived the name Foreseer from the
abbreviation of Cape Cod Community College,
but to us it has a deeper meaning. We are
all foreseers, because we must look to the
future.

The class of 1964 is proud to dedicate this year-
book to E. Carlton Nickerson, whose unswerving
devotion and friendly cheerfulness have been an
inspiration to the entire college.
We would like to congratulate Mr. Nickerson on
his appointment to the office of president of the
college. He has truly been one of the pioneer figures
at Cape Cod Community College, and this brings
with him to his new office a knowledge and experi-
ence which will be invaluable as he helps shape its
future. We are confident that, under his leadership,
this future will be bright.

Changing of
On December 11, the college and the com-
munity honored Dr. Irving H. Barlett, who resigned
his position as president of the college to accept
a post as head of the history department at
Carnegie Tech. It was his leadership and guidance
that made Cape Cod Community College what
it is now. The Students of 4C's presented Dr.
Bartlett with an attache' case as a token of their
gratitude. The community, too, grateful for what
the college has done for its prestige, sent repre-
sentatives to proffer their thanks.

The Watch
Now we look ahead to the administration of
our new president, E. Carlton Nickerson, as he
takes his turn at the watch. In his hands we place
the future of our college, confident of even
greater success. Dean Nickerson was formally
installed as President Nickerson in a ceremony
held in the Barnstable High School auditorium on
March 8, 1964.

Carrying on the tradition of the four men who united to form a service club in
the spring of 1961, Phi Delta Psi has continued to promote "better understanding
between students," and "community service to all."
With this objective in mind, the present members set out this year to obtain the
goal set by their brothers.
Among the various projects carried out by the club were several successful
dances and community projects, including a lead drive for the Handicraft Work-
shop.
We, the members of Phi Delta Psi, wish to express our sincerest wishes for
success to the class of '64.

The eleven original members who organized
this group, which is primarily a service group to
the college and the community chose to call them-
selves the "Cappas." Dr. Elinor Hanna has acted
as faculty sponsor for the girls since a charter
was issued to the club in November, 1 961 .
In September, ten sophomore members held an initiation for freshman and sophomore girls wishing to
join the club. After the initiation the club started on its initial project, which was to help at the second Open
House that the college held early in October. At this function, the girls served as hostesses and guides to
the visitors. The club has worked at various school functions which included a dance on February 14 called
the Cupid Caper. In March, the Cappas began volunteer work at the Cape Cod Hospital. The Club's new
members put on a food sale, and over $40.00 was raised.
Officers for the club are Lydia Almedia, president; Sharon Gordon, vice president; Joan Richards, treasurer;
and Patricia Di Pietro, secretary.

The Mug Club was the first service club established at
Cape Cod Community College. In the 1963-1964 year
Ed Woolley served ably as President, while classmates
Barry Johnson, Vice President; Ron Caron, Treasurer; and
Ed Ormston, Secretary, served as equally efficient leaders.
This year the Mug Club sponsored an autumn dance
which was successful and most enjoyable. It was held in
the Commons with seasonal decorations.
As the sophomore year commenced, Mug Club held
an open house for the incoming freshmen who were
interested in joining this young men's organization. Hell
Week, or initiation week, was held in November for those
new students who chose to become members. A dance
ended all of the festivities for the week as the freshmen
were made official Mug Club Members.
This sophomore year was also spent in putting the ser-
vice club's goals into action. Its members concerned them-
selves with student aid and the development of interest in
college functions.

The Foreseer
The staff for the second issue of the FORESEER set bravely about its tasks
sometime in October, under the watchful eye of Mr. Warner. There is no need
here to recount the hard work and heartache which goes into putting together
a yearbook— the scrambling for ads, pictures, patrons; the agonizing rush to meet
deadlines; the struggle to balance the books and keep everybody happy. Let it
be sufficient to say that all concerned will be satisfield if you the readers are
pleased with their efforts.
Mr. Devoe explains
the mysteries of
layout to the group.

Under the patient and invaluable direction of Mr. Peter Hartley,
the Beacon staff this year carried on traditionally in that each
issue printed was the result of conscientious effort sparked by
unfailing interest in expressing the voice of the students. This year
the Beacon was honored at Greenfield when it was chosen the
most outstanding newspaper of the six community colleges. Cer-
tainly we are most proud of our staff members and their notable
achievement.

Newman Club
The Newman Movement is an National Catholic Group
with Chapters on most secular and non-Catholic Campuses
throughout the United States. It tries to instill greater
knowledge and appreciation of the Catholic religion in
college students by binding them together and making
them more active and conscientious Christians.
The Newman Club at C. C. C. C. meets monthly either
within the school building or at the Beachwood Inn. The
officers for the 1963-64 year consisted of John MacPher-
son, President; Angela Gomes, Vice President; Martha
Dreaddy, Treasurer; and Maureen Osborne, Secretary.

Student Senate
Our student government is made up of representatives
from the counseling groups. The senate's aims are to pro-
mote the general welfare of the college, to assist in form-
ing the policy for the student activities program, to serve
as a medium of communication between the student body
and the faculty, to provide a forum for student expres-
sion, to assist in providing orderly direction of college
activities, and to work with the community.
The senate is also involved in duties of a lighter nature.
In September, during registration, the senate sponsored a
dance at which the freshmen could get acquainted.

Each semester we are privileged to be honored students who have obtained
excellence in their grades. The requirements for the Dean's List are to obtain at
least an average of 3.0, an equivalent of five subjects. The students who are able
to meet these requirements do so by perseverance and study, but find it well
worth the time and toil. The Dean's List is truly a position of honor, for
to be a college student is one thing, but to excel academically is a greater
achievement.
Early in the second semester this year, Cape Cod Community College gained a
voice. Three students, under the advisorship of Mr. Clark, arranged for and pro-
duced a half-hour radio show called "Community College Close-Up." Each week
Sally Jensen, Ed Wilhelms, and Dan Flynn discussed topics of interest to the col-
lege and the community.
Cape Cod Community College seeks among
other things to develop the body as well as the
mind.
Year after year our sports program increases,
with more participants and more variety. The Col-
lege provides equal opportunity for both male
and female students.
Four C's excells in basketball, and has proven
over and over again, that despite the limited size
of our college we are not limited in ability.

Our boys have had a successful season, and
our girls, despite the lack of participants, have
been able to secure a winning average.
Our program consists of touch football, intra-
mural basketball, wrestling, bowling, ping-pong,
badminton, baseball, weight-lifting, softball and
swimming.
We look to the future in which more facilities
will be available, so that we might broaden our
sports horizon.

©FABIAN BACHRACH
November 22 was a fateful day, a day of grief and sorrow at the news that
our beloved president had been assassinated. The nation mourns its great loss, but
the Cape feels the distress more deeply than anyone. The Cape was Kennedy's
home. It was here that he fled from the stress of his position to enjoy the relaxa-
tion and beauty of life. It was here that he shed his official cloak and became the
warm, sincere person that he was.
We, the students grieve even more, because he so often emphasized the
necessity of proper education. He did everything in his power to boost the
educational opportunities.
His ideals and values will stand as an example for all time.

Cape Cod Community College reflects the influence of the sea which surrounds
it on nearly all sides. From the student commons one looks out on the panorama
of Lewis Bay. The brisk sea breezes and early morning fog are constant reminder
of the water nearby. And opposite the main entrance is one of the most effective
reminder, this beautiful painting of the Red Jacket in full sail.
