PRESIDENT

DR. JOHN J. O'NEILL

To each member of the Class of 1969 1
would like to offer my most sincere congrat-
ulations on your achieving your baccalaure-
ate degree and every good wish for your fu-
ture personal and professional success.

The years that you have spent here at the
College can be characterized on the national
scene as an era of extremism in a climate of
confrontation. Our nation has been going
through a period of agonizing self-appraisal.
Neither the end nor the results of that ap-
praisal are yet in sight. I can say to you now,
without the risk of being indicted for expound-
ing presidential platitudes, that the world you
face is a world of challenges . . . challenges
that you cannot avoid. You have no options.
It will be difficult for you to assess imme-
diately the values of your educational expe-
rience over the last few years at Boston State
College. Your training here may be adequate
for your immediate utilitarian needs but the
true measure of what you received from the
College will be those attitudes that remain
when you have forgotten the details of what
you learned here.
I hope that the most significant experience you have had in college has been an aware-
ness of the fact that there are few easy answers to the complex problems that each one of
us must face as individuals and as citizens of a democratic society. But, if it is true that
rarely are there simplistic solutions, it is equally true and important to remember that
there are often a wide variety of meaningful alternatives.

The meaningful yield of your years at Boston State College will be what remains
overtime from the abrasiveness of daily living. If this has been a successful period in your
lives, the results will be difficult to quantify but none the less real. What will be involved
will be such intangible variables as character, compassion, commitment and aspirations—
perhaps the capacity for introspection, a sense of the essentially tragic nature of life, its
ephemeral quality and the ability to feel deeply, balanced by a sense of the comic spirit.

Now for the future. I envisage the development of our enrollment to approximately
10,000 students over a relatively brief period of time. There will be a greater diversity of
specialized programs at the College to meet the needs of an urban society. At the same
time we will continue the development of strong liberal arts programs.

To meet its responsibilities for the future, the College must have vastly increased
physical resources for its academic programs. You are only too well aware of how inade-
quate our present facilities are.

If Boston State College is to achieve its objectives, it must have your continued interest
and support. Consequently, I would like to take this opportunity to urge you not only to
join the Alumni Association but also to take an active and articulate part in the Associa-
tion's program for the support of the College.

John J. O'Neill

JUNIOR
WEE

Judith Subatis
Junior Queen

Junior Week, that pleasant period before final examinations,
was traditional in the most positive sense of the word. Those of
us who were still surviving students attended all or at least most
of the 1968 events.

Leading off was the Prom, a chance for the jeans-clad juniors to
become unrecognizable in formal attire. The King Philip Inn in
Wrentham was the setting for dancing to such diverse rhythms as
the waltz, the fox trot and something known as the "Funky Four
Corners."

Symphony Hall was next on our agenda where we mingled with
the Pops crowd being serenaded by the dramatic, white-maned
Arthur Fiedler. The Program included "Song of the Volga Boat-
men", "Greensleeves", and Jim Webb's "Up, Up and Away",
in a pleasantly varied sequence.

For the sports fans among us (and there were many), Fenway
Park was offering a game between the Sox and the Oakland
Athletics, the visitors trouncing us 4-2.

A costume party has tremendous appeal, especially for us who
are exhibitionists who turned up at the Fargo Building disguised
as such Roaring Twenties' types as Zelda Fitzgerald, Al Capone
and Little Ceasar. In an impromptu performance, Dean John J.
Kelly, Jr. serenaded us and did so very well, we might add.

The last event was the always-crowded Class Banquet, this year
held at Valle's Steakhouse in Braintree. Class awards were pre-
sented to the deserving juniors and the event culminated Junior
Week as an unquestionable success.

GOVERNMENT
ASSOCIATIOi

The Student Government Association is an involve-
ment group. It is dependent upon the dedication,
leadership and cooperation of an elected group of
individuals to serve as a protectorate over the better
interests of the students of the college. It serves as a
governing body over areas of student concern such as,
curriculum, faculty evaluation and the 31 subsidiary
organizations it sponsors. Together with the faculty
advisors the Student Government operates as the
sponsor of all student activities both academic and
social.

OUR CREED

There is a destiny

that makes us brothers:

None goes his way alone:
All that we send

into the lives of others

Comes back into our own.

FROM THE EDITOR .

Compiling the largest yearbook Boston State has ever had was a monumen-
tal task. Receiving the position as EDITOR of LAMPAS 1969 late in Octo-
ber did not make this task any easier. However, I have been very fortunate in
having a staff with both the ability to compile this yearbook and the stamina
to survive the long, late hours of hard work. I especially wish to thank:

JOHN HOWLAND, my right-hand man, for keeping the books straight and
for spending long, long, and longer hours to provide the experience needed
by this new editor in planning and editing this yearbook. Thank you for all
the work in every possible area related to this book— and for acting as my
CO-EDITOR.

PAUL BROUILLARD, for providing lots of photos and for promising to
help as much as he could and never going back on his promise.

SHELLEY MILDEN, for finding and correcting our mistakes.

DANNY KIMBOROWICZ, for a job well done in a field in which he was
unfamiliar.

KEVIN COYLE, for providing the extra funds necessary for financing this
book.

JOE DONOVAN, my greatest thanks for all your patience in dealing with a
female editor.

DR. WILLIAM KENNEY, for having the faith in the staff and myself in
producing LAMPAS 1969.

To the remaining people who helped both formal staff members and other
class  members  many  thanks.

To everyone who helped when we needed help and never gave up even
when things got rough, my deepest appreciation and gratitude.

To all the staff, I hope that you have enjoyed working on this book as
much as I have. Thank you for your time, patience, and cooperation.

AVIS LEABMAN
