Alexander Baron, Sydenham, London. January 30, 2010
This is from Ray Keene's chess column in the London Times, February 6, 1999, page 39. The game was actually played on January 1, 1999; the famous Hastings Congress is played after Christmas and over New Year. Although violently unsound, the Albin Counter-Gambit is a dangerous line for the unprepared player. In her scorebook, Jessie gives the opening as Queen's Gambit Declined, which indicates that she was not just unprepared but unknowing. Although Cleary was graded slightly below her, she did well to win this game in unfamiliar territory against an obviously wily opponent.
