Original manuscript notes and additions to the zoological works of Thomas Pennant (British Zoology, 1776) with water-coloured drawings of birds, possibly with intent to publish a later, revised edition (none such published). Pages of original text are interleaved with leaves containing extensive manuscript annotations written in a clear, sloped hand
Includes 20 watercolours of birds attributed to Tunstall by Casey Wood
First 50 pages of volume 1 contain historical information on the production and provenance of the manuscript, as well as a biography of Tunstall himself, taken from George Fox's "Synopsis of the Newcastle Museum."
Bookplate of Edward Constable of Burton Constable on flyleaf of volume 1; inherited by Edward Constable of Burton Constable after Tunstall's death, as part of the inheritance of Wycliffe and the Constable estate; volume 1 also contains extensive excerpts from books describing the family history of Burton Constable, including mansucript excerpts and folded tables tipped in; manuscript continued to reside in the library at Wycliffe until the sale of the library in 1899
Sold as part of the sale of the Tixall Library by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, as lot 519, on November 7, 1899
Acquired by Casey Wood in London, May 31, 1922; annotated throughout in hand and typsecript, including inventories of illustrations laid in, by Casey Wood
Set bound in later brown goatskin with marbled paper over boards; five raised bands with title in gilt and ruled border in the compartments; marbled endpapers; edges untrimmed
