A step in the right direction for Disney and Iwerks!
This was the second Mickey Mouse cartoon ever created. It was made in the awkward period before Steamboat Willie, but after Plane Crazy, where he still had several personality traits left over from the previous Oswald shorts. He isn't exactly Oswald like he was in Plane Crazy (he's a well meaning hero.) But not quite Mickey yet, either. (Drinks, Smokes, gets animals drunk, etc.) But regardless, the animation is quick, fun, smooth and lively. Some of the best for its time. Except they were iffy on whether he had shoes or not, so they'll often disappear and reappear from frame to frame. Just about every gag has perfect timing and has made me laugh (Although the humor here is definitely raunchier then what you'd normally expect from a Mickey Mouse cartoon). Despite being less defined, the characters are still likeable, and you are actually rooting for Mickey this time, unlike in Plane Crazy. Overall a pretty good, funny cartoon, just a little rough around the corners.
