This movie is just more proof that Cary Grant was the winner in the lotto of life. How he was predisposed to acting is unknown to me, but he certainly was a diamond for the public who enjoys a natural actor. His acting is flawless and he becomes the part he plays.

Just wanted to add a little info for those that might find it useful. Although you can see the original "The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss" title on the page, this is not that version. That title was used for the original, uncut UK version (which has a runtime of 80 minutes). The US import runs 61 minutes, and was first titled "The Amazing Adventure," and later "Romance and Riches."

I think Cary Grant is the greatest. The quality of the 512kb mp4 is such that it lends a charming antique feel to the movie itself. I viewed it on my 4.3in HTC EVO so your mileage may vary on a larger screen. As I state in the subject line however, at 63 minutes long and with such a true professional as Mr. Grant in the lead this is an easy and entertaining movie to ease your best friend or significant other into the wonderful world of pre-WWII Hollywood movies (notwithstanding the almost exclusively English cast and locale, as Mr. Grant was an Ellis island alumnus and already by this time a top Hollywood actor).
4 stars because even here on archive.org there are better movies featuring Mr. Grant. This really is one of the best sites today on the WWW.

This is one of those movies that are impossible to dislike. Carey Grant returned to king and country to make this seriocomic Depression romance that is sort of like "Brewster's Millions" in reverse, but with more serious overtones. Grant is fine, as always, and so is his all-British supporting cast. There are some nice romantic touches, and while there is little in the way of the broad comedy Grant would become famous for, there are quiet laughs. There is one boisterous exception in a knockdown brawl that comes close to being slapstick. All in all, a sweet time-passer with a warm and fuzzy conclusion. FOOTNOTE: "Brewster's Millions" 1921, 1935, 1945 and 1985, are all remakes of the original "Brewster's Millions," a 1914 silent. Did I hear somebody say there's nothing new under the sun? OOOPS: The cast members aren't all Brits. Mary Brian (Frances Clayton) was a American actor who appeared in films like "Charlie Chan in Paris" and "The Man on the Flying Trapeze." Sorry about that. I blame it on not enough coffee.

Well, they are just about gone now - the great ones. The film was a little dark but still enjoyable.

Made in the UK,this is a very minor offering from an actor who,at the time, was on the verge of super stardom.
Pleasant enough, this "feel good" movie was probably just what the doctor ordered (pardon the pun on the plot) for the audiences of the day

Cary Grant has always been my favorite male actor. I love every movie he has made, no matter how bad the script. No other actor even comes close to this man.

As others have written, this is a solid, enjoyable romantic comedy. Clearly meant as a feel-good fairy tale for those poor souls suffering through the Great Depression.
I would like to correct the description given by the Internet Archive about this film; Cary Grant does not make a wager with a therapist. The bet is made with a doctor he sees while feeling ill, who gives him some good advice and indirectly challenges what the doctor sees as an example of the idle rich.
I downloaded the 256kb mpeg4 file. Good picture, though some dark scenes are too dark, with good sound. There are a number of places in the film where frames are missing, which is a shame.

This would be a pleasant diversion of a movie even if Cary Grant weren't in it, because the story is engaging and moves along at a brisk pace. But it is such a treat to watch Cary Grant embody the title role. All the charms and subtleties, the vulnurability and cold anger, the humor and physicality that he brought to so many great roles in so many great films are all here in this little 61 minute gem.

A slightly predictable, yet very entertaining story. Given that this was made in 1936 I thought that the London setting was interesting. Young Cary Grant had already found his style and I always fall for it. I wonder if he ever really deviated from it, I'll have to find his first movie. He always made his character seem like someone I'd really like to know.
