Subject: Great Show With Some Epic Jams
Subject: Great Show With Some Epic Jams
4/13/03
The audio quality of this show is pretty good, though there are times when Barber is WAY too loud in the mix. Odds are good that's just how the live mix was, and this isn't a problem with the recording at all. Just a heads up.
Ladies - Cool thematic jamming and great phrasing from Barber. Really enjoyed this, specifically after the 8:33 mark when they break it down and re-build. Perfect execution of this.
Home Again > 7-11 > Poob > 42 - The Home Again jam starts with no direction at all, and Magner almost saved it with his arpeggiated synth. Unfortunately it's pretty directionless right up until they start hitting the chords for 7-11. The jam out of 7-11 is straight up nasty trance. The first jam in Boop is pretty generic as far as this type of jam is concerned. They sound like your average jam band, and that's not a good thing. The jam out of Boop has a weird, almost circusy feel to it, but they start transitioning into 42 WAY too early, and for almost 2 minutes it is essentially a (boring) 42 intro jam. 42 is not jammed on, making it feel like it takes 3 hours because it has 500 verses that all sound exactly the same and only vary in the lyrics.
Confrontation > Munchkin Invasion (end) - The jam here starts out with some potential, and great communication between Barber and Magner. This jam can't seem to decide if it's going to be really beautiful or not, and I think it finally decides that yes, it will be very beautiful. Around the eight minute mark (8:23) Sammy drops into a really cool drum beat, and Barber and Magner are really feeding off of each other. This jam gets so gorgeous, and the segue into the Munchkin ending is PERFECT. If anybody ever asks you what you mean when you say that the Biscuits segue seamlessly, point them to this segment. Wow!
TVM > Digital > Shelby (><) > Buddha - The 1st Moon jam is interesting. Not in the sense that they're covering new ground, but it's basically a jam on TVM's chorus, but with trip-hop(ish) drums. It's a weird feeling, but it works. The drop into Buddha comes where the Very Funk would normally start. The jam out of Buddha starts out pretty strange, and grows stranger and stranger. Things start getting pretty chaotic (think TVM 3/24/01, if you're familiar), and Barber is CRAZY throughout this portion of the segment as they barrel into the Shelby peak in a minecart that's completely on fire and missing a wheel. This is definitely one of my new go-to portions of Biscuits music, and I highly recommend if you listen to nothing else from this show, listen to the Digital > Shelby. Unfortunately, Shelby > Buddha is not nearly as interesting, and actually feels like it drags for a little bit.
TVM > Munchkin > Confrontation - Before listening to the show, I thought there had to be a mistake, because I saw no segue between the end of Buddha and the Very Funk. It was not a mistake. They start up the Very Funk out of nowhere. The jam is a very spacey sounding house jam, and Barber is playing some interesting riffs here. I wish this jam was longer, because I feel like it could have gone some really cool places. However, the Munchkin jam more than makes up for it. This is super blissful, happy Biscuits at its finest. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
The banter after the first encore break is very strange. It sounds like the band is speaking in French, perhaps? No clue what any of them say.
Humu > Sound 1 - The Humu sounds exactly like a Humu jam should. Bouncy, island feel to it. Very pleasing to the ears. Sound 1 is a standalone.
Finally, Resurrection > Home Again is another very good happy/uplifting jam. I don't know why, but 2003 seems to be the era of the happy jam. I love this sound, and this band, so much.
