Subject: Close To 5 Stars, But Not Quite Enough
Sound - Average/Above-Average (At least these shows are all consistent on that fact).
Spaga starts out with a sick breakbeat jam. Not really groundbreaking, but Sammy is just killing everything in his path in this first jam. Magner is playing some great lines later in the jam. 2nd jam does nothing for me.
Kamaole > AC2B has potential for a little bit but overall is very generic. AC2B 1st jam doesn't do a whole lot for me either. Brownstein stays on the "exit" riff for quite a while, and I can't stand when he gets stuck on one of those. There's also a little too much Barber wankery in this section for me. 2nd jam is better by about the third measure. They've got that pretty-minimal-ambient-house thing going, and I love that. Magner's messing around with a gated-arpeggiator, and all of what they're doing so sounds gorgeous together. After a while, they start getting more and more joyous, and this turns into a classic 2003 triumphant peak.
Resurrection is fun, but nothing beyond that. I like the jam in Jigsaw. Fun jam, and Sammy is crazy at moments.
Plan B - This actually has a pretty decent type 1 jam, with lots of soaring Barber lines.
Basis > Confrontation (><) > Kamaole Sands - This Basis intro is nice and long. Unfortunately, it doesn't really seem to go anywhere. As far as Basis intros go, I'd say that this one is pretty generic, and sounds like a LOT of other Basises (Basi?) The intro is around 13 minutes or so, and nothing really interests me until the riff Barber hits at 10:23. By about minute 12 they've got their direction, but by then I had been too bored to care that they did a great job for the last minute and a half. No middle jam here, which is not really the norm for April 2003. In fact, of the 5 Basi in April '03, this is the only one without a middle jam. The ending jam starts out great, with Magner taking a really cool lead. They do a great job of building up a jam that has that start/stop feel without the drums starting and stopping, which has a neat effect. The jam starts to get nice and pretty at about 24:00, with Magner playing some great pad-leads. Near the end of the jam (~30:00), they get locked into a tight little groove, with Brownie/Barber leading the way. The jam into Confrontation is a classic Confrontation peak jam. Barber soaring above everybody, all four of the band members playing off each other and building very well. Confro jam starts out very low-key, with some melodic Barber. Very cool spacey sounding jam, very ethereal. This jam is fantastic, and the lead-in back to Kamaole is damn near perfect, especially from Barber. This is the type of "out of nowhere" drop that I love. They hit the transition flawlessly and Barber afterwards is possessed.
Ladies > Basis - Again, another jam that's fun but not really that interesting. Really cool dance groove, but not much beyond that. That being said, this is a jam that will make you want to get out of your computer chair and start dancing.
This show was a tough call, because it had a lot of really fun jams, but most of those jams are fairly superficial. The only things you really need from this show are the 2nd AC2B jam, and > Confrontation > Kamaole.

IMO 23:20 - 27:10 of Basis could be some of the sickest symbiotic jamming I've ever heard. All four of them are just ebbing and flowing off each other in the most beautiful way...long story short this Basis is pretty much a living breathing creature. So... Basis-->Confro-->Kamaole = Sick. The AC2B is definitely sick too...I like the more subtle versions myself but to see this one live would have undoubtedly been sweet. A+ recording here too...pick this one up

Possibly the best Spaga and AC2B ever. What a start to this show. They should have ended the first set after AC2B - we were spent and this would have been perfect place to hang the energy. People would have exploded waiting for the 2nd set.

The whole show is great, but if for no other reason, get this for the Basis>Confrontation. Quite tasty...sound quality is very good too.
