Subject: Some Very Good Stuff Here
Subject: Some Very Good Stuff Here
Sound: good enough to my ear. Music:
Little Lai - Pretty well played, and the jam gets into a nice little groove accented by Sammy's starting and stopping at certain points. The band is locked into this peaceful little groove that screams "I'm walking down a path in the middle of the woods when the wind is blowing through the trees in summer." Or maybe I'm the only one that gets that. Oh well. In any event, I really like this jam. Very, very pleasant, and low-key. The peak turns out to be incredible. I'm really impressed with this version of Lai.
Astronaut - The jam here is great. Barber is playing a riff that is just catchy as hell, and they get locked into a really tight groove. Nothing outside the pocket really, but a good little house jam.
World is Spinning - JESUS BARBER. His voice not only sounds like he just smoked a full pack of cigarettes immediately prior to singing WiS, but he forgets half the words in the second verse. Not a great version of this song.
Story - The jam in this song goes nowhere the entire time. I don't know what it is about Story of the World, but sometimes they just have no clue how to jam on this song without sounding stale. This is a waste of 10 minutes of your life.
Spacebird - Spacebird suffers from the same problems that Story does, and this version is pretty boring too. The jam has some potential because it's very very chilled out and laid back, but it never goes anywhere at all from there and winds up getting incredibly monotonous.
Jam > Svenghali - The jam into Svenghali can barely be called that, since it's like 90 seconds long. Not really good or bad. The Sven jam itself starts out pretty meh-tastic, but around 6:30 or so Magner comes in with a cool lead patch that really works with the jam. Magner also uses his flute patch and the angel choir at various points in this jam. Thanks to Magner and Sammy, this jam turns out to be really really good. Around 12:30 they drop the beat half-time for a few bars, and what results afterwards is a glorious, beautiful Svenghali build. Blissco, for sure.
Triumph > Bazaar - The first few minutes of the Triumph jam don't really do anything for me. Around 7 minutes is where things pick up a little bit and they get into a nice little happy-go-lucky groove. They get into a really really blissful jam here, and then it kinda drops out into nothing and they just start up an intro jam for Bazaar. Strange segue, but this jam is phenomenal so I don't really care. Bazaar is as it usually is.
Mr. Don > Triumph - There's a two minute or so intro jam into Don that is short, but quite good. The type I Mr. Don jam (1st) is pretty good, with Magner going off a little bit. The 2nd jam is very psychedelic. It has different feelings throughout from dark to very happy. By the segue to Triumph it is very very dark and really kinda creepy. It actually sounds like it could head towards an inverted Waves, but it winds up in Triumph land.
Magellan - Magellan is well-played, and there's a nice low-key, chilled out jam in it as well. Pretty good version, with Magner playing a flowing water sample at the end of the song.
Nughuffer - The story here is all about how Brownstein became a vegetarian and then unbecame a vegetarian on this particular tour. The jam itself is just dark and filthy trance, and very very good. Magner leads for quite a while, and it sounds great.
If I could give this a 4.5, I would. The Nughuffer, Don, Triumph, Sven, Lai, and Astro are all great versions. Unfortunately Story and Spacebird are boring as hell and WiS is as well.

Dont overlook this one.....above average sound quality and a little slow out the gate but the Story and Spacebird get it goin to close out the first. The second just rips with a great Sven opener and it doesnt let up till the encores are done! Not a must have but a good addition to a collection.
