Subject: Missed opportunities
Subject: Missed opportunities
Sound is pretty good overall.
Jam > Munchkin > Ladies > 42 - The jam begins pretty good, with that middle eastern feel of the beginning of Bazaar Escape. Pretty minimal play overall with some cool phrasing from Barber. I really enjoyed this jam at the start, but after a while it begins to drag quite a bit and you feel like you're just waiting for them to go somewhere. It gets pretty stale after a bit. The jam in Munchkin starts with some prettiness, and it has a very airy feel to it. They've got a happy vibe the entire jam, but it never goes anywhere at all. The segue into Ladies is decent. The jam out of Ladies is pretty meandering as well, with a few cool things here and there. However, overall, as a jam, it's nothing special. They actually get locked into a great groove right before the switch to 42, but at that point, you've been waiting for something cool for almost 10 minutes. 42 is another meandering jams. This definitely has a couple cool moments here and there, and some great guitar work from Barber at times. However, once again it's just a little too disjointed for my tastes. Near the end they get into some cool psychedelia, but it is, unfortunately, short-lived.
Buddha > Bazaar > Buddha - What a great looking segment. Seriously. The Buddha jam starts with some really cool psychedelic jamming. Great communication from Barber and Magner. This jam is really cool, though at times, it too is meandering. Overall though, I really like it. As it nears Bazaar Escape it maintains a lot of the psychedelic feel but with some pretty, light guitar work from Barber. The melt into Bazaar is flat out awesome. I really love the jam out of Bazaar Escape. It sounds like the type of classical style Biscuits that a jam out of Bazaar Escape should be. It winds up turning into a really neat, more electronic jam with some really cool stuff from Magner.
Rock Candy > Munchkin - The jam out of Rock Candy has Barber playing this really cool riff that I like a lot. He builds on it very well, and at about 7:44 there's a breakdown that leads into some really cool stuff for a short while. This jam gets a little too meandering once again, and though they touch upon some cool themes here and there (specifically about 3 minutes from the end where they get into the major key), there's just too much meh for me to keep interest the whole jam. There's nothing really all that interesting until they're clearly headed for Munchkin.
Wet - Standard.
ItHotMK - Standard, but I love this cover.
Waves > Sound 1 > Waves - The jam out of Waves starts out really cool and has this really weird feel as they chug along in a slowed down house groove. Really trippy stuff for the first few minutes. They pick up a really cool happy groove as they get closer to Sound 1, but the segue into Sound 1 is pretty botched. The jam out of Sound 1 is a trance jam from the beginning with a very strange feel to it. There's a mean darkness to it, but Barber reigns everybody back in with some fairly straightforward guitar playing near the segue back into Waves. Overall the jam is decent, but not really memorable. It actually winds up turning into a pretty good Waves peak, showing that sometimes mediocre jams can turn into good peaks.
There are a lot of missed opportunities from this show. A lot of the jams will start out great or have a few minutes of awesomeness in them, but for the most part are stale and/or directionless. I'm not sure why this show has always gotten so much praise. Buddha > Bazaar > Buddha, Waves > Sound 1 are really the only portions of this show I'm interested in hearing again, and with all the throwaway jams, this show is lucky to be getting 3 stars.
