Subject: Below Average Sound, High Quality Playing
Sound is below average.
Shelby > Jigsaw - The jam out of Shelby is great from the beginning, and seems to last forever. There are a few different themes played, and each of them are very good. The portion that begins around 11:00 is absolutely gorgeous. Very ethereal playing. It sounds like music that would be heard on a stage outdoors on a windy day. Beautiful stuff. The build is fantastic, but the drop into Jigsaw comes absolutely out of nowhere, in a not-so-great way. Oh well, after that jam, I'll forgive them.
Spraypaint - Standard.
7-11 > Ape Aquatic > Dublights - The jam out of 7-11 is very, very good. Barber plays some really creative riffs throughout, and this is another long, involved jam. Really, really good. The jam out of Ape is a dub jam with Magner on flute patch and it is also awesome. Magner, Brownstein, and Barber are all playing really well here interacting with one another. Turns into a Dublights, which is certainly more welcome (IMO) than Floodlights. The jam in Dublights gets into an absolutely sick groove with Barber playing a really catchy lick the whole jam.
Wet - Standard.
Astronaut > KOTW > Shelby - The jam out of Astronauts is spacial sounding, and features a lot of pretty minor key melodies. Magner is doing a lot of the leading in this jam, and I really like the feel of this jam throughout. The jam in KOTW is really good as well, and it has this great galloping sound throughout, with Barber playing a lot of really neat licks. The Shelby peak is fantastic.
Tunnel - The Tunnel jam is a light, happy little ditty, but it gets a little boring for me. It's pretty, for sure, but it just doesn't really go anywhere. Not a bad jam, just not really something that stands out.
Dribble > Astronaut - Lots of Brownstein slap in the first Dribble jam, which I'm not a huge fan of. Magner starts a really, really cool line at 5:27, and messes with it a little bit, but unfortunately I lost interest pretty quickly. The jam builds to a really great peak before ending, but the jam itself isn't all that impressive. The 2nd jam is a trance throwdown from the getgo and is awesome. Builds up nicely to the Astronaut ending.
Munchkin - The jam features Magner on square wave, and though short, it's not a bad jam. I don't think this is mindblowing or anything, but it's a better encore than a jamless Highwire or something else. They don't really have time to build properly and get a couple minutes of jam in before beginning the build for the end of Munchkin.
All in all, this show has great song selection, an interesting setlist, and most important great jams. About the only non highlights in this show are Tunnel and Dribble (1st), and Munchkin. All the rest is very creative, thoughtful jamming. Shelby, 7-11 > Ape > Dublights, Astronaut > KOTW > Shelby, Dribble (2nd) are all highlights. Not even the below average sound prevents me from giving it 5 stars.
