Subject: Skip 1st set, except Munchkin.
Subject: Skip 1st set, except Munchkin.
Sound here is good.
MEMPHIS > Munchkin - The show starts well with a solid MEMPHIS 1st jam. It's very similar to lots of other MEMPHIS 1st jams, but has a great Barberrockgod peak before the drop. Nothing incredible, but solid. The 2nd jam here starts out with a really nice progression from Brownstein and some catchy hooks from Barber. As they get closer to Munchkin, things intensify, but this jam suffers from the same problem the 1st MEMPHIS jam does. It's solid, but not all that memorable. The jam in Munchkin is absolutely beautiful. Blissco.
Mitts - Standard
Kamaole > Pygmy > Kamaole - The segue into Pygmy from Kamaole is just the Kamaole exit riff repeated over and over again until Pygmy starts underneath it. This type of segue was kinda cool the first few times that they did it, but if you've heard other August '03 shows, you know they've done it better and it's old by this point. The jam out of Pygmy is decent enough, but not really anything special.
Plan B > TVM > AC2B - The jam in Plan B is a galloping little jig, and it's one of those rhythmic jams where nobody seems to be playing any leads, but it just works. Really cool jam. Sammy is great here. There's no jam out of Plan B, and they just drop right into TVM. 1st TVM jam barely lasts a few minutes and is nothing much to speak of. 2nd jam gets stuck in the Very Funk for-what-seems-like-ever. They seriously play the Very Funk for almost 4 minutes. Too much, TDB. Once they get out, they wind up in a bluesy sounding jam with Magner on panflutepatch. I really like the feel of this jam, but I don't really find it all that interesting. Another solid-but-not-great jam. 1st AC2B jam is a real let-down. They vamp the AC2B 1st jam exit riff over and over again pretty much until they arbitrarily build and get back to the composition. Disappointing. 2nd AC2B jam starts great like most 2003 AC2B 2nd jams, but at about 16:40 they get on a different track that I'm not a big fan of. Luckily, it actually leads to a really cool trance jam with Barber playing a really really catchy riff. Decent peak.
Helix > House Dog > Helix - As usual they've got the 02/03 progression that just kills momentum. However, the jam that follows the composed jam is awesome from the get-go. Barber is playing a great riff and Sammy is messing with the tempo of the jam in a really cool way. Magner accents Barber's riff perfectly. You can hear Sammy at points throw in triplets. Things take a step back and the jam becomes spacial and ethereal. At 10:09 the beat drops out entirely. Throughout this segue they feel a little lost but it actually works out very well and I really like it a lot. It seems like a lot of their best playing has always come from trying to figure stuff out on stage rather than, oh I don't know, practicing. The ultimate drop into House Dog is botched, by Barber. Surprise! The House Dog jam is foreboding from the beginning with some really great phrasing from Barber. Magner is playing some haunting stuff here, but Brownstein is the one who really sets the tone of evil here. Barber actually sounds a little out of place with his bluesy licks for a while, but eventually he too gets in on the evil action. Great disco jam from House Dog back into Helix, which turns out to be a fantastic peak.
Wet - Standard
You can pretty much skip the 1st set, other than the Munchkin jam. 2nd set is significantly better but still not enough to get more than 3 stars for the whole show. A lot of filler but the jams that are good are quite good. Munchkin, Plan B, AC2B (2nd), and Helix > House Dog > Helix all work very well.

this is an awesome show, definetely worth the download. the m.e.m.p.h.i.s. starts the show with a bang, the first jam is just awesome and the show just keeps getting better. my only question is about the tracking of ac2b. it seems to be tracked 3 minutes before they actually start ac2b, and in that 3 minutes i don't hear anything that sounds like an ac2b, it does have a hdpf feel, but not ac2b. other than that it is a must download.
