The hand-drawn illustrations were created by John Richard, from images of fish observed or collected by the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. Illustrations are highly detailed and include views from various vantage points. They include species name, notes, and sometimes location. For some that are located in oversize storage, a photocopy is included. Locations noted include Sydney (Australia), Columbia River (Washington), Oregon, and Rio de Janeiro
