Subject: This is an abbreviated version of the fiction
The classic novel is very lengthy about 2,000 pages. This current translation is an abbreviation but the complete story is told. The original 120 chapters are re-organized into 50. It is good to save readers a lot of time.

Subject: Translation of a translation
Please note that this is not a direct translation of the Chinese original but a translation of Franz Kuhn's German translation (1932) of the original. In his introduction Kuhn states that he did not translate all of it (50 out of the 80 chapters, but there are editions with 120 chapters).
The copy given here is missing the title and copyright pages. The translators were Florence and Isabel McHugh and the book was published in 1958 by Pantheon, New York.
The most complete and fairly recent English translation is found in the Penguin Classics series (5 vols, paperback). La Collection Pleiade (Gallimard) has a French translation in 2 volumes.
