While a columnist for The Chicago Record humorist George Ade penned numerous “fables” which were subsequently collected into books. Fables in Slang is the first of these collections. It contains 26 satirical stories that lampoon phrenologists, idealists, snobs, fanatics and other ignorant fools of the day, most of which still wander through our modern lives. Jean Shepherd considered Ade a predecessor who made writers like James Thurber, Mike Royko, and himself possible. Fables in Slang was first published in 1899 by Herbert S. Stone and Company. I really like George Ade. If he was good enough for Jean Shepherd he's good enough for me. And yep the reader is real good and he has a basso profundo voice and I too had to turn down the bass to keep the walls from shaking. I hope he reads some more George Ade books!

That's a nice compliment to the narrator, Lanternland. Regrettably, Gregg passed away in 2012. :(

The stories are okay, if a bit weird. I am really not sure if I liked this book or not. Gregg does a nice job with the reading, but I did find the recordings a bit base heavy so I toned it down a bit.
