"Ostensibly based on the author's personal observations and collections in southern Africa, the book is a monument of deception. An infinity of detail is given of the habits of the various species and of the circumstances under which the specimens described or figured were secured by the author in Africa, but many of these species do not inhabit any part of that continent. ... Errors of previous authors have been perpetuated, with an added element of personality given by Levaillant who cites exact data for his supposed specimens." --J.T. Zimmer, Ayer Lib. cat., p. 391
