LibriVox recording of Miss Frances Baird, Detective by Reginald Wright Kauffman.
Read by J. M. Smallheer
Frances Baird is a detective with the Watkins Agency of New York City. She and a colleague are sent undercover to "The Maples" to guard a valuable set of diamonds during the festivities leading up to the marriage of Mr. Deneen's eldest son, James Jr. Within a few hours of their arrival, however, this seemingly simple task turns into something much more sinister, and it is ultimately left to Frances to unravel the truth of the matter. (Summary by J. M. Smallheer)

Subject: A wonderfully read story
Subject: A wonderfully read story
The narrator has just the right intonation to capture the epoch of the arrival of the female detective onto the scene of an America that was growing in leaps and bounds, and progressing like a locomotive into a modern century. This is a thoroughly enjoyable story, with a captivating old-fashioned air. My only disappointment is that there appears to be no further adventures of Miss Frances Baird, (female) Detective.

Okay, the story does and doesn't end happy, but it is still a good story.
A set of gems is stolen, and shortly after, the soon to be married son of the house is murdered. Two detectives are on the case, but soon it is evident to Miss Baird that she and her partner are heading in opposite directions as to who the guilty party is. She decides to strike out on her own to determine who the killer is.
Excellent reader and recordings. Thank you!
