Once again many thanks to Charlie Miller, archive.org, the Grateful Dead, etc…
This show was one of the first tapes of the Dead I got back in the day and somehow it had been many, many years since I’ve listened to it. To now hear such a high quality recording is friggin awesome. This show is raw, primal beauty. That Clementine, oh my. Jerry’s wailing gives me goose bumps. The whole show is a scorcher. I might have a soft spot for it but if this is “below average” then I’ve never loved a D+ so much

It's may be a little raw and dirty, but this might be one of the best takes on Viola Lee Blues of all time. It's a scorcher, and Garcia plays some insane licks.

Subject: A show in a small ballroom
From what has been circulating previously, it's apparent that the full-length Schoolgirl is not dated correctly. The Other One is the last before the lyrics changed. Road Trips vol 2 #2 added the Dark Star from this date. So Many Roads has the above average Clementine, which is the highlight. Otherwise, what we have - and can verify* - is below-average to above-average '68.
2½ stars
*Viola Lee Blues
*Cryptical >The Other One > Cryptical
*Clementine
*Good Morning Schoolgirl/CUT

Chopped olive sandwiches, roses and wine
Cold ripe persimmons, my sweet Clementine
There's a chill in the meadow, of bottomless time
I go on, I go on, I cannot fill my cup
There's a hole in the bottom, the spring has dried up
I run through the forests of linear time
Chop through the branches and cut through the vines
I'll be back in a moment, though it may take me years
In the lava rock canyons corroded with fears
Of corruptible bodies and grief beyond tears
I'll go on till I hear the sweet voices behind
That I've left for the comfort of cold Clementine

It is that clear, crisp and invigorating. This is simply a stunning tape that needs to find a space on your rack next to the Carousel and Tahoe shows. Wonderful recording, mix and performance!

Subject: Great Performance
Just playing 'this day in Dead history' and came across this old gem from '68.Compact, spitfire of an Other One Suite (would have like to hear more jamming on the OO section but I guess they would expand the song more in later renditions). Clementine is fantastic and makes me wish they would have given this song more attention. One review stated that it reminds him of Allman Bro's but to my ear, it sounds more like the Dead contemporaries/SF compadres, Quicksilver Messenger Service (listen to Gold & Silver on their self-titled debut). A shame that the Schoolgirl was cut off.
Once again, thanks to Charlie Miller for making this available.

...is found here, a performance that is about as jazzy as this band can get in 1968. of course the Viola is a monster too! As Cliff says this WHOLE show is a jazzy masterpiece, and the next night is about as good imho.

#############__Smokin' Hot_1968 GRATEFUL DEAD Show.
5 Stars for the mix
5 Stars for the recording
5 Stars for the performance
5 Stars for the "most excellent" Charlie Miller Transfer.
I highly recommend adding this show to your 1968 GRATEFUL DEAD Collection. If you haven't done so already, click on Charlie Miller's name and collect all his GRATEFUL DEAD shows, he has impeccable taste.
"Clementine" is a very special treat. It's sung by Garcia, and reminds me of some Allman Brother's 6/8 Grooves they'd jam out on.
Good Morning Little School Girl cuts off at 2:13.
Remember to also click on the "Deadlists Project" and collect the posters and ticket stubs that sometimes appear for each show.
Eat, Drink, Be Merry and Listen to the GRATEFUL DEAD.
Thanks for the Love.

A welcome and long overdue upgrade on what is certainly among the top five shows of 1968!
From the opening chords of Viola's, the band comes out guns blazing and they are taking no prisoners.
This amazing Coltranesque suite is proof that Jan/Feb '68 is as brilliant as any period in the band's history. (100 pts)
